    I just wanted to thank you for this video and part 2. I was going to be in limp mode 4mph in 70 miles. I knew what needed to be done with the heater but getting out of that tamper mode "service exhaust" I wouldn't have known to test all three reductant heaters. I'm self-employed with not a lot of time and money to be dealing with this and you saved me on both much appreciated!!

    I love it!!.....non diesel mechanic repairs what stealership can`t or won`t. SMA 1- stealership 0. Love the logic you use in your diagnosis Dr. O. Once again I caught this vid in a YT SMA binge watch. If you post it, I will watch...even if I`m seeing it 4 years later. Good job. This is exactly why your phone and door dinger rings alot. No fuss...no muss. You are true to your customers and their vehicles. God Bless you and your family. One question....Why can`t Mitchell get their diagrams right? seems to be a trend with them.....

    I can't wait to see part two. This one touches a nerve with regards to dealer service. I've seen this type of situation more than once. Dealers HATE doing warranty work because the factory doesn't pay nearly what a customer has to pay for the repair.

    I stopped in at your shop about a month ago and talked to you and Ivan. I had the very same failure on my 2011 F350 and after watching some of your video's I got myself a shop manual, and swapped the part myself. Based on the diagram it looks like the GM parts is really close to what Ford uses. Job went great, I took my time and save myself about $1000 over going to the dealer. Thanks for doing these amazing video's!

    Love your needle trick. I did that in 1984 on my 1983 F150! My Dad had a really small travel trailer he needed to take to a dealer. I didn't have a wiring harness on my truck. So I pulled my taillights and stuck some straight pins through the wires. I used some alligator clips and a bunch of electrical tape and hooked up the lights. The trailer didn't have brakes and we just needed to go about 8 miles. Dropped the trailer off, took out my taillights, removed the pins and wrapped the wires in some electrical tape. My Dad didn't think it would work. Then he thought I was nuts. Then he congratulated me on improvising! We had a short time line to get it there before I had to get to work. :-)

    Oh man. Besides all the little stuff that was nickel and dimeing me to death with the 2005 GMC 2500HD Duramax, the service advisor just pissed me off. So, out went the GMC and in with the RAM. I'm lucky, my RAM dealer tech is good. Had a 7:15 appointment today to change the oil, lube the truck, apply all the software recall updates, and inspect the front track bar mount welds. Got it back in 3 hours and it was even washed. Serviced and done right.

    The dealership I am at sees this same exact issue, especially when the temperatures get cold and that heater has to work overtime. Usually you have to replace the whole internal reservoir which has the heater inside as you found out, we stock at least 3 of them because of this.
    Make sure you top off the DEF tank with DEF fluid and perform a fluid level reset too!

    As for the comment that a fellow Canadian viewer made regarding their experience with Canadian Dealerships seemingly providing a higher standard of service than our American cousins to the south appear to be experiencing , I would humbly have to disagree, I am proudly Canadian....... However previous experiences and currently owning two, 2015's, my dealership visits have always been at the very least, less than stellar, and in most of those situations I would have preferred to have been strapped in a dentist chair having multiple root canals, as with that, at least there is some light at the end of the tunnel.
    As for the customer survey mentioned, oh my goodness, if you have the guts to fill it out honestly, and again in my experience, the punishment handed out to you the customer, is severe!
    All I can say is what a smart and fortunate customer Eric O has, he knew where to take his vehicle to actually get it fixed and done properly!

    Great video.
    Back to customer complaint, the CEL/DEF light on and limited to 55 mph. Following the code found a problem, this may fix CEL/DEF, but will that fix the limited to 55mph complaint?
    Does the computer put the system in default mode due to a DEF heater?
    This entire emissions crap on these diesels is just plain silly. The ambulance company I work for had a few Duramax 6.6l Ambulances and We would idle them all day due to being posted in different coverage areas. When you actually needed the trucks for emergency calls they would sometimes go into regen mode and limit the thing to like 35 mph and blow smoke like a coal train. Pretty tough driving to a medical emergency at 35 mph.
    One day I pulled out of a parking lot after idling for about 8 hours. There was a "happy" looking guy behind us in a very nice light colored convertible with the top down that pulled up behind us. When I accelerated the biggest cloud of black smoke I have EVER seen filled this guys car completely up with smoke. He had to pull over to the side of the road, I felt really bad.

    Don't feel like the lone stranger. I've had similar experiences with a Chevy, Ford, Nissan and Toyota dealership repair shops. In each of the four cases (after giving the dealer the first shot), I took my vehicles to a private shop that had the problems fixed in one day! In the case of the Nissan problem (electrical) an automotive electrical repair shop repaired it in under an hour for $20!

    So easy to just suggest to buy another truck , thats a dealership for you , we sell Diesel Trucks , but we don't service them due to no Diesel Mechanics , wonderful , gives you confidence when buying a New vehicle . Sell the guy new truck and send that one to auction for some poor sap get stuck with a truck that has issues , that's why they call they Stealer ships . Good on you to investigate and do diagnosis to get it repaired and keep your customer happy .

    So the dealer says you shouldn't be fixing it because it's under warranty, but they don't want to/can't fix it under warranty? Wow.

    • @Mikeaaron777
      @Mikeaaron777 4 роки тому

      They make money on the repairs that warranty doesn't cover. An example is the 3 year or 36,000 mile type warranty.

    2011 and the frame coating is peeling and plenty of rust already. Got to love GM rust protection.

    • @BobPegram
      @BobPegram 6 років тому

      Is it powder coating? Once it's been penetrated, it's NDG. Collects water behind it and the remaining coating is a great container of water. The Steel rusts away fast. That's the same reason a lot of rust protector just accelerates the rot.

    • @jasonhumphrey8891

      They are way up north so no matter what brand vehicle you drive up there, if it is a year round daily drive it is gonna rust really bad after just a couple of years, if you live up north i recommend if you are gonna buy a nice car or truck then you need to go ahead and keep your old car or buy a reliable beater car and drive the beater in the winter time and keep your nice car/truck in the garage until spring, it sucks not bein able to drive your new car but if you want your car to stay nice and last a long time thats the only thing you can do

    Kool video, you are a true honest mechanic, didn't matter if you didn't know what you were dealing with, you found the problem. Where is your garage located, if your close I want to bring my truck to you. Dealership gives run around keep telling me nox sensors, needs regen, or I just need to drive it long distances to let exhaust clean itself out,. Thank you for showing complete makeup of the def tank. Questions, where are you located and how was the truck running after your work?

    Can't believe just how rusty these things get. That truck's like 4 years old and already all crusty down there! Anyway, my weak point is definitely sensor diagnostics and your videos on the subject are great. On another note, avoid Audi Q7's at all cost! Did the oil pan gasket on that....from the odd VW tools, to the impossible oil pan removal because of bad engineering -- ironically! -- this thing seriously left me traumatized.

    Its nice to see when you take your Diesel expensive truck to the dealership to fix they not only do not have a mechanic on hand but try to sell you a new one. Awesome. These dealership guys are fantastically full of it.

    Typical stealership BS. The first shop I worked at was a local Toyota dealer, what a joke that place was. My brother in laws wife bought a Subaru Crosstrek a few years ago, she recently got a coupon in the mail from them for a 25K service for the low price of $399!?!?! She called me up because she thought that seemed pretty high, I agreed and told her that most of the interval services are just an oil change, tire rotation and inspection however there might be some adjustment or service that making the price so high. I check out what the "official subaru" 25K service involves and its nothing more than an oil change, tire rotation and inspection. For $400! Of course I did it for her for less then $100 with a new air filter.
