    After doing theatre work for 3 years, I realized he just summed up my entire experience in 2 minutes. You're taught to approach and handle scenes in this exact way. Lines are nothing, it's what's in between them that you have to memorize. Once you learn to embody the truth to your man, the lines come naturally.

    • @lisagennamore-fq8bq
      @lisagennamore-fq8bq 8 місяців тому

      Because you are a natural

    • @rembo183
      @rembo183 5 місяців тому +1

      No matter what, You do need to know the lines to do the performance. But you need to convey true meaning and the reality of the scene. The truth. The lines or script is essential as a foundation which must be memorized to act. Forgetting lines is not going to work. After you,learn the lines they become less important and in the final analysis are not critical to success. It’s the truth and meaning you convey and the way you make it real. So the lines are important to build on. Memorize them for audition or you’ll fail for sure!

That way you can elaborate about it, if need be, and actually take it with you instead of just dumping it the second you’re done with it.

    Boy I am so glad you referenced your character Rustin Cohle in true detective, by the love of the artistic spirits, what a great stunning performance, I watched s1 of true detective about 10 times. So good, no, so great, and that performance really falls in line with what you say in the video, a true example of a character coming to life! I think that film hours is not quite enough for that to happen, especially complex characters like Rust are more suited for a "long movie" format. Blessings from Italy.

    This is the best advice! The way we were taught in drama school follows the same philosophy. Instead of Rote-learning, understand what is actually happening in the scene and try and conceptualise it. Once you understand the scene, the lines will come to you naturally, so reading it over and over is definitely a much better approach, like Matthew says

    This is super cool! It reminds me of how music performers are always asked how they remember all those notes they're playing. And, interestingly, their reaction is exactly the same. The great performers don't think about the notes at all. They know the material so well that they can really make music instead of merely playing notes. Just like Mr. McConaughey can really act as opposed to just reciting lines.
    Awesome stuff.

    I have done various sketches and other actor performances in front of audiences on various occasions, and I have heard that I apparently seem to have great potential as an actor, and my "trick" is generally to simply truly feel like the character that I am playing, with real emotions and everything - basically, "method acting". This really adds a deep level of believable realism to everything.

    Very intresting approach, can't be wrong. Thank you Mr McConaughey for sharing. The idea I used (in my very limited theater experience), is 1st read the text by reading in (seeing) in silence, then the 2nd time read it out loud (to hear it), 3rd write down (feel) some of the important lines you liked, then have someone read it with you and finally talk about it. That way, all the information end up in the same hub but go there conected with different wires. That, is another method to get that variety that Mr McConaughey is talking about.

    That's cool, I like hearing actors talk about how they immerse themselves in a character. For example, no one comes to mind, but I've heard them explain how they'll totally believe and live as a particular character, months before shooting the movie ever begins.

    Good advice. Ive gathered that many actors want to find the best connection on all accounts. Whatever works best for them. For da audience, the writers, the story, character, etc...
    If theres one thing Ive learned that can send people over seemingly impossible obstacles, its to truely enjoy what one is doing, to have passion... submerge yourself and put the rest aside or a moment..

    That’s pretty cool...that bit about reading the lines happy, sad, high, tired, mad....in essence, that repeated reading of the lines in a variety of mental states, makes it easier - more real - to “convey” the character to the audience in those moments that the script calls for, regardless of the emotion at that point. I’m not an actor, by any stretch, but I will tell you that as a retired law enforcement officer, we used to say when training, allow the “contact” (the public) to be the director, and respond according to his/her demeanor, which facilitates maintaining control. I know, it seems counter-intuitive.....but you’d be surprised how allowing the contact to swear, be angry, sad, excited, nervous (within reason)....gives a good law enforcement officer the cues he/she needs to maintain control....to “act appropriately” to the “director’s” cues. I found this short video incredibly insightful. Besides his genuine candor, McConhaughey is an outstanding actor!

    The (acting/overall) quality of True Detective s1 and Dallas Buyers' was just phenomenal... Such pearls are rare. Walken/Hopper Sicilian-scene in True Romance comes to mind. Or Walken in At Close Range (which is very underrated IMO).
