I bought the G9 three days ago and i was really struggling to set it up reading the manual is a poor second to actually being shown how to use the camera settings. I have watched a few videos made by Panasonic Ambassadors and i have to say that your video has helped me the most thank you for your extremely informative video please keep up the good work you are doing
@@naturesimagephotography It definitely is worth the effort! I have re-watched the vid so many times, and sent it to many friends who don't even have G9 but could benefit from the advice and ideas, so, thank you!
Here's a tip I'm not sure you know about, it doesn't work on my Olympus cameras but it does on my Panasonic GX7. In the menu there's an AF/AE lock HOLD setting, turning this on lets you lock focus using the AF/AE button on the back, pressing the button again will release focus allowing you to focus with the shutter button.
I knew my G9 had a constant preview feature, but I didn’t really understand what the point of it was. I have a feeling I will soon be wondering how I ever lived without it. Thanks for making this video!
I wish I had this years ago (all the LUMIX cameras work pretty much the same), as it is probably the most compact and well-reasoned strategy and explanation I have seen. I’ve found you can have your cake, and eat it too with back button focus: simply engage the AF/AE Lock as described and don’t change anything else. When you want BBF, press the AF/AE Lock button. The rest of the time I half press the shutter button.
The most helpful video I've come across for the G9 in a long time - will be using it to set up mine. Particularly liked the end section where you pulled it all together.

Great video Andrew. Very clear and easy to follow. I also have a G9 and use pretty much the same settings as you, other than a couple of things: I almost always use the custom white balance rather than AWB (which I find helpful because it often gives you a better and more consistent starting point for editing in post, particularly for video) and I shoot in Raw + JPG, rather than just RAW. Like you I generally use the RAW files but I find it helpful to use the JPGs in my workflow to identify which photos I want to edit, then I open the RAW to develop/edit. It's also handy to have the JPG versions in camera for occasional instant transfer for sharing. 🙂
... and for photo style if I know I'm going to be editing (which is 95% of the time) then I use Natural for photo and V-log L for video. If not going to edit then I use Standard.
Thanks for the tips. I briefly used RAW + way back after switching from film to digital but found I never used the JPEGs so it was just a waste of memory. That might change next time I go travelling as I might want to upload some photos to social media while on tour. Hi Andrew, reviewing your terrific videos another time. I had to RESET the camera (except wifi settings) yesterday. I had my camera all set how I like it and used it on a workshop in the Tetons National Park (Wyoming) then put it in its backpack which has been in my room since last October. Pulled it out to get going again and nothing was working (actually I was sitting on a dune in front of a beautiful lighthouse) and no focus -checked all the usual suspects and had my hubby check my settings. Was not on manual focus-but even manual was not working. Makes no sense. Came home days later and sat down to figure it out. Got a bit of focus happening but then it recorded black-if it recorded anything (still photos). That’s beyond my ability to debug. So I did the RESET in the menu system. Works fine now. But I did have to go through the menu system and fix all the settings back to where I want them. The default mode came back as med quality jpeg which would have made me cry if I had not noticed that on the display (there’s way too much info on that PIP screen-but at least its all there-just need to be careful to check it all out and not ‘see past it’ all the time. Your videos helped me make certain everything is as it should be. Thank you so much.
Hi Andrew, I just bought a second-hand G9 and I'm working my way through your helpful videos. It's a super camera - the only thing I am struggling with is the shutter button. Maybe I'm just heavy handed, but I've taken quite a few photos that I had no intention of taking! I might look at back button focus....
Thanks Randy. Just letting you know this is an older video. I updated things late last year with two videos that show new things I have learned and take into account some of the changes with firmware updates. The whole project was so long I broke it up into two parts: ua-cam.com/video/haHGthCMc6Y/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/qQqZG5fyZ2s/v-deo.html
have my G9 for about half a year now after having the GX9 which is an excellent street photography camera. This Video really helps with the basic settings and understanding the G9 functions.. Thanks....The G9 is an awesome camera with a lot of options that you have to learn and explore..
Andrew, thank you for a very well structured and clear explanation. I most enjoyed the topical summaries at the end. I learnt quite a lot. I expect to reuse this regularly. As a G7 user it is still very applicable, we will be moving to a G85 the video will still be very useful.
Well done, clear and succinct with good explanations of why you use each setting. With regard to back button focus, I used BBF extensively with my Nikon prior to switching to LUMIX. I found that I took much better photos without BBF when using the LUMIX. Thanks for your time and effort.
Thanks Andrew; a great guide, not only for beginners. I've had my G9 some time now but I definitely will look into using your recommended settings. Your summary at the end was very useful. Still looking forward to meeting you when Anna relaxes the 'social interaction' parameters and the Australia Zoo workshops can resume. Keep on keeping on. Mike in Oz
Andrew thank you thank you for this video i just got my G9 and my previous camera was an Olympus em5 mark1 from 2012... :) lovely little camera and the G9 is simply lightyears ahead... this video is a blessing thanks again.
Whilst I think the G9 is a fantastic camera, for myself, the worst aspect of the G9 is the manual. I have spent hours wading through it usually when some setting has been accidentally turned on and I search endlessly and desperately to turn it off. Your video gives some clues about where to find the settings. I can give one example: I wanted to turn off focus peaking when shooting autumnal landscapes. I expect to find it around focus settings, NOT display. Doing a search for peaking in the manual eventually shows how to set the options for peaking but how to turn it on and off is in a different section of the manual. Why? thanks for the comprehensive video. I have subscribed.
Great video. I’ve had my G9 for more than a year and a half now, and I absolutely love it! And, I’m always learning more about it thanks to very nice people like you for sharing your tips and knowledge. I know I greatly appreciate it. Thanks! (BTW, I’ve also added the GX9, primarily for street use, and when I don’t want to bother to switch lenses.)
Thanks for your informative Video👍🏻. I recommend to don’t shoot just RAW because the image quality in preview mode isn’t good and unsharp and you can‘t evaluate if your shot was a good one. It’s better to shoot both, RAW and jpeg👍🏻
Another advantage is also if you want to transfer some photo on the go to your smartphone for social media sharing on the go. Therefore I shoot RAW+JPEG with the JPEG set to lower quality 8MP mode. It's enough for that purpose and makes transfers to my phone faster! For editing all I use are the RAW files, of course. Win-win!
Great summary. Thank you. I bought my G9 4 months ago and spent alot of time trying to familiarize myself with its myriad features. Your video has provided a succint summary that at least now I'm able to understand. The G9 was my first digital camera beleive it or not. It replaced my old Nikon F3 HP which had been put away for years. But, I did save 4 very beautiful Nikkor AI lenses from the mid '80s and am amazed at how nice they are in obvious manual mode on the G9 with an adapter.
Many thanks Andrew for that succinct round up, very valuable to know these things as a starting point and as a way to help get to know your camera a little better if it's new, much appreciated.
Thanks so much...This video really helped me to finally remove all doubts about my decision to buy G9 once the lockdown is removed. These settings showed me I can definitely look upon G9 as well professional camera with its various capabilities for wildlife and landscape...my fav genres that I shoot.
Well done Andrew I have watched this video a few times now and have found it extremely useful thank you for your videos on the G9 they have been most infomitive.
Great video to combine all of your most common settings for your most common shooting scenarios! I have a G85 (would love a G9, but can't afford one currently!) and most of the settings are the same as you have them, but the G9 has a few advanced settings that the G85 does not -- and the AF seems a good bit better. I shoot JPEG+RAW and mostly I am shooting family photos and some landscape -- it's definitely easy to edit the JPEG files quickly and distribute to family and friends. For the more "important" photos (to me anyway!) I take the RAW and fully edit those. Thanks! Stay safe!
My GX9 is set up in a similar fashion except that I use back button focus. However you're tempting me to go for a G9 and sell off my DSLR gear but keep the GX9 (great camera) That GX9 is so handy to use relative to the clumsy DSLRs that I reckon it's big brother would be a dream Cheers for the video
Thanks Eltin. This is actually quite an old video. I made another set of 'round-up' videos late last year, following a couple of firmware updates and learning a few new tricks. If interested, you can check them here: ua-cam.com/video/haHGthCMc6Y/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/qQqZG5fyZ2s/v-deo.html
Hi Andrew. I have a G9 and use it a lot for aircraft/bird photos. The manual is...crap basically. Typically written by someone who understands the tech but can't get it across. I need to start shooting manually more to give me control of prop/rotor blur and high vibe situations like air to air/air to ground, and I am also after birds in flight. I could never quite work out why AFC never cut it until I watched this and you used the multi area. The 100_400 Leica is staggering combined with the stab on this kit so the AF was a bind being hit and miss. Constant preview and pre burst also look ideal. Cheers chap, the mist is clearing!!!
Keep an eye out Marisa...have you subscribed? I am working on a new version of this. After 18 months and two firmware updates I think it is time. I am working on a two-parter, hopefully out in the next week.
@@naturesimagephotography oh that is so exciting! I think I have watched ALL your videos on the G9 -- I needed a refresher on photography basics and your photography school is brilliant! On a different note, can you recommend a camera bag or backpack that is super comfortable/waterproof for longish hikes/travel, and not too heavy? thanks again!
Hi Marisa, thanks again. Sorry I don't think I can help with the camera bag...I have only used two bags in the last two years and I'm not sure either of them were waterproof...although I never would be game enough to put it to the test. Who knows, maybe there is a camera bag company out there listening to this conversation who might like to let me try one out?
Excellent review Andrew. I’m convinced the G9 is an fantastic camera. Just have justify a third camera. As just retired, that should not be to hard!! Cheers from LaTrobe Valley. 👍🏻🍷🇦🇺
Not sure what you mean but the answer might depend on your experience level. I shoot Manual so I have to consider exposure for every photo. If you are shooting auto the camera does most of the work for you. If shooting in AV the camera still does most of the work but you might need to look into exposure compensation.
The Olympus OM-D line also has one of the world's best image stabilizer systems. The statement you are quoting did not say the G9 has THE world's best.
Hi Andrew. I use quite a few of the same settings as you describe in the video, and I want to thank you for the constant preview one. Until this point, I'd always been using the front bottom button to turn it on - which is a pain to always do. I suppose I should have just looked deeper into the menu to realize I could have it always on :). One thing I'd like to point out to you is in regards to the picture mode you use. Since you are always shooting RAW, it makes absolutely no difference which one of the modes you choose. Those modes exist exclusively for in-camera processed JPG files. So, if you are shooting RAW+JPG or just JPG, then the picture mode you choose matters. If you're shooting only RAW, it makes zero difference. So, don't worry if you forget to change from "Standard" to "Portrait" mode.
Thanks for the tip. As I have explained to a few people individually (but forgot to explain properly in the video) I use Photo Style and White Balance changes sometimes if I plan to shoot some slow motion video as part of a photoshoot. I have no problem editing RAW files but I know nothing about editing colours and contrast on video. So if I change to portrait style it is more so that I can produce pieces of video that will better match the still photos. I believe that photo style etc. does have an effect on the outcome of a high-speed (slow motion) video clip. I'm glad you found something useful regarding constant preview. It's funny no matter how much we learn there is always something new to discover. This was one of the features they showed me in the shop, so when I got my new camera it was one of the first items I went looking for in the menu. Cheers.
@@naturesimagephotography yes, the photo styles will indeed have an impact on the video. Now I just need to get myself a long lens... for some reason the birds aren't too keen on me asking them to hold still while I get close enough for my 12-60 to be of any use :D
Great summary and will be a go to reference for people who ask "what settings". My preferences are very close to yours. My only disagreement is I leave IS on all the time. I have found no evidence including my own tests that it should be turned off. I think that's just one of those photography old wives tales that no longer has any relevance.
I proved it made a big difference with my other camera and lens...so not entirely an old wive's tale. But since I really only use the G9 hand-held I haven't put it to the test.
If you ever do satisfy yourself that it is true for the G9 I would love to see the evidence. A fact based summary would be a great reference point when there is nothing there at the moment other than heresay. I shall have a go myself sometime.
Hi Andrew, I have a LUMIX G9 camera and I have a Panasonic 100-300 lens, I see in your videos you use the Leica 100-400 telephoto lens. I just wondered what your opinion is about me upgrading to the Leica 100-400, is it worth the upgrade? I must admit when I have been to a Nature Reserve to get some nice pictures of the birds, I do wish the lens was a bit longer, I would get must closer pictures. Also want to say Thank you for the videos I have learnt a lot more about my camera then I ever did, been watching the videos each day, keep them up, they are really good, Thank you, Lee
Hi Lee, thanks for your comments and I am so glad you are enjoying the videos. Full disclosure: I have not owned or even borrowed the 100-300mm lens. I got the 100-400 when I bought the camera after my research satisfied me that it was the lens for me...and of course having bought the larger lens there was no temptation to want to get hold of the smaller one. So to best answer your question, here is the video that - out of all the ones I watched - is probably the one that helped me decide. ua-cam.com/video/0po7jYpMCMo/v-deo.html He says the 100-400mm is better but asks the question...is it $1000-worth better? And comes to the conclusion that yes, it is. I recommend you watch whole video and take note of the pros as well as the cons. It is a relatively heavy lens (although coming from a Sigma 150-500mm on my old DSLR it is actually much lighter than I was used to). It is also a bit stiff in the zoom mechanism. A lot of people make a big issue out of that - to be honest it never bothered me when I first got the camera and I feel it has become smoother with more use. I do recommend putting the lens on your camera and getting the feel of it before you decide. Don't just shop online without checking it out properly. But if you are happy with the weight and feel then I have no hesitation recommending the lens. The sharpness is great and the image stabilisation has to be seen to be believed. Hope this helps.
Have you tried the Animal AF? I think it works pretty well for BIF (as much or better than the other modes on the G9). I also find it very helpful to have the front buttons mapped to front/back focus pulling.
Hi Tim, yes I have tried it and have had some successes and some failures. Not convinced it is more effective than my method but giving it the benefit of the doubt I still give it a try from time to time.
Hi there, i already love your content, your confidence and knowledge, use to have more and different cameras, now i have non, so im planing to fully embrace the mft system, and build the lenses slow but steadily, i want to ask if you used the OMD E M1 mk II, since the budget for the body used from MPB would be @500 £, and that allows me to buy either the G9 mk I, or the Olympus omd em1 mk II, and im kinda thorn betwen them 2, can you shed some light pls?
Thanks for the video. I'm a little confused by your use of Photo Style when you exclusively shoot in Raw as I understood that this only applies to JPEGs?
Changing photo style is mainly for when I shoot little clips of video to go with my portrait photoshoots. I am fine editing my still photos but I know nothing about editing video. So as with white balance my change of photo style is more for the video than for the stills. I did explain this in the video re white balance, but perhaps I should have been a little clearer re photo style.
@@naturesimagephotography ah that makes sense. I didn't even know photo style affected video, I thought video settings were separate so that's good to know, thanks
@@DJColinCook To be honest I didn't know that either but I saw it done in other videos by people who know more about shooting video than I do, so I have used the method believing it to be true.
Correct. I put that in because at the time I was just starting to take an interest in VFR video, and the change in photo style could make a difference in video. But I realised (after I had finished the video for UA-cam) that I never really made that clear in my script. So yes you are quite correct and apologies for any confusion.
Great video ! Thank you! Question about image stabilisation : I understand it needs to be switched off when using a tripod. Is that true for both camera body and lens ? Thanks

Thanks Randy. Just letting you know this is an older video. I updated things late last year with two videos that show new things I have learned and take into account some of the changes with firmware updates. The whole project was so long I broke it up into two parts:
ua-cam.com/video/haHGthCMc6Y/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/qQqZG5fyZ2s/v-deo.html
@@naturesimagephotography thanks for the head up!!! 👍🏻😊
I've learned a lot in that video. Thanks.
I will try to play with the photo styles asap.
This helped me a lot, thanks for making this video!
have my G9 for about half a year now after having the GX9 which is an excellent street photography camera.
As a G7 user it is still very applicable, we will be moving to a G85 the video will still be very useful.
thank you for demystifying the G9 for me
That faint burp in the backgrournd at 16:11 😅..great tutorial
A great preview for someone like me who hopes to buy a G9 soon. Much thanks.

Andrew thank you thank you for this video i just got my G9 and my previous camera was an Olympus em5 mark1 from 2012... :) lovely little camera and the G9 is simply lightyears ahead... this video is a blessing thanks again.
Thanks for this very practical video. I use the settings for my G85. And switched from Aperture to Manual. Still practising…lots of fun🍀
Thank's again, you have made setting up my G9 a pleasure.
AWESOME Video! Thank you so much for sharing! I have learned so much about my G9 and photography thanks to you. You are much appreciated!
Awesome, thank you! Great to know when my work has value for others. Best of luck with all your photography adventures.
I’ve just traded up from a GX80 to a G9. This is a great video. I particularly appreciated your logical approach (e.g. setup and forget). Thank you.
Win-win!
I agree, it’s nice to have both. SD cards and memory are cheap. The jpeg quality is excellent.
Thanks Glen, I hope you are enjoying the new camera as much as I enjoy mine.
Thanks! Stay safe!
Just Brought the G9. Great video helped me loads just Subscribed Thank you
My GX9 is set up in a similar fashion except that I use back button focus.
However you're tempting me to go for a G9 and sell off my DSLR gear but keep the GX9 (great camera)
That GX9 is so handy to use relative to the clumsy DSLRs that I reckon it's big brother would be a dream
Cheers for the video
Thanks Eltin. This is actually quite an old video. I made another set of 'round-up' videos late last year, following a couple of firmware updates and learning a few new tricks. If interested, you can check them here:

This was super helpful since I just got my camera! Thank you!
Thank you for your recommandations/advises !
Well done, thank you.
Excellent......most helpful.
One of the best video out there thanks
Wow, thanks!
Thanks! That was great!! I’m curious about exposure and when I need to concern myself with that
Not sure what you mean but the answer might depend on your experience level. I shoot Manual so I have to consider exposure for every photo. If you are shooting auto the camera does most of the work for you. If shooting in AV the camera still does most of the work but you might need to look into exposure compensation.
Fantastic explanations, very helpful for me to simplify things on a very complex camera. Thank you.
Complexe cause you can do everthing with it !
Fantastic video, thanks
Very well explained, thanks for your time and sharing your knowledge
Thanks buddy , such an informative video .. i used to shoot only in auto mode 😶.. 🙏
Thanks that was a great Vlog with lots of useful information,
Great video Andrew, thanks for sharing with us!
Great video.
Just what I was looking for, thanks!
Host: "The G9 has one of the worlds best image stabilizer systems"
Olympus : "Am I dead to you?"
The Olympus OM-D line also has one of the world's best image stabilizer systems. The statement you are quoting did not say the G9 has THE world's best.
well.... yes?
Is Olympus not dead to everybody?
Great job! Thank you 🙏
Thanks for video ^^
Glad you found it helpful.
Thank you very interesting, informative!
Very helpful. Any advice on sunrises or sunsets in a nature area? Thank you!!
Quite helpful. Thanks for the video.
Big thanks, i recieve my G9 tomoroww
I use exactly the same settings!
Brilliant video. Your photos are superb too BTW.
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you sooo much!
Very helpful! Thank you
Great summary and will be a go to reference for people who ask "what settings".
I shall have a go myself sometime.
thank you! very useful.
So to best answer your question, here is the video that - out of all the ones I watched - is probably the one that helped me decide.
ua-cam.com/video/0po7jYpMCMo/v-deo.html
He says the 100-400mm is better but asks the question...is it $1000-worth better?
Thank you for this Andrew I will check the video out.
thanks for this great video!
Gr8 video , but i will watch it once i got G9 ..
Great vid mate :)
Hi thanks for this amazing video. I have a question, is there also no focus. Focus on the whole shot?
Does photo style affect raw images? If not, then it wouldn't matter if you forget to switch to Portrait or Standard, correct?
Thanks
If you turn it off at the lens I believe it will disable it for both lens and body.
Hello! I just received a lumix g9 camera. It comes with a 45-200 lens. Here is a supermoto competition. I would like to ask. How to set up the camera? What is your advice? Thanks for the answer in advance!! Sincerely Tamás.
Was it me or did someone burp at around 16:10... Hahahahaha. Loved the video though as I do own this camera
He probably ate or drank something moments before speaking on camera. A bit of indigestion.
