    @msbj10 Actually, you're wrong! Whole grains are also broken down into sugars. Simply put: There are 2 major forms of carbs - simple/refined and complex. Both are broken down by the body into sugars but refined carbs are broken down and absorbed into the blood more easily by the body (white breads, refined sugar, white rice, lactose) whereas complex carbs are broken down and absorbed much more slowly by the body.

    Hello
    Best thing I ever did was start a Food Diary and a set of Digital kitchen scales. I was over 420 Lbs, The doctors scales didn't go any higher. I am down to about 295 Lbs with a "Target weight" of 265 Lbs at which point I get my Hip OP. (Osteoarthritis in one Hip so can't do the exercises like you can). I am also recently diagnosed type 2 Diabetic. I eat (Plain Boiled) Swede (11 Calories Per 100 Gms) instead of Potatoes (88 Cals Per 100Gms). Both I add a little Salt and Fresh crushed Black Pepper. I do eat Bread, Weight Watchers Brown @ 50 Cals a slice if I make a sandwich, Harvest Grain Fresh @ 100 Cals if I make an Open sandwich. At the moment I do not use Insulin as am controlling it with Medication and Diet, Sorry the "D" word but I have problems exercising so it is my only option. And what you are talking about the Bread, Pasta and Potatoes sounds very much like the Atkins Diet to me. Look it up and you will see what I mean. I live alone and watch TV whilst I eat, I have made my food to fit my Calorie Controlled Diet. I am different from you because I am in the U.K. 6 days a week I rotate 3 Cereals, No sugar with a little Semi Skimmed Milk. As a treat on Sunday I have 2 Scrambled Eggs on Toast (The Harvest Grain). All worked out to 240 Cals. By the way I have no Butter, Margarine or Sugar of any kind in my Flat

    Solid advice on the starches/sugar reduction. Take it from me who has lost about 20 lbs from cutting these out.
    A good rule of thumb is
    "If what you're eating doesn't have a mother or grow from the ground, DON'T eat it"
    Also I know you aren't a fan of packaged foods, yet you use high p.u.f.a. oils in cooking. These oils are what causes heart disease! Don't worry about butter, or the fat in bacon/red meat. we've been eating it for years and it doesn't contribute to heart disease
    Cheers.

    @bobissocoollike bread is never needed. try lettuce leaves for sandwiches. don't eat bread at the restaurant. If you have to have pizza, then eat some salad first. try cold cut rolls. Take ham and swiss and roll them and then dip in deli mustard. You will love it and not feel so heavy afterwards.

    Here's an eating tip that really works: Eat 5 or 6 meals a day, instead of 3, but make each meal smaller than normal. If we eat more often, our metabolism works better. Also, our bodies don't work as hard per meal to digest. This is easier to do than you might think. Just eat the 3 normal meals we usually eat with smaller portions and between those meals "snack" on a healthy fruit and veggie portion. You end up feeling full for a longer period of time.

    Hi Jack, thanks for making this video, it really inspired me. Right now I am losing weight too (I am overweight). I don't think you have to completely cut out pasta, potato, bread, but making alternatives such as whole wheat would be better if you have to eat it and control the portions. And like you said make sure you use it properly. For me, I found that eating more during breakfast and lunch, come dinner time I'm never hungry. Good luck and whenever I feel like lazy, i'm watchin this video.

  • @cookingwithjackshow

    @n2n001 if you are a very active person then yes. less active people should stay away from these carbs. The bread should be whole grain if you do have bread. Potatoes are pretty much useless in your diet. Although I am italian, Pasta is a very heavy starch, too. They just take a lot to burn off. Most people don't burn what they eat.

  • @fall22123
    @fall22123 5 років тому +2

    You shouldn't eat sugar or rice either. Sugar is pure carbs.

  • @letsgogiants98
    @letsgogiants98 13 років тому

    You need carbs in your diet. But what Jack is trying to say is:
    Pasta, Potatoes, and bread have extremely high Glycemic Index values, meaning that when you eat these foods, the very simple carbs get instantly converted to sugar, which initiates an insulin response. The insulin converts the sugar to fat.
    Foods like Oatmeal, rye bread, and unsweetened shredded wheat are much better for you. Much lower GI value, much more complex carbs. Won't initiate a tremendous insulin response.

  • @cookingwithjackshow
    @cookingwithjackshow  14 років тому

    @brandonllinhares rice is as unhealthy as pasta. Very small amounts are okay, but it is a starch just like the rest. If you burn carbs a lot then have at it. It's not a concern. If you sit around all day then stay away. I heard brown rices might be better than white. Try doing research on the internet.

  • @sbfbob

    @Firter this actually may be right to some point but when you do boil it, it breaks down the walls that hold the vitamins in which makes it a lot easier to break down. Some people say that it more healthy to not boil them but it is a lot harder for your body to break it down, then there the chance of your body not being able to break it down.
    So needless to say when you do boil it, yes it does destroy the nutrients but your body will break it down a lot faster and digest it faster.

  • @Snipper08
    @Snipper08 13 років тому +1

    If you really start to research this, you can find that overall fat is not harmful to your body to a certain extent. It IS better to eat more saturated fat than starch or trans fats. Also it has be proven that coconut oil, is better for you than extracted oils such "vegitable oil, and corn oil".

    I'm so happy for you! I usually eat healthy, subscribing to the quote (sorry I forget who) "eat food, not too much, mostly plants". I love that. And by "food" it means real food, not preprocessed, prepackaged, drive-through convenience foods. Luckily we both love to cook so we control what we are eating! I too avoid white, refined starches for the most part but I refuse to live my entire life without potatoes and french bread. Balance! (I understand for a diabetic it has to be different).

  • @chaodahh
    @chaodahh 14 років тому

    1) workout at least 3 times a week with some dumbbells or anything else
    2) eat 1.0-1.5g of protein for every pound of lean body weight
    3) and lastly, lower your calorie intake until you lose 1-2 lbs a week
    For your lean body weight, you need to know your body fat %. Here's an example: 200 lb man with 20% body fat, 200 * 20% = 40 lbs of fat, so that's 160 lbs of lean body mass
    Losing 1-2 lbs/week is the best amount to lose to prevent the "extra" loose skin from weight loss.

    Gotta agree with you Jack, most diets are gimmicks. I did have weight loss surgery last year but if I didn't eat well and exercise, even surgery is a waste of time. It is a great tool and I'm doing well. Eating well and exercise is a life-long learning process and journey. By the way, with the gastric bypass, diabetes is gone the next day in most cases. Look forward to watching your progress!

    Small portions are key.
    Losing weight isn't just about your diet (Note your diet not A diet), you lose weight when you burn more calories than you consume, and vice versa for putting on weight.
    You will not lose weight by simply cutting eating habits, exercise is also a key.
    Snacking on fruits also help. :)
    Your advice about chewing more is true, although another reason for it is that you become 'fuller' faster. This is a good reason why raisins are great to snack on.
    Brilliant episode jack.

    another tip is to eat a small (1/2 to one cup) before the main meal. Try and do this with very little dressing. The lettuce will turn to gelatin in your intestines and that makes digestion easier and the extra bulk in your stomach will help you to eat less.

    The problem is: a lot of fitness experts agree that it's not the weight that is the problem - it's inches! A lot of people have lost 2, 3, and more inches, but have gained because of increased muscle mass. Advertising insists on weight; therefore "the 20 minute workout" gurus (shills?) use weight loss as a come on! it can be a trap! In healthy "weight loss" the tape measure is FAR more important than the bathroom scale! Jack; to confess my sins, I'm a sometime watcher and I hope all has worked out for you!

    another useful tip I've found that works, although it's more of an exercise tip: find a form of exercise that you LOVE. I don't mean one that's tolerable, or even one that you like. I mean LOVE. If you love a form of exercise, then you are going to stick with it. And trust me, there are way more forms of exercise than we give credit to; you're bound to find one that you love.
    for instance, I lost A LOT of weight when I took up martial arts, which I love.

    5 small portions a day, instead of 3 large meals is the most common, especially among weight lifters.
    Theres a saying "Feed the furnace" The furnace being your body, you cant just dump everything in one go, it isnt efficient. Constantly feeding your self when you need the energy thats why 5 small portions a day is effective and recommended by every weight lifter, and every fitness expert.
    Diet is a poor word, its just avoid pre made products i.e salted snacks and packet foods.

    @sk8erguy552 the scam with bread is that they say sugar free and low calories. That doesn't even matter. What matters is the carbohydrates and the fact that it all turns into sugar in 24 minutes if I don't burn it off. That is what angers me about the bread industry. compare the carbs with other breads and tell me how it is.

    JACK. You might this piece of info helpful to know about drinking too much water before and during your meals: "Liquids taken during meals can dilute digestive enzymes and stomach acids and these are essential to break down the food and absorb nutrients. As it's harder to break down the food, the stomach may produce more acids, which could result in heartburn or acid reflux."

    I drink nothing but water, I still eat my favorite foods but no fast food, all of it is home cooked and I don't eat excess amounts of it. When you exclude your favorite foods, your mind is gonna go crazy when you change your regular eating habits and after a while, most of the time people will give in and eat more and gain the weight back, so if you set yourself to eat what you want, then your mind will remained balanced and you won't go crazy, add lots of exercise and you'll be losing weight.

    Good stuff Jack.
    In addition to your eating tips I'd recommend anyone looking to get in shape and live healthy to combine it with a basic workout programme (Stronglift's 5x5 is great for example). I had tremendous success losing fat (which is more important than losing weight btw) since I started doing it. And you don't have to cut out carbs completely. For example I eat them post-workout only (rice, pasta etc). That's okay as long as you eat lot's of healthy stuff all day.

    hey jack
    erm some of these tips you give are kinda wrong and dont wanna be harsh, but betta to know it before you givie advice to which people will use, all of the 3 things you highlighted in the beggiing you can totally eat, an eradication of these items is not nescary, 1st just eat brown bread, (you need to know the difference between a slow releasing carb and a fast one) cutting out bread entirely is a bit silly, tbh theres a lot but obvs with this comment space i cant say it all

    Also, great advice with ruining dinner, eating small portions throughout the day helps keep your metabolism active, so when it's finished with whatever you've eaten it'll start on any stored fat inside of you.
    Thanks for the great tips!

    @koropoklover I don't know what Jack would say, but AFAIK, If you knock out the cream and go to skim milk, then it shouldn't be that fattening anymore.

    Wow jack, i always thought that you don't care about eating healthy because of the things you were cooking (Bacon explosion, lazy mans pasta, the multi layer dip) but now i know that my opinion about you was totaly wrong. thanks for the tips, i will try to adapt them in th future. Greetings and good luck with losing weight in the future from Germany :)

    Seriously good advice there Jack and good luck!
    My only add on would be that you need carbs if you're going to do any serious cardio work. I'm about to do 30km and I had rice and chicken a few hours ago and it works great for me.

    @Doc367 rice and pasta are about the same type of starch. If your going to have a little rice have the whole grain rice.

    @ljewkes you are awesome for trying to get better. I have lost about 1-2 lbs a week since sept.
    I don't diet. I still eat this and that, but just not as much. I had a burger wrapped in lettuce tonight for dinner. Nothing else. Just that. No fries, no soda, nothing. I have really cut down my dinners a lot. Not by choice. My stomach doesn't seem to require as much food now. It's weird but true. Keep me posted. Your in my prayers.

    @richthecardude94 Jerky (most) isn't unhealthy for you. It's a great source of protein and as long as you use lean cuts of meat and not too much marinade.. very low in fat and carbs.

    @monkeyguyman1 don't fool yourself. it is slightly better, but still will turn into sugar in your body. Your body can survive without bread and pasta if needed.

    @taachibingu if you are heavy and live in Asia, try to cut your rice/pasta/noodles or ramen in 1/2 and increase your water and veggie intake. have more seafood and chicken.

    @danielc365 whole grain bread is the best of the bunch. The daily recommended amount is 1 slice. Each person is different. Some people are very active and require more carbs to burn or they will crash. You have to consult a Dr on where you are in your weight.

    stay way from low fat things cause they've usually added sugar in it, also stay away mayo,dressing, ready made dips etc. they also contains a lot of fat and other unhealthy things. have vegetables or fruits as snacks instead of candy. but remember that some unhealthy food are ok to have once in a while.

I hate that! sorry to hear about you having diabetes THAT SUX. I have a problem though my wife loves all the don'ts lol and I'm trying to gain weight not loose. Any Ideas on how I could "GAIN" weight the Healthy way? GOOD EPISODE HELPFUL TIPS. I don't have a dutch oven but we are gonna be doing the LAZY MANS roast soon.

    @g4r15 get a low sugar dressing. I just bought two different flavored vinaigrette dressings. both were 2g of sugar or less. those are better for you. try it and write back.

    @RaPeRmAsTeR1280 You need to figure out your body. If your in good shape then your fine. You don't have to stay away because you are probably burning it off. If you are heavy, then just cut back by 50% and add more veggies into the mix. Remember, rice is also binding and can make you not able to go to the bathroom. (constipated) You need to evaluate yourself and figure out what you need and don't need.

    I have been Type 2 for 15 years. I have not had any serious complications so far but I'm 59 so anything can happen. My last A1c was 7.3 which is not too bad. . I test my blood sugar EVERY DAY. You have to do this. You have to take your pills EVERY DAY. And you have to know what a certain blood test number means for you. People are different. Know what is too low and too high for you. There is a great TV show called DLife on CNBC diabetics need to watch, also DLife.com. Thnx for show.
