This was something I was overthinking for a project, your tutorial made me feel like an idiot, your solution is so simple. I was thinking of using subD to make the curtain!
Opacity map is usually quicker when you want a good effect that's not too close to the subject but if you were doing a zoomed in detail then a two sided material may be better. I wouldnt use subsurface with a thin material like fabric as its usually better for slightly denser transparent objects
