I realize the earth is falling towards the sun and the earth has enough sideways momentum to keep it from falling into the sun. But isn't there trace atoms (in the void of space) that slows earth down due to resistance, which would cause the earth to, eventually, crash into the sun?
Jameel - I have often wondered that same thing. Not sure if that is the case - clearly we are still here so if there is space debris that is slowing us down, then it will take a very long time.
If the sun had infinite lifespan, and the earth had an infinite lifespan and they both dont crash into eachother , then would Einstein be incorrect? As space isn't being bent then, since if its being bent, it would eventually collide
Aside from the bending of space already having been proven, think of this video and see how the earth is falling in a circle once a year. Space is certainly being bent. Gravity is what causes the bending of space(time). On a separate note, Einstein will for sure be proven wrong one day, since his theory of relativity does not hold up with Quantum Mechanics, at the microscopic level, so somewhere there is a gap that needs filling/adjusting.
I had always wondered why it did not crash into the 🌞. You answered it with an explanation but now am hearing that slowly the moon is moving away from the Earth too? How is it so ? Is the Earth and other Planets losing their Gravity?
Great understandable theory, and use of known physics to achieve this. If we use any of the 3 laws of motion, what created this amount of force to accelerate any planet to achieve this equilibrium to constantly oppose the force of gravity of the sun? And how is conservation of " it's energy cannot be created nor destroyed"

As whenever we implant satellite we will take care of giving it a velocity so becoz of which it get fixed in a certain orbit.
Finally got the answer that makes sense. Could you also explain whether this phenomenon is what's called centrifugal force? Because I've read that the centrifugal force prevents the earth from getting swallowed by the sun.
Sir, as there is nothing to slows down the moon... Do you think we can also say symmetrically the net forces will be cancel out as moon is following a sort of circular path.
Great video!! Had a rough idea but your explanation allowed me to fully understand it. Love that see through board you were using as well, much prefer it to the thing khan academy uses.
From the Big Bang. The Earth was formed from much smaller pieces of rock which were already moving fast due to the energy emitted from the BB.Please google your question ,I'm sure you'll find a more complex answer.
Doesn't explain my question at all. Please clear my confusion. Q : Why planets doesn't fall into sun ? A: planet is moving too fast Q: why it doesn't get free from gravity of sun and gets free in Cosmos? A: sun gravity is too strong. It doesn't allow escape. Ok. But my question is why or how it's(planet) moving in first place ?? To move an object requires energy. . Why is planet moving so fast, and your answer is ,if it slows it will fall into sun. . where is energy coming from ,for this sustainable system ?? Where are planets getting energy from to continue moving so fast?? Sun attracts and bends path while planet is moving ? But something , some energy source has to move the planet or satellite or object in first place. Where is that energy coming from in this sustainable system ????
The energy which caused the Earth to move is,as I said in my previous reply, from the Big Bang explosion. When it orbits, Sun's gravity is "consumed" by keeping the planet from "getting away" ,rather than by attracting it. In the Universe there is no atmosphere which causes things to slow down like here on Earth. If you were in Space and threw a ball, it will not stop (unless it gets close to a massive object like a planet, star etc.).Likewise,if you were the Big Bang and threw Earth, it will not stop, it will eventually get into the orbit of Sun. Sun's gravity is used so Earth stays on its orbit and not travel further and is "consumed" that way.The Sun cannot therefore bring the Earth closer to itself unless its gravity force increses.
Hi John, can you explain the area of outer space and the pressure in thats space. Can you also explain the area of earth's atmosphere and it's pressure in conjunction and connection to space. Thanks.
Is light mass? I keep coming back with the same answer heat, and keep being attracted to cold and in that there's a magnetic spectrum. I think all these little things add up and I don't think the fabric does
Does gravity itself not slow things down? Like is the earths orbit getting ever so slightly closer to the sun, or is it at a set distance always (at a given point in orbit)?
Sir it is possible in case of satellites But by kepler's law of planetry motion orbit of planets to the sun is eliptical so no centre force is being act
It's kind of scary and weird to think of Earth (like any other orbiting object in our solar system) as continually *falling* towards the sun but also continually missing it thankfully lol
Yes, It's weird, because if there is a gravity acceleration towards the earth, it should fall to earth only day, because gravity pulling it in every seconds.
@@cashisreal7566 I believe mercury solves the problem of being closer to the sun than earth by orbiting it *FASTER* than earth does hence its shorter orbital period or "year" of 88 days compared to earth's 365 days.

same idea. But since satellites are close to the earth there is some atmosphere there (gas) and this slows the satellites down which is why occasionally the thrusters have to be fired.
@@JonBergmann1 , first of all thank you for your explanation. I have had stupid anxiety almost every night for years and had wondered if earth will ever just throw itself out of orbit and slightly change its direction into the sun. And this video has helped a lot with that anxiety. But if you don’t mind me asking, why do we have our satellites still in the atmosphere of the earth since it would slow it down and pull more towards earth? And if that’s the case then does the sun have an atmosphere that actually reaches Earth?
Sir, I have a question. Why doesn't the velocity (speed) of a satellite changes when it's falling into the earth's centre.....umm I mean yeah it's orbiting the sun but why it's constant speed? Why the gravity isn't effecting it's speed?
newtons 1st law - once an object is in motion it stays in motion. so once the planets are in motion they stay in motion. The only force acting on them is the gravity of the sun. Since they are "flying" through space which is a vacuum, they dont slow down.
If big bang is real and it started from I point then why did it not became a black hole large mass small size and also as matter can nither be created nor be destroyed then it all had to come from one point
Could the Earth body's trajectory shift to a dangerous degree so that eventually it would go too far or too close to the Sun and thus, be either engulfed by the Star or our life exterminated (too cold or hot)? I have in mind an event of a magnitude capable of moving the Planet.
This video is awesome. I watched another video explaning gravity and they threw marbles around a heavy object in the middle and naturally it crashed into each other and my stupid self came up with this question but i realized earth velocity doesnt end like a marble cuz theres no air
i remember that one experiment where one ball orbiting another ball then crashes to the center, search for this vid and i remember that space doesn't have resistance like the fabric that is used just like what this vid says, nice.
Isn’t it that the planets are formed at the equilibrium point such that the centrifugal forces matches the gravitational force? Of either one were out of whack, say the gravitational force weaker, planets would indeed flying away. No?
Thumbs up. I found my answer. After many videos . But I have an other question how and when this velocity was picked by earth and planets. How the planets got this balance
Why earth or other planets do not stop orbiting? When we make a model of space time curve, the objects orbit around the heavier objects which is sun, so why they don’t stop orbiting at the end of finishing their orbit, I have heard that of everything starts, so they have to stop sometime in their way. But planets don’t stop orbiting forever.
This is a great explanation. But how is this reconciled by Albert Einstein theory of space time being indented and objects falling to larger bodies. Does space time and Newton's theory's allign?
They both agreed that objects are attracted to other more massive objects. They only had a different view on what makes these objects get attracted to one another.Newton-Gravity as a force; Einstein-curvature of space-time. So,both Einstein's and Newton's points of view can be applied here.
So out there in space since we don't have any air but each of planets have their own gravitation force like Jupiter which stops most of the asteroid to hit the eart because of its gravitation pull....so my question still the same sun has a larger mass so has larger gravitation pull so why isn't it pulling any other planets. Just like Jupiter binding the asteroid to move around its belt
If the gravitational pull of the sun is just strong enough to hold the earth in its orbit, never letting it drift away and never pulling it closer and eventually crashes into it. Then what about the other planets that are closer and farther away from it. How does gravity work for them. Basically the same way I'm guessing but shouldn't the gravity be stronger for nearer planets and weaker for farther planets.
Planets that are closer have more velocity, so they orbit the Sun faster, while planets that are farther orbit the Sun slower. There has to be an equilibrium point I guess where the velocity is just right where if it was slower the planet would eventually fall into the Sun, or if it was faster it would eventually drift away and leave the solar system.
I recently had the thought "why doesn't everything fall into a black hole? Then I thought - if you replaced the sun with a black hole that had an equal mass - then all the planets must then stay in orbit rather than be eaten by the black hole for the same reason we dont fall into the sun. While I understood that, I didn't necessarily know WHY. I figured it had to do with being trapped at a particular place as it falls towards the sun.
Can you plz explain from the perspective of Einstein General Theory of Relativity...I know Moon follow a Geodesic in an Inertial motion due to Curved SpaceTime but Why Doesn't Moon Fall into the Earth's surface?(plz don't give answer from Newton perspective)
Earth's speed V is just a fixed speed, not an acceleration, while the Sun's gravity is an acceleration (G). I thought that the Earth is falling into the Sun, but it's taking billion years to do so (or the opposite) because of the almost perfect balance between V and G. I would like an answer to this in simple terms if possible
Then how did earth get it's velocity? Like was it just moving into vaccum and suddenly sun's gravity attracted sun and stopped it's straight trajectory?
Could it be that the planets magnetic fields keeping the planets in their orbit. So the mass of the sun or planets pulls in moons and planets to them but the sun's and planets magnetic fields radiating out keep them in their orbit. Is it not odd that Venus and Mars with no magnetic fields have no moons orbiting them. Just my amateur theory. Would love to see proper mathematical model to see if true.
The satelites have engines that turn on in order to adjust the velocity to keep in orbit. how does the earth "correct" its speed in order to keep around the sun? if the explanation that there is no atmosphere to make it slow down, then the satelites wouldnt need to corret their speed too...what im missing?
That is a really great question. Though I am not 100% certain - I would say that the satellites are facing at least some atmosphere - so over time they slow down - thus the need for the engines. In the case of the earth, it doesn't have to fight a solar atmosphere so it keeps on orbiting.
Great explanation! thanks. best bit for me though... "Spiral thing, errrm, im not sure we completely understand it all actually..... no one was there..."
I find it a bit troubling that we simply gloss over the fact that we don’t understand the Big Bang as you do at 5:20 which caused all this, wouldn’t that be the most important event to make sense of before coming up with all these theories about space time. In other words the only way for this theory to be correct is to believe that all planets and respectively their moons around their planets were launched into orbit at such tremendous velocity so that they don’t fall into their respective planets? And this supposed event of such great force that set our solar system in place and probably all solar systems just happened by accident with no intention? The odds of this happening are I imagine something like 0.000000000001% and we are meant to accept that this is what happened? Seems like a huge leap of faith… Wouldn’t a much more plausible explanation be that some force with intention kicked these planets and moons into orbit so to speak, like a soccer player kicking a soccer ball, with very powerful force and with intention? Wouldn’t the probability of that be much higher than this random accident 0.000000000000001% chance theory?
So if the matter in the planets coalesced, was there a change in velocity to establish the orbit? Also why then do satellites eventually fall to the earth?
Satellites are on the outskirts of the earth's atmosphere so the air resistance slowly slows them down and eventually the spiral down and crash into the earth. But the sun's atmosphere does not at all interfere with the Earth (nor any other planet) becuase it is far away. Thanks for the great question.
With everything moving in space due to their respective initial velocities and the expansion of spacetime, one would think the actual physics equations of planetary motion are much more complicated. Is this true?
@JonBergmann1 Cool. Thanks for the explanation...we don't really need more than F = GMm/r^2 to calculate planetary rotation. Movement of spacetime can ve ignored.
They are captured in the gravitational pull of the earth. They don't orbit because they make a more direct hit in their trajectory. Note that many do orbit and never reach the earth. It is all about the direction when they encounter the gravitational pull of the earth.

Great explanation! thanks. best bit for me though...
"Spiral thing, errrm, im not sure we completely understand it all actually..... no one was there..."
competition for aethiests to argue .-.
can we recreate this in a vaccume back in a lab ?
No. This is because in the lab you would be in the earth and in its gravitational field.
May be, if your lab is in an high earth orbit.
Seems like a huge leap of faith…
Wouldn’t a much more plausible explanation be that some force with intention kicked these planets and moons into orbit so to speak, like a soccer player kicking a soccer ball, with very powerful force and with intention? Wouldn’t the probability of that be much higher than this random accident 0.000000000000001% chance theory?
Sir but how did planet acquire such a velocity
Good question

@@sreesankar07 pls read about origin of solar system. That will give an idea.
But gravity is not a force ! It is curvature of spacetime so how explain it now given Einstein?
Is this true?
not really. But how they interact with many different bodies is - but the equations are relatively simple
@JonBergmann1 Cool. Thanks for the explanation...we don't really need more than F = GMm/r^2 to calculate planetary rotation. Movement of spacetime can ve ignored.
so... why meteors colapse? they should orbit like everything do
how planets where placed in them orbits ?
They are captured in the gravitational pull of the earth. They don't orbit because they make a more direct hit in their trajectory. Note that many do orbit and never reach the earth. It is all about the direction when they encounter the gravitational pull of the earth.
