Matt you should do an upgrade series of videos on the Mongoose and make it "Building the Ultimate Mongoose" then go test it on some really difficult trails for hardtails there's another video (Difficult Trails for Hardtails" lol. Those would be cool videos. You do great stuff bro keep it up.

If you're an 80's kid like me, you might also remember GT/Dyno, Haro, Redline, Kuwahara, Skyway (and their mags), Hutch, CW, and Torker. Not mountain bikes, but as kids we jumped our bikes by stacking bricks and cinder blocks and dropping a sheet of plywood to make a ramp. This only prepared us for mountain biking as we got older. Even some of the freestyle tricks like rock walks -- we do it now even on our mountain bikes. Wheelies became manuals. Who remembers hopping your front tire on a curb and dragging your back tire? Ha ha. I can't do that now with tires costing $100.

It's true what you said about Mongoose being one of the better brands back in the day. I'm restoring a 1997 Mongoose Rockadile I bought at a bike shop no longer in business. I still have the bike shop's sticker on seat tube (Bike Barn). I still prefer XT V-bakes over disc and the Marzocchi Bombers forks still work perfectly, so those will stay on the bike. I also rebuilt my Shimano 747 pedals - better than new. My brother-in-law, who also owned his own bike shop, gifted me 26" Salsa rims with XT hubs. So, the only things I'll be upgrading to are Spank handlebars and 60mm stem, a 1X10 drive train (either XT or SLX), and PWN external dropper post. I nicknamed my bike "Ol' Timer" and it's a nice compliment to my Rocky Mountain Inspire (nicknamed Big Bertha).

Hi Mat, thank you for your work, I really appreciate it. I am 45, so I remember Mongoose very well, they were one of my favorite brands. in 1998 I went for new HT and Mongoose IBOC series were among top 3. The another was Schwinn Moab1 and the winner was Scott comp racing. I love those years, Thomas Frischknett, John Tomac, Paola Pezzo... The way you present MTB is how I like it the most, enjoying ride, nature, sport, adventure, trails, exploring... and for that you do not need $8K carbon bike, cool tatoos and flowtrails. Back to roots :-)

Good review. The biggest thing that this bike has it going for is this frame. As you said, it's a solid frame that's upgradable in the future with the modern geometry and tapered head tube. I have a 2020 Mongoose Switchback Sport that I upgraded to a Microshift Acolyte drivetrain. It works very well.

The problem with the 1 and 2 more than anything is they are not boost, so wider tires won’t fit. The Switchback 3 is a much better base with much better (still entry) components. The problem is you’re in Roscoe 6 pricing territory and the new Roscoe 6 looks to be much better value.
Just looking at the frames, I would say Roscoe 6 if you want more aggressive and Switchback 3 if you’re more XC oriented. I wouldn’t look at the 1 or 2 for anything more than casual trail riding.

  • @aaronbehindbars

Mongoose still has some brand equity, so they can charge more than Walmart does for their Ozark Trail bikes, but you can't tell me that a set of off-brand hydro discs is worth $300 between this and the OT Ridge. $60-70 will get you a set of Shimano MT200s plus another $20-30 if you want a 180mm front rotor.
This bike makes sense at $599 retail and I'd expect to see Dicks's doing occassional sales down to $499. The lower spec Switchback Comp needs to be $100-150 less. When you can get a Canyon Grand Canyon 5 for $750 with a Deore 12 speed drivetrain, Shimano brakes, and a better fork (still coil, but lockout and rebound adjustment), $700 is gettin' 'Goosed!
The whole straight steerer vs tapered is also not something to worry much about. First, the average rider can't tell the difference in how they feel. Second, most straight head tubes are 44mm meaning you can swap in an EC44 lower headset to use a tapered steerer fork. If you are wanting to upgrade to an air fork, but keep your original QR front wheel, you are likely looking at a straight steerer fork anyway (unless you buy one of those awful ZTZ/Balony/Lutu/Himalo forks...please don't).
Mongoose and Dicks priced this too close to what you can get a nicer bike, so ot's a pretty hard sell. Also, keep in mind they list the full retail at $899 with the sale price of $699. That's nuttier than the brakes they put in these! They will likely have to sell these at full retail some of the time so they can legally advertise that $699 "sale" price.

You can put a tapered fork on the Marlin. I put one on my girlfriend’s bike. You just need to replace the ZS lower headset with an external headset cup. Wolf tooth makes one, cane creek makes one. In my case I used a Works Angle set to also slacken the head-tube angle a little. Slackening the head-tube angle also negated the increase in head-tube length. Then I laced up a 15mm thru axel front hub and the bike was great!

There should be a clutch or something on the derailer to reduce the chain slap a bit. I bought Marin Bobcat Trail 4 and had the same issue with the chain.
When i bought the bike i become addicted and i pretty much changed every single thing on the bike even tho it wasn't neccesary at all, it just made me happy. I still consider the bike as budget bike, but my upgrades doubled the price for sure which i dont think is healthy.
When it comes to fork, there are some decent air forks out there with quickrelease option such as Rockshox Judy, Suntour Epixon or even Raidon, but u'll most likely need adapter for it and some of them can be pricey.
Great vid Matty and have fun out there.

I use that same derailleur on my bike and don’t get that much chain slap. I suspect that either the Spring Lock (as they call it) was not engaged or the chain needs to lose a couple of links.

They'll sell plenty of them, most folks will ride on greenways and gravel trails and that's it, and this bike is fine for that. The person who buys this bike will not know anything about local bike shops except that they're full of $2500+ bikes, so this will seem like the reasonable alternative. As a product, it's priced to be placed perfectly between something you get at Walmart and the higher-priced bike shops.

Here’s the question, will a $699 Trek Marlin be as well equipped and have a tapered head tube? No. Even if you buy one of the more expensive Marlin models and improve the equipment, you’ll still have the non tapered head tube. That said, since the Marlin has a 44mm head tube, you can buy and install an adapter for tapered forks. The Mongoose is still a better deal. Recently, they had it on sale for $549, which make it an even better deal.

At that price point, I would expect a little more. Either the derailleur/cassette should be a low end Shimano or the brakes be another entry level name brand. Companies like mongoose made exciting bikes with great components back in the day but just like other big dogs, they either went bankrupt or sold off to corporate conglomerates who's focus is profit which is why they started to fall short but with competition they need to step up their game & build better bikes for survival, as of 2021 Pon Holdings owns Mongoose, Schwinn, Cannondale, GT, Santa Cruz, Cervelo, Caloi, Iron Horse, Derby Cycle, Kalkhoff, and Veloretti. Best way to beat some of the competition is to buy them out which is what it looks like to me, now I got all that boring stuff out of the way, I want to give kudos to your review via the framing, delivery, & style. I get that these budget MTB videos are hot right now and I understand why content creators are interested in making them but I can’t help but feel that buying a bike like this is a false economy. The need for upgrades is going to push the price to the point where it makes more sense to save a little and buy a DTC bike from Commencal, YT or Canyon. Sure, the cost of entry is somewhat higher but the parts spec is significantly better, too. There’s no way in hell I’d ride my goto trails with the sorts of brakes you’d find at the bottom of a cereal box.

If you're willing to spend around $1K there are a lot of good options for hardtails and full suspension MTBs. I watch big box bike videos for fun, but I think it's bad advice to recommend them to new MTBers over buying a good used bike. After all the money and hassle of upgrading a big box bike, you could have just bought a good used bike that's ready to go for the same money, minus having to search for and install better components.
