Not sure if you are still responding to comments for this episode, but hopefully at least you see this. I gotta say, F1 World Grand Prix was simply the best F1 simulator ever. If it wasn't the difficulty that hooked you, it would be the staggering differences between using the best and worst team's vehicles. Even on the easiest difficulty setting you would really have to grind to pull out a race victory, let alone even a top 10 with a team like Arrows. The F1 video games over the past 4-5 years have been absolute rubbish in terms of difficulty. You could win any race with any team as long as it's not the hardest difficulty. It destroys any sense of immersion when you can win a race just as easily with Ferrari or Red Bull as you could with teams like Marussia or Caterham. I actually have the instruction booklet for F1 World Grand Prix, and it actually goes into detail, giving attributes for team vehicle performance (Front and Rear Downforce, Engine Power, Engine Reliability, even Pit Crew capacity.) For AI drivers, the game aimed to emulate how skilled the drivers were (Ability to control the car at high speeds, Cornering skill, Aggressiveness, and ability to drive in rainy conditions) I could go on and on forever about what makes this game the best F1 game ever. And the amazing part about it is, there's no "Career Mode" to be found anywhere. The Challenge Mode was excellent and I wish more racing simulations and sports games in general featured something like that. Last but not least, the 97 events mode is something i have never seen mimicked in ANY other game ever. To add to your review, the results of the AI drivers would be exactly how they were in real life with the exception of whichever driver you decided to play as. Think of it as the "impossible difficulty level" that could only be overcome with very specific vehicle settings for each track and an incredible player at the controls.
I just bought this for $6 and after 15 minutes I’m giddy as a kid on Christmas. This is already one of my favorite games ever and I can’t even get past 15th place on the easiest difficulty. I can already tell I’m going to love mastering this masterpiece and it the satisfaction when I do will be massive.
This game was a part of my childhood. The best thing was the two-player mode with damage enabled and playing Destruction Derby with one of my family members! Who retired had lost! I enjoyed the Grand Prix very much, too.
This was my favorite game back in the day. I started watching F1 in 1994 and the first full championship I followed, was the 1997 season. And I was a fanatic viewer, having subs on two magazines, keeping statistics, etc etc. I remembered almost everything from that season. The Challenge Mode was the absolute best feature in this game, most days I would reset one of the saves and try to complete all the challenges. Fisichella losing that tyre was the hardest one. Me and my brother also made our own little game; 'the black flag game'. The idea was simple, you play splitscreen Monaco, and whoever get's the first black flag wins. The Tyrrell's were the best cars for this, they would break down the fastest, Minardi would work, but they were too slow. The trick was to weaken your car by bouncing in the walls, but still be fast enough to get to the chicane after the tunnel first (as you would lose 2 wheels if you hit the kerbstones if your suspension was broken = black flag). If your car was too wrecked to still be somewhat fast, you wouldn't be able to lose 2 wheels on those kerbs, it was a silly game of balance. And if you would hit the corner at casino at the perfect angle, you would also lose 2 wheels, but that was more difficult than a 1080 in 1080 Snowboarding. And if you failed, you wouldn't be able to destroy your suspension before the end of the tunnel chicane. It was the best. So yeah, guess I wanted to share. I also never figured out what the engineer said when your suspension got wrecked, "Your suspension lost steering"?
I played this recently and it blew me away. It's so detailed and realistic with all the options on. The practice sessions before the big race are so essential for learning the track, tweaking the car set-up and getting an idea about what the weather will do. It's so rewarding when all your hard work pays off on race day and you manage to get good points. Really impressive game.
I never thought of this game as a sim because it had controls like double-tap A to accelerate faster, double-tap B to stop insanely fast and tilt the control stick down and the direction you want to go in order to turn further. I do remember having fun trying to see how many cars I could take out of the race before they finished though! The trick was to slowly approach them from behind until you're touching them, then go full throttle and watch bits and pieces fly off both of your cars! It was especially effective if you were the Gold or Silver driver.
I just found a copy of this in a box in my basement today while looking for some other stuff. It's mint/complete, etc. My Brother was a big fan of Formula One on the Playstation and I think that's why I picked this up when I saw it. I bought it brand new on discount, opened it, played it maybe once and forgot about it until finding it today - 20 years after I purchased it lol. I looked it up to see this review of it and am very pleased to see that it's very highly regarded. I'm looking forward to playing it, but I have a backlog of old games to get to, so I'm not sure when I'll get around to it. Great review dude! youve got a new subscriber from Mexico, I just got this game from jjgames and it seems fun but difficult to master though. Keep up the good work!!
Loved this game, bought it new and played it for absolutely ages ,only thing that bugged me when playing is you don`t hear the other cars getting up beside you and no mirrors to see them, but it`s still the best F1 game out there
I find F1 as dull as ditchwater but I loved this game. I spent whole evenings over a few weeks back in 1998, winning every race on ‘Champion’ difficulty on the full number of laps. It’s also the only N64 game I ever had crash on me, 3 or 4 times when doing the full distance Grand Prix. Quite frustrating when you’re an hour or so into a race!!! Great review from Glenn as ever.
@@n64glennplant It sure was, I was 18 at the time and had just left school, so had plenty of time to waste! Tempted to get the N64 back out and give it another go now 😂
Nice review Glenn! I had this game back in the day, i love F1, but i found this so hard to play i exchanged the game quickly, it was sad because i loved the game so much! but i wasnt expecting a simulator and that drew me back. Nowadays i bought it again real cheap and sadly it was the german edition and i cant understand a thing, when i find a copy in english i'll give it the amount of time it requires. Cheers from Spain!
4:20 that’s because of all the consoles of the generation, the N64 was tight with polygons. Could render more of them than any other console that existed at the time. The N64’s shortcomings are based in textures. That’s why N64 games had better models, and PlayStation games had better textures
My brother and I used to play this all the time, I love the sounds F1 vehicles make. I remember the game would penalize you for cutting around corners, trying to shave a few seconds off your time. As a result, my older brother appreciated it more than I did, but looking back it really is a technical marvel that they managed to fit so much on the cart. As for my fav. Driver, has to be Gilles Villeneuve (biased as I'm Canadian lol), a great racer who's time came way too early.
yeah it was ahead of its time like the 97 season mode was insane for the time and the crashes etc occurring at the exact same time blows my mind even to this day
Even nowadays you don't see that kind of dedication to realism in games. I wish they'd have more games like that, like in wrestling games, or other sports titles.
I was a big Jordan fan, back in the day, for the very un-PC reason that I smoked Benson & Hedges. They used to have cards in the pack, that you could save up and get Jordan/B&H branded gear. I haven't smoked for over a decade, but I still get an almost pavlovian urge when I see those yellow Jordan F1 cars 🤣
I love the game. I have logged many hours with this game( that is until my younger cousin destroyed the cart by submerging it into the coffee maker's pot)then I bought the sequel. Nice review as always
I remember the first time I finished in the top six - then the cutoff for a points scoring position, for non-F1 fans. I was so happy, I felt like Alonso did today. (Well, maybe not *that* happy, but I *was* pleased 🤣)
N64 Glenn Plant yes. I'm Canadian, so I still cheer for Williams, but my mom is italian so i cheer for ferrari too. I felt bad for the McHonda this year, so I was happy for them when they managed to get points. I hated McLaren during the 90's, but there's something about them being so bad that makes me sad for some reason.
This was my first video game ever! Played it so much the first few days I got nightmares from the adrenaline rush! Course I didn't really know how to play it properly, I'd turn off damage and flags than just shortcut through the gravel. I guess I technically had a couple point and click Putt-Putt games, but those were more interactive movies than games.
Great review! I totally agree with you. When I was young this was my favorite racing game. I played it for soooo many hours! For me the game had the right balance between simulation and fun and i think that all racing games should give the player the option. I only felt the same fun in a F1 with the F1 games from codemasters which I've been enjoyed very much.
My brother and I used to drive as fast as we could into walls and break the cars. I was so young, I used to think kph was faster because I didn't know what it was and didn't know how to even tune the cars. I loved driving to the pits with a wheel missing and the engine damaged.
I remember, renting this back in 1998 at least 3 times from Blockbuster. I loved this game. To me it is the 2nd best racing game on the N64. I remember the tracks being somewhat longer than the average racer. Also, liked how the damage impacted your racer. To me, San Fransisco Rush is the greatest racing game on N64. Top Gear Rally was also good too.
I've had top gear rally recorded for ages but haven't got around to writing the review for it yet...really need to get on with that but i have a huge backlog of episodes to work out at the mo!
I got this game recently based upon seeing your review like almost a year ago, love this game, expecially in the authenticity, however I have such a hard time placing in this game...im not one to like losing but i like playing this game in first person....i just got to get better at it, looks pretty real...quite good for n64
Phenomenal game! So underrated and highly addictive! I was playing this a few hours ago and its still striking how difficult it is to perfect the breaking. Many happy hours spent trying to win the World Championship in a Stewart! Haha
very good review, i would like to point out that the hungarian track on this game is inaccurate, the fault is in the beginning of the lap, the first couple of turns is of the 1986 layout
Sarah Connor Formula 1. The very first game on PS1 was a fucking classic. Id say it runs better and faster. Doesnt look as pretty. I did get hooked on this game too though. Beat a record on monaco and unlocked senna's mclaren mp4/4 as a ghost car that randomly showed up.
I always enjoyed this game when I had my N64. The graphics were great for the time and system, especially with the use of the expansion pack. I would say my favorite driver was David Coulthard. He may have had some disappointing moments and seasons, but I enjoyed him at his best and his sense of humor.
I play this game still all the time. It is simply amazing. Only problems that I have are that, even in champion mode, I can do ridiculous lap times, such as 1 min 15's in Australia, some 14 seconds faster than the real life pole position time. Also, if you are right behind a car going into some corners, then they will sometimes spin off. Under yellow flags, the other cars do a certain speed limit, say around 180kph, even at corners such as rascasse. The other cars also have much faster pit times than you, and there is nothing to be done about it. No matter of your lap times, the other cars near you will be around just as fast as you. So if you are 1st doing 1 min 25's, then the next few cars behind you will do the same. If at the same course you were doing 1 min 25's but were in 18th, then the cars say from 15th to last will also do similar speeds, whilst those out in front will be faster. Also, if there is a yellow flag on the first lap, then the cars will go at varying speeds. What I mean by this is that the car in front will be the fastest car on the track, then the second car, and so on, but there will be massive differences in their speeds, so the car in first place will catch up to the last car in only 3 or 4 laps. This changes again depending on your own position, as if you are first doing normal lap times than you will catch the last car on only a few laps, and if you are last doing the same speed, then the other cars will do ridiculous speeds. You can also go just as fast in a Minardi as you can with a Williams. However, these do not affect the game too much, and it is a really great game to have.
***** To be honest, I only got the game back in the end of 2007. This was the reason why I got interested in F1 in the first place, because I thought it was a different game when I bought it. In the end, I played it for a few days, and have loved F1 ever since. But to answer your question, I haven't ever found the sequel, only seen a couple of videos of it.
My dad loved this game back in the day I remember getting upset because he was always hogging the Nintendo 64 leaving me stuck playing the nes which I loved but when you had a brand new n64 it was tough to go back i even remember the brakes turning red hot
I absolutely loved this game, i played the 1st and 2nd Grand Prix but, sadly i sold my whole N64 game collections at a yard sell as a kid for 20 bucks. Keep in mind i gave this man a huge bag filled with games upon games........... biggest regret of my entire life. Now ive bought 2 N64 consoles and trying to re collect my childhood games from here on out :D
You are making me want to get this game. I know absolutely NOTHING about F1 and would probably leave you very annoyed by how literally I mean that. However, I enjoy forza and GT, simcade style racers and like you, racing is my favorite genre. It looks very dodgy and jerky in its controls to me, but if you say that is how they really are, I'll take it from you. I look forward to trying it. Thank you for your review.
i'm a great F1 fan! my favorite team is Mc Laren, I got the game 'bout 1999, for my N64, and just love it, it's felt so real that I couldn't believe it! I enjoyed every single deteal and every single game mode, even I used to check my fastest laps telemetry! I still keep on playing on the N64! Such great game.!! I named the william's driver as Juan P. Montoya! jajja becouse of the arrive of the colombian to the team!!!
Williams is my favourite of course... Sir Frank is from the same town as me :) Driver I would have to say Mansell or Schumacher (especially in the 90s).
One that always sticks in my mind is the start of 96 season I think it was, refuelling had been reintroduced and Alesi was told like ten times to pit but he kept going and going and ran out of fuel on the track lol... the 90's ruled, best decade to grow up in by a mile
I was one of those disappointed Canadians !! Haha. I absolutely loved this game. It got me really into F1 and I'm still a huge fan. Toughest challenge had to be when (I think) Damon Hill had a gearbox problem and you had to defend his lead, it was damn near impossible.
I remabering playing season mode, challenge mode and time trial..this game was well design to carefully to the T for a n64 console you would think you playing a f1 simulator, I played f1 since the Nigel nelson game ever since.
The best game F1 World Grand Prix (97) of that decade and still a great game. I played so many time in my house. When I played the F1 2000 and 2001 for play station 1 the difference one to another was no that big, a mean if you compare the time and the process to made a good game. That because the lines of the tracks wasn't good to see may be its because the speed. When you play a game of car race you have to see farther to prevent the next corner. Could be the graphis and the options for mechanics change a good game F1 2000 and 2001 but when you try to prepare the car for each track or another gran prix its so difficult especially in a warm up (so many options to put). The F1 World Grand Prix have simple options to prepare the car an any different problems in the field and a great display to see what happens in the car when you drive and in the pits. Simple its my favorite game "F1 World Grand Prix - Nintendo 64" and I can talk I´m a fan of f1
It's weird...a lot of people say the N64's graphics didn't hold up at all...I'm in the distinct minority in that I absolutely love the N64's graphics. All those sweet sweet polygons and early 3D models remind me of some of the best years of my life as a gamer. The N64 is exactly what the Atari Jaguar was supposed to be...I know nostalgia plays a huge role in my love for the console, but I still genuinely enjoy it. Yeah, it's too bad they lost a lot of 3rd party support, but there are still dozens of fantastic games worth playing. Anyone who is a racing fan should check out the N64's library in that genre...It is, in my estimation, the best console for racing games...retro or else-wise.
Hi I have a problem I'm playing this on Project64 but tyres wears out after very few laps, I'm not able to make a race do you know if it's a rom or emulator issue?
I remember the first time I saw this game about 2 years ago in one of those 50 games in 10 minutes type videos. I was blown away by the graphics for an N64 game. I saw the game for $.50 and picked it up. When I sat down to play it I was so incredibly turned off by the severe lack of sense of speed. The car never felt that it was going as fast as the speedo said. Actually it seemed like the car reached it's max speed at like 50MPH and made it nearly impossible to judge turns. I actually made money on the game when I traded it for a buck at a different store lol.
ah man that sucks, with all racing games if you play with the cockpit view the frame rate it much higher giving that sense of speed but i know a lot of people don't like to play racers that way :(
The visuals look great for an early N64 title going for realism!
Mid life cycle game

@@n64glennplant It sure was, I was 18 at the time and had just left school, so had plenty of time to waste! Tempted to get the N64 back out and give it another go now 😂
Loved it. The settings of the car were superb.
Great game! As for my favorite F1 driver, I'd have to say Alain Prost, in a McLaren Honda. But I'm also partial to Ford Cosworth engines
I wish they'd have more games like that, like in wrestling games, or other sports titles.
yeah although they did try to do those wrestle mania moments things in matches but it always felt forced i felt
I loved the graphics back in the day and even today the graphics are still very nice considering the hardware...
Just bought this game :) and great review Glenn.
My favourite is Jordan
I was a big Jordan fan, back in the day, for the very un-PC reason that I smoked Benson & Hedges. They used to have cards in the pack, that you could save up and get Jordan/B&H branded gear.
I haven't smoked for over a decade, but I still get an almost pavlovian urge when I see those yellow Jordan F1 cars 🤣
I love the game. I have logged many hours with this game( that is until my younger cousin destroyed the cart by submerging it into the coffee maker's pot)then I bought the sequel. Nice review as always
what a random but funny story!
Yeah I know, well now it is funny, it wasn't though when it happened
i can imagine !
My childhood, brings back so many memories
I remember the first time I finished in the top six - then the cutoff for a points scoring position, for non-F1 fans. I was so happy, I felt like Alonso did today. (Well, maybe not *that* happy, but I *was* pleased 🤣)
This game was beautiful! Really good gameplay and atmosphere. I remember renaming Driver Williams to activate cheats lol
I bought a 64 just so I can buy and play this game again. I bought it brand new also. Lucky to have found it that way. Me and dad played it all day!
I just bought this game at a swap shop for 6 $. This was when I was absolutely in love with the f1.
Are you not still a fan these days?
N64 Glenn Plant yes. I'm Canadian, so I still cheer for Williams, but my mom is italian so i cheer for ferrari too. I felt bad for the McHonda this year, so I was happy for them when they managed to get points. I hated McLaren during the 90's, but there's something about them being so bad that makes me sad for some reason.
Everyone loves an underdog right? 😂
N64 Glenn Plant you are certainly correct
Brilliant review, thanks, I can't wait to get this one ..
check out the sequel also
This was my first video game ever! Played it so much the first few days I got nightmares from the adrenaline rush! Course I didn't really know how to play it properly, I'd turn off damage and flags than just shortcut through the gravel.
I guess I technically had a couple point and click Putt-Putt games, but those were more interactive movies than games.
I've never played this or seen it even but damn now I want to
There was a sequel too worth checking out also
Great review!
Getting this game tmrw off of Ebay, thanks for the review!
+emberr_ check out f1wgp2 review for a comparison
sure ill definatley take a look at your review and probably pick it up on ebay/amazon.
My brother and I used to drive as fast as we could into walls and break the cars. I was so young, I used to think kph was faster because I didn't know what it was and didn't know how to even tune the cars. I loved driving to the pits with a wheel missing and the engine damaged.
I got interest in that game because it was based on the season Jacques Villeneuse became the first and only Canadian to become world champion
Play as the Gold & Silver Racer & wreck your cars. 😉
BlackJohnnyCage leave it in 2nd gear and hit 600km/h
counterfit5 😂😂😂 "The suspension is broken" waves black flag.
Leave it in 1st and hit 1000km/h!
José Manuel I wonder if that is a glitch or intentional...
Or maybe it used to be a glitch but they decided to leave it in as an actual feature because they thought it was funny :D
I loved this on the ps1 I used to play it tons with my brother inlaw and it was brilliant and still looks awesome
i thought so too, ill try to get around to reviewing the sequel too which had expansion pack support
***** i have diablo 3 my name thing is glennplant although i haven't played it since the month it came out
=D could join in the game today for a few hours be awesome how fast you will level
This game is really cheap and it's actually really good, I especially like the different camera modes. The graphics were impressive too.
glad you agreed
Dont ever change theme song. Thats why i subbed.
Phenomenal game! So underrated and highly addictive! I was playing this a few hours ago and its still striking how difficult it is to perfect the breaking. Many happy hours spent trying to win the World Championship in a Stewart! Haha
WrathOfANorseMan066 haha its a great f1 game if you like f1 racers! only the sequel bettered this i think
***** Yes I've watched the reviews it actually looks awesome! I need to get my hands on a copy!
I'm Mclaren til I die, and naturally Mika Hakkinen is my favourite ever driver.
I See You're a Man of Culture As Well
Funny, this was my first N64, and is still one of my favorite racers. Excellent graphics and fun gameplay, if a little hard to learn at first.
very good review, i would like to point out that the hungarian track on this game is inaccurate, the fault is in the beginning of the lap, the first couple of turns is of the 1986 layout
The first corner didn't change up until the early 2000's, after this game was released.
You should review F1 Pole Position. My brother used to love that damn game. It came out a year or two before this game.
That’s right it did, that was the first one on the N64 and it’s the only f1 game I’ve yet to review
This is so nostalgic for me; it was the very first game I got with my N64 :D
ha i saw this after seeing your post on the RW comments page :)
until this day there is no better F1 game out and for a 1998 game that's a huge disappointment.
+Sarah Connor lol
Sarah Connor Formula 1. The very first game on PS1 was a fucking classic. Id say it runs better and faster. Doesnt look as pretty. I did get hooked on this game too though. Beat a record on monaco and unlocked senna's mclaren mp4/4 as a ghost car that randomly showed up.
Sarah Connor the sequel on dreamcast was better imo.
What about F1 Championship edition?
FJM8940 that one was quite bad
I always enjoyed this game when I had my N64. The graphics were great for the time and system, especially with the use of the expansion pack. I would say my favorite driver was David Coulthard. He may have had some disappointing moments and seasons, but I enjoyed him at his best and his sense of humor.
I had this game was definitely ahead of its time
I love the soundtrack. So high energy and cool
Aidan Willowhite you must have also loved the sequel too then :)
This game looks great! Want to put it on my list, but will have to be patient to pick it up as the shop where I usually get my games doesn't have it..
ah try online as its a very common game so usually very cheap to get
Pretty good game played back when I was a kid. I usually ran off the tracks most the time, lol
this game is bloody everywhere I go to while game hunting, I would consider this game to be the most common N64 game in Europe.
What made it even better was playing it using the steering wheel attachment.
Thanks Shaun - hope you end up enjoying it!
i'm a great F1 fan! my favorite team is Mc Laren, I got the game 'bout 1999, for my N64, and just love it, it's felt so real that I couldn't believe it!
Sir Frank is from the same town as me :) Driver I would have to say Mansell or Schumacher (especially in the 90s).
ha thats awesome! i miss the wildness of racers from back in the day, its kinda like football now they are all too professional
One that always sticks in my mind is the start of 96 season I think it was, refuelling had been reintroduced and Alesi was told like ten times to pit but he kept going and going and ran out of fuel on the track lol... the 90's ruled, best decade to grow up in by a mile
amen to that! it sucked when schumacher would win every season by a country mile though, kinda killed it for fans really i think
Barry's World It was '97 Australian GP
This was a brilliant game still is
I prefer the sequel, both great tho
I was one of those disappointed Canadians !! Haha. I absolutely loved this game. It got me really into F1 and I'm still a huge fan. Toughest challenge had to be when (I think) Damon Hill had a gearbox problem and you had to defend his lead, it was damn near impossible.
i think i remember that one...the other drivers would fly past you with ease!
I remabering playing season mode, challenge mode and time trial..this game was well design to carefully to the T for a n64 console you would think you playing a f1 simulator, I played f1 since the Nigel nelson game ever since.
Nigel mansell on the SNES? Man I played that too
The best game F1 World Grand Prix (97) of that decade and still a great game.
JFLALVARADO i quite liked the ps1 formula one game, for the time that blew my mind with its graphics etc
I love this game so much. So many good memories. But I am sure I played this in about December 10th 1997???
there were many f1 games on the console surprisingly
Hi I have a problem I'm playing this on Project64 but tyres wears out after very few laps, I'm not able to make a race do you know if it's a rom or emulator issue?
No idea sorry as I don’t use emulators but perhaps someone will see this and be able to help
Mika Häkkinen and Mclaren of course, won 2 championships against Schumacher :)
🇫🇮 👍
I remember the first time I saw this game about 2 years ago in one of those 50 games in 10 minutes type videos. I was blown away by the graphics for an N64 game. I saw the game for $.50 and picked it up. When I sat down to play it I was so incredibly turned off by the severe lack of sense of speed. The car never felt that it was going as fast as the speedo said. Actually it seemed like the car reached it's max speed at like 50MPH and made it nearly impossible to judge turns. I actually made money on the game when I traded it for a buck at a different store lol.
ah man that sucks, with all racing games if you play with the cockpit view the frame rate it much higher giving that sense of speed but i know a lot of people don't like to play racers that way :(
I always liked the Willams team and fave driver was Fernando Alonso for ages.
I bought the game before year ago and i was like this graphics are great for n64 and i saw your review and i was same moment sub to your channel
