  • The law of gravity says all things are attracted to each other, yet the earth does not crash into the Sun. Why? Learn the basics of how planets orbit the sun and why they don't crash into each other in this informative video.
This is part 3 in a five-episode series that is brought to you by award-winning teacher Jon Bergmann He creates these videos for his high school science students.

I realize the earth is falling towards the sun and the earth has enough sideways momentum to keep it from falling into the sun. But isn't there trace atoms (in the void of space) that slows earth down due to resistance, which would cause the earth to, eventually, crash into the sun?

Aside from the bending of space already having been proven, think of this video and see how the earth is falling in a circle once a year. Space is certainly being bent. Gravity is what causes the bending of space(time).
On a separate note, Einstein will for sure be proven wrong one day, since his theory of relativity does not hold up with Quantum Mechanics, at the microscopic level, so somewhere there is a gap that needs filling/adjusting.

Satellites are on the outskirts of the earth's atmosphere so the air resistance slowly slows them down and eventually the spiral down and crash into the earth. When we make a model of space time curve, the objects orbit around the heavier objects which is sun, so why they don’t stop orbiting at the end of finishing their orbit, I have heard that of everything starts, so they have to stop sometime in their way. If the gravitational pull of the sun is just strong enough to hold the earth in its orbit, never letting it drift away and never pulling it closer and eventually crashes into it. Then what about the other planets that are closer and farther away from it. How does gravity work for them. Basically the same way I'm guessing but shouldn't the gravity be stronger for nearer planets and weaker for farther planets.

Planets that are closer have more velocity, so they orbit the Sun faster, while planets that are farther orbit the Sun slower. Doesn't explain my question at all. Please clear my confusion.
      Q : Why planets doesn't fall into sun ?
A: planet is moving too fast
Q: why it doesn't get free from gravity of sun and gets free in Cosmos?
A: sun gravity is too strong. It doesn't allow escape.
Ok. But my question is why or how it's(planet) moving in first place ?? To move an object requires energy. . Why is planet moving so fast, and your answer is ,if it slows it will fall into sun. . where is energy coming from ,for this sustainable system ?? Where are planets getting energy from to continue moving so fast?? Sun attracts and bends path while planet is moving ? But something , some energy source has to move the planet or satellite or object in first place. Where is that energy coming from in this sustainable system ????

The energy which caused the Earth to move is,as I said in my previous reply, from the Big Bang explosion. When it orbits, Sun's gravity is "consumed" by keeping the planet from "getting away" ,rather than by attracting it. In the Universe there is no atmosphere which causes things to slow down like here on Earth. If you were in Space and threw a ball, it will not stop (unless it gets close to a massive object like a planet, star etc.).Likewise,if you were the Big Bang and threw Earth, it will not stop, it will eventually get into the orbit of Sun. Sun's gravity is used so Earth stays on its orbit and not travel further and is "consumed" that way.The Sun cannot therefore bring the Earth closer to itself unless its gravity force increses.

They are captured in the gravitational pull of the earth. They don't orbit because they make a more direct hit in their trajectory. Note that many do orbit and never reach the earth. It is all about the direction when they encounter the gravitational pull of the earth.

With everything moving in space due to their respective initial velocities and the expansion of spacetime, one would think the actual physics equations of planetary motion are much more complicated. Is this true?

    • @JonBergmann1
      @JonBergmann1  Рік тому

not really. But how they interact with many different bodies is - but the equations are relatively simple

    • @mikeboon279

@JonBergmann1 Cool. Thanks for the explanation...we don't really need more than F = GMm/r^2 to calculate planetary rotation. Movement of spacetime can ve ignored.

newtons 1st law - once an object is in motion it stays in motion. so once the planets are in motion they stay in motion. The only force acting on them is the gravity of the sun. Since they are "flying" through space which is a vacuum, they dont slow down.

Earth's speed V is just a fixed speed, not an acceleration, while the Sun's gravity is an acceleration (G). I thought that the Earth is falling into the Sun, but it's taking billion years to do so (or the opposite) because of the almost perfect balance between V and G. I would like an answer to this in simple terms if possible

i watched like 4 videos on this topic and i feel like they are all missing a point that wasn't explained, in all of the examples the objects being thrown had a speed towards the earth, and than you say based on that logic if an object is fast enough there is basicly no speed towards the earth?
something is not making sence here, and i don't see how air and atmosphere change the fact that there is a speed vector towards the earth, i get that air might lower the speed, but it doesn't CANCEL it, which is a huge differance, anyway if anyone can answer that i'd like to hear, or maybe i'll just ask my friend who studies physics because i feel like i'm missing something.

Gravity is always attractive - an object is moving down (straight down to the earth based only on gravity) -- but if it also has a velocity tangential to the earth then it is falling in an arc and if there is no air resistance (no atmosphere) then it is ever falling and never reaching the earth -- make sense?
