Great job and skills! much better than Cooperdrummer shettt who only knows how to twirl sticks and shett.. this one no showboating, all skills!!! this is what we want to see!
That’s awesome. I’m an absolute beginner, started 2 months ago with an electronic kit. If I intend to remain married it’ll have to do. I’ve been working on this song all week and without any real guidance or sheet music I’m happy to see I haven’t been far off on which toms, kick and cymbals to use. It’s going to take A LOT of practice to get your speed on the fills. This is incredible. Thanks for posting.
I'm late but damn I almost have the same situation, also started recently and learned for whom the bell tolls as my first real song. Search "drumistry for whom the bell tolls drum score" on youtube. It's the original so it's less epic but also easier. Good luck with future drumming!
this song was meant for double bass! always adds ear candy to a very (powerful) straight forward jam! lars doest do this anymore. he did it this way from mid 80s -well into 2000s. always a joy to hear. great cover !!!!!
I love how Josh plays it (fantastic drummer, and so good-looking). But his cover also shows off how Metallica were quickly becoming the progressive monster seen on MASTER OF PUPPETS. If you listen closely to the subtle shift at 1:23, you can hear the time signature change from a standard 4/4 to more grooving, yet still crushing, 6/8. The switch is slight, and the untrained ear may not pick up on it, but this seems to be a logical progression from the heads-down brutality of KILL 'EM ALL and towards the progressive brilliance of MASTER. Plus, if you divorce your hearing from the drums (not always easy to do considering how hard Josh is playing), you can hear various elements of the guitars and bass locking in to form a melodic battering ram. It's actually a testament to just how good they were at writing mini-epics, as well as their ability to give the songs sleek, slick, streamlined arrangements.
Atleast he doesnt overplay a song like For Whom like cooper did. How in godsname do you not realize you shouldn't overplay a tune as For Whom in the first place.
you're the best drummer I've ever seen on youtube, creative and innovative, keep it up, very cool, when I heard the strike of the beast of the exodus thought my ears would burst
Even in the beginning Liars had to have fun play in the song every night on the tour you did this one perfect as well this one actually look really really really fun
@@joshsteffen I think you're better than that lars right now😂I love the old lars, the time he still used 4 Tom and 2 floor, The sound of the lars drum is now not as violent as it used to be
I don’t think some people understand what this guy has to do to make this video . Lars timing is all over the place on this live recording . Do for you to be able to sink up with the recording.....😳 great job . A few too many triplets on the kick for me but all in all impressive considering.
wow just wow ... awesome man , just playing a bit fast , but so far the best Lars drumming immitation , great job , you got talent , and double bass is spot on
***I'm a little late checking this out Josh but, this is Super Fucking Good! LIVE just like Metallica should always play. The first time I saw them was in 1983 in San Francisco @ The Stone opening for Y&T. I don't love every Metallica song recorded...BUT...I LOVE EVERY METALLICA SONG LIVE! Seen them at least 15 times without 1 disappointment! MORE LIVE covers please JOSH!***
FUCK YES! YOU DID IT! If I had a set I was gonna cover the live performances too! Great minds think alike ... Just watched the Creeping Death cover, you kick fucking massive ass bro. Keep it up. \m/
Hey Josh! i also try to play this song and have a Question because of the fill starting at 2:32 : there are 7 hits on the snare and one bd/crash in 16th triplet. and then 1 16th triplet break. then 5 16th triplet on the toms. the next hit on bd/crash is on one, right? is this just a littlebit odd? thanks for your help!
Great job! Please ignore me, these are study notes:
Intro#1 0:50
Intro#2 1:05
Intro#3 1:31
Intro#4 1:47
Intro#5 1:55
Verse#1 2:17

Verse#3 3:41
Chorus#1 3:17
This is just simply the best drum cover of For Whom The Bell Tolls.
Yeah unlike cooper
Yes
Yes its the live shit binge and purge for whom the bell tolls. Also its live so of course its gonna be almost the same
i don't even play drums but i love that triple sound that he makes with his feet.
it is satisfying, listen to basically any justice song and you'll hear it (dyers eve, blackened, shortest straw)
The double bass is fucking incrdible
Good job brother

I agree :')
+David Ellefson that he is.

+David Mustaine lmao.

Sounds about right. I don't break things down like that though. I just listen and try to recreate it. It's an unspoken thing.
