  • Johnson's Dance Orchestra was one of the many bands Bob Haring created and conducted. Other than being born on August 21, 1895, I couldn't find much about his childhood or what got him into music to begin with, but he seems to arrive on the scene in a big way, recording as the music director of the "new" Cameo Records label in 1922. He created multiple band names to help flesh out a catalog for the fledgling label such as The Lincoln Dance Orchestra, Western Wanderers, and bands that are or will soon be on this channel like The Dixie Daisies, Alabama Red Peppers, and The Detroiters. His recordings with these bands would also find their way onto the other dime store labels under the Plaza & American Record Corporation (ARC) umbrella like Romeo, Perfect, Oriole and others. His bands would include many up-and-coming big-namers like Tommy Dorsey, Leo McConville, Mike Mosiello, Charles Butterfield and Miff Mole.
In 1925, Haring contracted with Brunswick Records. This found him director of "The Regent Club Orchestra" and, following the deserved notoriety he gained from that, leader of "The Colonial Club Orchestra" in May 1926. By 1929, he was doing shows for CBS radio, as well as having been appointed the musical director for the Brunswick Recording Laboratories in New York City. Sadly that position was short lived, as Warner Brothers took over Brunswick in April 1930 and his contract was not renewed for 1931. He found himself recording for ARC and their labels (although I don't think he ever stopped if this timeline and the recording date for this song are anything to go by). He also dabbled in radio, but the growing popularity of swing music was changing the public's taste in music and by 1935, Haring's popularity started doing the opposite.
This song is called "I Never Knew", originally composed by Gus Kahn and Ted Fiorito. This recording took place in New York City on November 19, 1925.

    Early electric recording?

@@jourwalis-8875 I would guess. The sound and EQ is that of early electric, definitely less tinny than acoustic.
