This episode has allegorical references to a DS9 episode. Chief O'Brian is arrested on a diplomatic mission and accused of espionage by a new first contact race type scenario. He's innocent. Lack of understanding. He is sentenced to prison. Hard labor. His wife divorces him, his daughter disowns him, eventually he learns his friends die in war. His escape attempts are punished harshly. His prison friends are murdered. He grows old and psychotic. Bitter. Broken. Begging for death. .... Then he's woken up. The Federation petitioned for his release. He was in a mind prison. He'd only been "gone" for a few hours. The aliens use mind prisons instead of physical ones. O'Brian's wife, kid and friends were fine. He was going home. This mind-firked him. He had severe PTSD. He did more time in the mind prison than his real life. Then the show just glosses over it.

I don't understand why the captain was so evil to his friend. They made contact, saw that he'd given up and as soon as they knew plan b was a go they could have backed off. The emotional bit, the drama for the TV show, never would have happened. Even older Gordon would have worked it out, but not terrorized his family with existential dread. The captain coulda, woulda, shoulda granted Gordon that grace, didn't
Meanwhile, by their own logic the Orville and it's crew shouldn't even exist in this timeline. By remaining alive and well (something they condemn Gordon for), they are a walking middle finger to the very laws they are trying to enforce on him. The Orville and its crew are a walking tidal wave of a paradox, and they can't even be bothered to bend the rules for someone they claim to care for. Freaking hypocrits
yeah I keep thinking about that. They all remember the events of this timeline meaning it must still exist in some capacity at least through them. Also the fuel they were using which was from here should've disappeared before they could even use it if they were intending to use it to erase this reality. none of this makes any sense even by their own logic because it's badly written.
Yeah, if they were gonna be such sticklers for the "time rules" then by all rights they should have allowed their ship to be destroyed and everyone already dead waaaaay back in that other time travel episode. Total hypocrites!
So that's not how the logic applies. The reason they exist is because they sent him back and they eventually pick him up further in the past. Nothing is actually wrong with the logic as this timeline never actually existed.

Nah, it's been established that the timeline branches out, they talk about it with Gordon and his sandwich for Pete's sake, these guys brought back a Gordon from a different timeline. Meaning this Gordon made a choice and from there it branches, he's happy with his family while the crew get to be guilty as they gaslight themselves to thinking it was for the good of "not threatening the timeline"

@@Arbidarb it’s a lose lose either way I guess. Back to the future may not be accurate but there is one message we can agree on. DO NOT MESS WITH TIME 😆
Sadly this is true star trek has a much better and ethical approach on reorientating the timeliness on its original course while ensuring that all parties involved are satisfied with whatever outcome is chosen on
yes and no. What happens is that the original timeline is kept intact but this one disappears. This becomes a reality for the bit they exist there but once they leave it would have already been gone.
Assume that is true why say anything? Just wish him luck and leave. To tell Gordan you are going further back and erasing everything he has done for the last decade is just so cruel and unneeded.
As a person they did Gordon dirty so many times. In this episode they were 10 years late to get him. So he eventually made a family. He has a wife and kid. So they go back 10 years to prevent all that. So Gordon has no idea. But captain still knows. In a different episode Issac cut off Gordon's leg as a joke. So they re grow his leg. But put him to work before his leg is done. Then later he gets stabbed in the new leg.

Exactly my toughts, the moment they say they're going back and erasing everything (including the kid) I would've just ''erased'' them from that timeline.
Well the only way one can play God with history is changing actual historical moments that one knows will have a direct impact on the future this is just blind discipline
This episode pissed me off ngl. Dude finally found true love and they kept trying everything to tske it away cause theyre the ones who fucked up the jump. I believe they occurred in different timeline tho thankfully like in one timeline he died and thats how they found out in the first place.
Captain could've totally just NOT said anything. Like, let this version feel at peace, happy, even if it is only a few moments more. It was not necessary to tell this version that he or this present family is going to be wiped from existence. Just go back in time without a word and go along your way.
I mean technically the moment he went back by accident, the moment they missed they should nit interacted at all cause they would have been making active intentional changes to the new time
They were unnecessary cruel to him. They also didn't need to tell him that they would go back another ten years and thus prevent his family from existing. It was like rubbing salt into a wound
What makes their decision to ruin Gordon's new life even worse is that they're not even doing it to save the timeline they're doing it to save the timeline where their federation has power.
they only had enough fuel or whatever to go this far back and they stupidly decided to approach him here instead of staying out of it until they could go a little further to the correct time.
"Oops, we arrived ten years off. Well, let's certainly not approach this timeline's Gordon. Why worry him? From that obituary we read, he's having a fine time. Instead, lets just go dig up some time fuel, best far from any population center, then we'll pop back 10 years, rescue Gordon right on time, and head back home. Maybe this current Gordon life will do like a split-off multiverse thing, who knows? And if we do wipe out Gordon's existence here, no need to stress him out about it."
I always wished there had been more ramifications to this decision later in the season. Ed feeling guilty for doing the right thing, knowing how much of a betrayal it was to Gordon, and Gordon having recurring memories of this life that was erased. Ed also could have chosen not to tell Gordon what he was going to do. Telling them was probably the cruelest thing you could do since theres nothing they can do to stop it.
Honestly, I was expecting Erased Gordon to be the final boss of the series. Comes back with some Time Dreadnought to erase those who took everything from him.
I'm glad to see people calling the bs of this episode out. The hypocrisy of Ed and Kelly are off the scale. Kelly contaminated a society and was worshipped. Ed changed time by not letting his crew/ship be destroyed in that storm that the time traveler saved them from. None of them should exist but here they are. So Gordon not only loses his family he regresses as a character overall. Trash writing.
I cant believe no one in Eds crew objected to this. But MacFarlane can fix this by showing the consequences of not following the prime directive. And then bring this Gordon back to get revenge on the Orville.
Wait, i havent watched The Orville much But if they had the power to go back and get him from the second he went back in time. Why did they go through the trouble for doing all this. They traumatized this man. And told him he was nothing. And his life. His world, and his family meant nothing. Just to tell him. "Well, we will just go back to the beginning and stop this. And you can't do shit, and you have to obey." Why not just. You know. DO THAT TO BEGIN WITH! Idk, if its just the lack of not watching this episode. But that seems pretty fucking stupid, for people thousands of years ahead in the future. To think that THIS. Is the most logical way to go about this...
That would be the best course of action seeing as they (the family..sorry I forgot the gals caracter name) are not a significant part of the time line taking them to the future won't upset anaything as Gordon's wife did not contribute to anay significant historical event
They even say during the episode that nobody actually knows how time travel works so all of this drama basically for something they don't even know anything about.
So Gordon having a personal life bad, but allowing that blonde lady to save the Orville many episodes prior, good. 100% the Orville being saved affected the timeline, they even reinforced that during the Kaylon Arc.
To be fair, Gordon is the best here as he was able to do. What back to the Future does so blend in He didn't create himself as a big important at the guy. He just played the average Joe smo In all honesty the Orville could have easily taken the novel. Yes, it's screwing with time but time is already being screwed with to begin with And other members have done it use it to their advantage so
But aren't you playing god by "fixing" history, tho it's already been "rewritten," but from there perspectives, that's the original timelime, so who's really playing God?
You know, when Zorg Lightyear wanted to restart his timeline, the entire movie labeled him as the villain, and now here, heroes are doing the exact same thing
The fact that Gordon’s obituary exists in the Orville’s database means that his 21st Century life and death are already part of Earth’s history. Removing him from the 21st Century would cause a paradox. I am betting that rescuing him in 2015 created an alternate timeline. The twist is that the timeline where Gordon died in the 21st Century is the actual timeline that the Orville is from. A bigger question is did any of the Orville crew ever tell Gordon what they did to his alternate timeline family?
They didn’t have to tell him that stuff. They wanted to. They just loved to pretend they had the moral high ground and watch him and his family suffer before they end them.
The fact that they argued with him to begin with, they could have just chosen to leave that reality alone and go to 2015. They didn't need to go through that. 😅
A lot of people miss the point.. they took an easier jump first and LET him suffer alone for years where they couldve done the longer jump to where he hadnt suffered as much (never watched the show, no clue if they addressed it)
The discussion on these clips is good…. The entire point of this episode (And so many other storylines in both Orville and Star Trek) is to create this discussion surrounding the morality of various situations people could find themselves in in these SciFi universes. I think this is one of the best time travel stories ever put to screen period. Because all of them are right and all of them are wrong. There a simply is so much to think about and discuss regarding the ramifications of what happens here that there is no way to actually BE right or wrong. First thing first though; I see a lot of people who obviously haven’t actually seen the episode or understood what happened in it. Gordon was accidentally sent back in time when he tried to destroy the Aronov device during a Kaylon attack (The Aronov device manipulates objects through time and the Kaylon wanted it so they could change history, so Ed ordered the device destroyed before they could get it). After the crew determined he had been sent to the year 2015 they immediately tried to use the Aronov device to send the ship back to 2015 to get him. However the device only had enough Dysonium (its fuel source) to send the ship back to 2025, ten years after Gordon arrived. They didn’t abandon him or forget about him, they simply didn’t have enough fuel to make the entire journey. While in 2025 they found a dysonium source that they had to mine in order to power the device, and they tracked down Gordon who had now lived in the past for 10 years. They found he had created a life for himself and had a family in the past, which is a very bad thing because it could do untold damage to the timeline; people being born (or not being born) who make a big impact on history could potentially make a dramatic change 200 years in the future. Gordon refuses to leave his family (As anybody should expect) so with the Aronov device refueled Ed leaves him and takes the ship back another 10 years into the past and rescues Gordon only a few months after he appeared in 2015, having never left isolation or started a family. Gordon was wrong: To do anything which changed the past. He should have continued isolating himself, or committed suicide once he gave up home of being rescued. Marrying the woman he married changed her life. Perhaps the kids she didn’t have in the original timeline were instrumental in creating the Union, or establishing space travel. Maybe with future knowledge from his father the son Gordon has with her in the alternate timeline will alter humanity’s timeline for entering space as well. That could change Humanity’s entire place in the galaxy in the future. Gordon was right: He couldn’t have isolated himself, or been expected to do so for 10 years. He understandably felt abandoned (Even though he wasn’t) and his actions of seeking out someone to spend a life with, despite being wrong, are understandable. Ed and Kelly were right: Gordon shouldn’t have been allowed to stay on Earth in the past. He shouldn’t have been allowed to start a family. He shouldn’t have been allowed to change history. Ed and Kelly were wrong: They arrived ten years too late to change anything. The timeline had already been corrupted. Showing up in Gordon’s life and expecting him to abandon what he’d built for those ten years was simply harsh and not the correct solution. Leaving his son without a father, wife without a husband…. And to emphasize, it didn’t address the corruption that had already occurred to the timeline. The damage was already done, and taking Gordon away at that point was closing the barn door after the horse has escaped. Ed and Kelly were wrong to show up in Gordon’s life and expect to take him away from it. They should have never entered the timeline themselves and sought him out, but instead they should have focused on refueling the Aronov device and continuing the journey to 2015 so they could rescue him while corrupting the timeline as little as possible. One more random thought: The alternate timeline that Gordon created still exists IMHO. The crew left him there, with his family. They’re there, we saw them. They don’t simply cease to exist when the crew leaves to fetch Gordon from the earlier past, or they’d have never existed to begin with, and since we saw them they clearly exist. Just in an alternate reality. Paradoxes can be fun, but if this show is ever greenlit for more seasons I expect this parallel universe to turn up again as The Orville’s version of the Star Trek Mirror universe, where Gordon’s contamination of the timeline has altered history in a major way and humanity is either a much more aggresive, bad species, or they’re on the backburner of the universe and used as slaves.
I kinda hope they do some sort of Marvel type trick to have this specific Gordon come back and he becomes the villain of a season, wanting revenge on Mercer and the Union
I would love to see a sequel to this episode. Gorden was prepared and had created a device to protect himself from changes to the timeline. Putting himself or one of his family in staisis to wake up in the future to destroy the Orville and its crew...
This moment made me furious to the point I stopped watching the show, after all those years if nothing bad had happened from his actions nothing bad was ever going to happen! Gordon deserved to be happy and they took away the perfect life he always wanted.

The position he was in was hard but Ed was right here.
Yeah. Was this intentional or accidental?
Bro that’s fucked
He did it to himself!
Cap shouldn’t’ve showed his cards by mentioning 2015. If anything, he should’ve played with a poker face and left. There would’ve been less pain and less bickering about the whole issue.
Ya probably, more dramatic for the show tho
This captain and the whole crew are clowns, arrogant assholes.
Agreed! He put that man, his best friend, through way more pain and suffering for absolutely NOTHING.
If they had the power to go back to 2015 to get him....... Why not do it in the first place?
@@D3R3bel From what I understood, their first jump couldn’t be dialled in to be that accurate, hence why they landed 10 years after the arrival date. However, a different team was dialling in the settings and gathering enough fuel to launch the second jump back to 2015 to stop the nonsense that took place and save their crew mate.
Props for the line "the door or the floor!?!"
This is the first I've heard it and I have to say I like it. I'm glad that character got to say it!
Totally using that if anyone ever breaks into my house.
It goes incredibly hard and I'm glad they gave it to this character.
You gotta admit its rather messed up in many ways that there just ok with essentially killing his family his life and making him all unaware of it hell they dont even tell him and i can imagine when he does find out he would want to quit after that

Mmhmm sad and ethical my only disapproval of this episode is not trying to find a loophole as this is not yet a fixed piont it can still be molded and bended to give everyone involved a better choice and that's just it cptn mercer didn't even consider to give the rest of maloys family a choice or a say after all they are human with moral rights that basacly burthed the moral values of the union they forgot that part
I mean even star fleet would consider a loophole and some cptns in starfleet aren't even human and still they would reconsider
They thought they needed the expositional dialog to make it more dramatic and fill time. It's called (lack of) good writing.
Can’t even gift him the peace of mind. They didn’t need to tell him they were gonna erase his life lmfao.
It didn’t matter bc he wouldn’t remember until Ed told him after going back for him in 2015

@@aaronmontgomery2055 I think he meant to saisd that they themselves were saved by a time traveler, they should have died long ago. But since they forgot they aren't aware that they broke the rule
@@somethingbanter Branching timelines, something that was somewhat adressed by John Lamarr, although jokingly, with the scene around the sandwhich send back/forward in time.
As soon as you interfer with events either forward or backward from your own timeline, that timeline then branches off from that point, so essentially then two individual timelines exist parallel to each other...and the more you jump around, the more you try to "fix" something, the more branches you create.
He should have gone out fighting. I still hate they didn’t have him actively fight them from leaving. Yes it should happen and yes the ending makes sense but seeing him fight tooth and nail would have been better, because he’s right too. They abandoned him then blamed him for being human.
Abandoned how? Explain to me how they abandoned him?
Nah, it's been established that the timeline branches out, they talk about it with Gordon and his sandwich for Pete's sake, these guys brought back a Gordon from a different timeline. Meaning this Gordon made a choice and from there it branches, he's happy with his family while the crew get to be guilty as they gaslight themselves to thinking it was for the good of "not threatening the timeline"
What's worse is that this Gordon is with his family but because of this interaction, he and his family live with existential dread of what could happen

DO NOT MESS WITH TIME
😆
If they go 10yrs back and take him out, then he will not have been there 10yrs into the future when they thought to go 10yrs back
Yeah because the show is written by people who don't understand anything about time travel and just want to create drama for no reason.
All time travel is paradoxical.
Ha, when he shouts about murder he sounds like Steve from American Dad. Same actor / voice ofc but still funny.
Dude, I didn't know that. That's Hella cool. I knew Bortus is on Family Guy's newer seasons, but that's cool

Gordon is so right.
Him traveling back was the timeline they went and removed him this altering the standard flow
Not gonna lie soon as he said we will go back 5 years! Zap zap zap full power!
That was freaking evil...the callous way they are going to do that...they are not playing...they are playing the devol
Thats disgusting to just decide for him. Iff in their time everything is still fine it means it didn't alter much. They have no empathy for him.
You gonna kill us? , you or my children? Any last words?
Exactly my toughts, the moment they say they're going back and erasing everything (including the kid) I would've just ''erased'' them from that timeline.
He has a point no one should play God with time
And who are they to say this reality was never meant to exist That's not up to you to decide that
Well the only way one can play God with history is changing actual historical moments that one knows will have a direct impact on the future this is just blind discipline
TVA JUDGE: what Gordon did is supposed to happen, and you are not. He has a family in that timeline as the timekeeper dictating.
They neglected him, and murdered his kids basically and then found a version of him WHO WOULD APOLOGIZE TO THEM FOR IT, its actually sickening
It's not sickening, they saved him from a lot of trouble
From a crew that already time travelled to change things.
Gordon is always getting the crap end of the stick
Coldest scene in TV or movies. They did him so wrong. “Don’t want to go with us? No problem, we’ll just go further back in time.”
Past Jelly literally destroyed everything and caused a galactic apocalypse by altering the course of time not that they remember that.
Gordon's plea after that when the others leave is heartbreaking.
And that’s when he realized they needed to die
Remember when the crew of the Orville was OK with altering the timeline to save themselves back in season 1? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
They could have just not told him. Like it was way more fucked up to tell him and distress him more and upset his family.
"The door or the floor" goes hard
This event singlehandedly killed all interest I had in watching the series. Well done, writers.
What makes their decision to ruin Gordon's new life even worse is that they're not even doing it to save the timeline they're doing it to save the timeline where their federation has power.
Ironic, he basically playing god with that phrase, and then being terrible captain. Filling his family with existential fear.
Why did they even tell him about the plan to skip back 10 years? That seemed so cruel and unnecessary.
They could have done that without saying right to Gordon because then Gordon has all the reason to stun them to prevent them 😅
Number one rule of the Orville is Gordon is never allowed to be happy.
If they can go back 10 years to pick up his past self... what was the point of seeing this version of him?
they only had enough fuel or whatever to go this far back and they stupidly decided to approach him here instead of staying out of it until they could go a little further to the correct time.
The captain just trying to wipe his ass covering the crime he has done abandoning his crew in the past.
it wasn't his fault, Gordon was sent back in time completely out of anyones control, and the captain is trying to get him back
The most heartbreaking episode in this series.
Leave my man Gordon alone
That was the one time I thought the captain took things too far.
Cause you're basically ending a child's life and ruining your friends family 😅
"Oops, we arrived ten years off. Well, let's certainly not approach this timeline's Gordon. Why worry him? From that obituary we read, he's having a fine time. Instead, lets just go dig up some time fuel, best far from any population center, then we'll pop back 10 years, rescue Gordon right on time, and head back home. Maybe this current Gordon life will do like a split-off multiverse thing, who knows? And if we do wipe out Gordon's existence here, no need to stress him out about it."
A branch time line
Technically, Gordon eyes in 2025 will not be changed, he will continue.
But for 2015 Gordon, well his journey is to come back to the distant future.
He'll be more angry and ruthless than Khan
I actually agree with for ten how his being so wrong be in past
I always wished there had been more ramifications to this decision later in the season. Ed feeling guilty for doing the right thing, knowing how much of a betrayal it was to Gordon, and Gordon having recurring memories of this life that was erased.
Ed also could have chosen not to tell Gordon what he was going to do. Telling them was probably the cruelest thing you could do since theres nothing they can do to stop it.
He should take his children and leave his wife to have never met him and live her life in the proper timeline.
Honestly, I was expecting Erased Gordon to be the final boss of the series. Comes back with some Time Dreadnought to erase those who took everything from him.
This kind of reminds me of those South Park post covid specials.
Wait, i havent watched The Orville much
But if they had the power to go back and get him from the second he went back in time. Why did they go through the trouble for doing all this. They traumatized this man. And told him he was nothing. And his life. His world, and his family meant nothing. Just to tell him. "Well, we will just go back to the beginning and stop this. And you can't do shit, and you have to obey."
Why not just. You know. DO THAT TO BEGIN WITH!
Idk, if its just the lack of not watching this episode. But that seems pretty fucking stupid, for people thousands of years ahead in the future. To think that THIS. Is the most logical way to go about this...
Cheap melodrama.
The fuel they “borrowed”, that act alone, should be examined for temporal repercussions
Just have them his family go back with him to the future
That would be the best course of action seeing as they (the family..sorry I forgot the gals caracter name) are not a significant part of the time line taking them to the future won't upset anaything as Gordon's wife did not contribute to anay significant historical event
"What are you gonna do kill us" yes without hesitation or apology 😊
Theyre clearly not being apologetic or remorseful.
It might have been worth risking bringing Gordon and his family into the future aboard the Orville rather having their existence end.
Won't that create a time paradox making it more f*cked that it is now😂. They operate a time machine and don't know the basics 😅.
They even say during the episode that nobody actually knows how time travel works so all of this drama basically for something they don't even know anything about.
@@somethingbanter ikr
So Gordon having a personal life bad, but allowing that blonde lady to save the Orville many episodes prior, good.
100% the Orville being saved affected the timeline, they even reinforced that during the Kaylon Arc.
To be fair, Gordon is the best here as he was able to do. What back to the Future does so blend in
He didn't create himself as a big important at the guy. He just played the average Joe smo
In all honesty the Orville could have easily taken the novel. Yes, it's screwing with time but time is already being screwed with to begin with
And other members have done it use it to their advantage so
The "we'll see you soon" is so coldhearted
What episode is this
I found on Hulu under New Horizons, episode 6
S3 e6
I actually as a sci-Fi guy appreciated this episode a lot
But aren't you playing god by "fixing" history, tho it's already been "rewritten," but from there perspectives, that's the original timelime, so who's really playing God?
That was probably one of the hardest hitting episodes from that series.
You know, when Zorg Lightyear wanted to restart his timeline, the entire movie labeled him as the villain, and now here, heroes are doing the exact same thing
Im kinda with gordon, because he has a family now there, he can't just leave them forever
Damn, one of the best story lines in all science fiction, in my opinion
They did Gordon DIRTY!
TBH I love this episode and it's one of the most nuanced takes on the whole morals of time travel thing I've ever seen
Really, at the point they were telling me they were killing my kids, that phaser setting goes up a notch.
Yep
"The Door or The Floor" is crazyyy 😅😂
They didn’t have to tell him that stuff. They wanted to. They just loved to pretend they had the moral high ground and watch him and his family suffer before they end them.
Gordon is the villain in this episode
This episode hit harder than most Star Trek episodes are willing. Keep waiting for the happy fix everything solution, and it never comes.
Really felt for Gordon in this episode and was disgusted at their treatment of him and his family.
The fact that they argued with him to begin with, they could have just chosen to leave that reality alone and go to 2015. They didn't need to go through that. 😅
Sounds like the crew needs to be stranded there for a decade to really understand what they put this man through.
They could have checked history to see if he did anything to damaging. He may have just lived a quiet life and not much would have changed.
This is one of the HARDEST scenes I truly have ever seen.... the acting was GOD TIER, and I bout actually cried if I didn't before.
It's funny how Seth set out to make a comedy/spoof Star Trek style series but ended up making the best Star Trek series since Enterprise.
This moment made me furious to the point I stopped watching the show, after all those years if nothing bad had happened from his actions nothing bad was ever going to happen! Gordon deserved to be happy and they took away the perfect life he always wanted.
