I was in Japan around 2 weeks ago and got myself a pair of hori split pad compact in Midnight Blue! I just found out that the Midnight Blue is only released in Japan and im loving the colour!
I'm already sold on it. The textured analog sticks and the overall look of it won me over. I'm going with the Light Gray & Yellow version because I think it has kind of a retro look (like something out of the late '70s or early '80s), but I think the "Apricot" one looks great too. Other than the back buttons and the turbo functionality, the Split Pad Compact looks to me like something Nintendo should have come up with years ago as a Joy-Con alternative. Something like this directly from Nintendo with wireless, HD Rumble, and gyro would undoubtedly have sold extremely well. The only reason I can think of for why they chose not to make their own Joy-Con alternative is that maybe they didn't want to risk undermining the original Joy-Cons in the eyes of the consumer. Oh well. Their loss is Hori's gain. And while I know there are "better" alternatives out there with wireless, rumble, and gyro, I would always recommend Hori's Split Pad products over those because they're officially licensed. Quality in many unlicensed products can be a crapshoot, but licensed is generally pretty reliable.
Really I’m trying to work out the value of the license myself because the Nyxi/Binbok seem to be better in every aspect except for me just the shape of the controller. I’m really digging my compact but the dead zone is slightly off putting so like you can move the stick a bit before your character moves. The Binbok and JoyCon do it too but it’s less noticeable. However, after using these compact for a week, I don’t notice it anymore. Might depend on the game though. It felt awkward playing Monster Hunter Stories 2. Like I was walking on ice or something BUT I’ve had no problems with THPS which I think is saying something. Actually maybe that’s because your stick is almost always fully extended lol. But I haven’t noticed with ACNH or Disney DLV either. I really just love the vibe and feeling of these. And they look so cool I could eat em! Have you seen the Pokémon Gengar ones? I’ll def be doing a video on them soon I think they just look so amazing and you’re spot on with the retro off white!!! Good ol Compaq computer right there!!
Yes sir! Look at the Gengar Pokémon ones oh my GOD can’t wait to review them next month. Still testing them out. I still think they’re my fave. One thing that disappointed me is the stick dead zone. Didn’t realize there was a term for it but where I thought bigger stick meant more precise movement, it actually doesn’t register the stick until you’ve tilted it quite a ways. This can result in a slippery butter type feel. Looks like regular JoyCon have it too now that I compare. But maybe not as bad since the sticks are so short. Now I gotta test it against the Pro Controller. Maybe I’ll do a video on it lol.
I was actually going to buy those specifically for red dead! I ended up getting myself some over had joy cons, but a part of me wonders what the splitpad compact is like
I have the gengar split compact and the Nyxi Hyperion cons. Both I like them equally. Both have their pros and cons. When it comes to comfort, the Nyxi is a little bit better. I think the triggers on the compact are way better than the Nyxi. I love that the compacts do not need batteries verse to the Nyxi do. I switch back and forward depending on how I’m playing. I highly recommend the compacts if you are on the fence of buying them. They are worth it. Specially if your hands alway cramp up, the compacts will help that.
I haven’t had any issues with it but some have! Depends on how often you play handheld I suppose. If I had more time, I would do a cool comparison video!!! But sadly idk if I ever would have time for an extra video like that I’m sorry!!!
I clicked on the video to see a better color comparison of the Hori split pad compact. I prefer Dr. Pepper color over the Cooked Egg color. Thanks for the video!
I own all of which you featured and I use the Nyxi the most. It is the best all around controller and can of course be used for any game in docked or handheld. You cant beat it for the money. Now if Im being game specific the compact for FPS is my absolute go to otherwise I dont find any of them to be better than the Nyxi.
Hey glad you know what you like. What would you say makes Hori better for FPS? I actually prefer the Hori except stuck dead zones really bug me so idk that I would use them when needing to be precise
@Switch Unboxing there is something to the shape, shoulder buttond and analog sticks that make playing something like Doom 1 so perfect with the compact. Hard to describe but if you play Doom 1 with all of the handheld options you'd be surprised how even the pro falls short here and it really only applies to FPS games.
How are the nyxi Athena. I’ve been wanting to get them but afraid cause say they have dead zones. I have a nyxi pro and it doesn’t work for monster hunter. You still recommend the nyxi Athena? @KLX boy
I was looking at the nyxi Hyperion and binbok slim but with all the negative reviews on QC issues and only a 30 day warranty it seemed too much of a joycon lottery system. They look awesome if you get a good set though.
Thanks dude! Do you agree with what was said? I’ve been using these daily now and they’re so natural I forget they’re there! Only drawback is I don’t have a JoyCon charger so now when I need JoyCon they won’t be juiced up. But lately I’ve been using pro controller anyway
How does the speckled grip feel texture-wise compared to the split pad pro? I found the pro extremely rough and irritating to use, I could not stand it. Does the speckled feel like its going to scrape off, catch on anything, rough or uncomfortable? Anything that you could best compare it to? Same for the sticks, they look like they have a texturing in the middle.
Yeah like I said the sticks are very similar just has the texture in the middle so a little better grip. I just don’t love the dead zone. Split Pad Pro is similar. So, when you move the tick, there’s an amount of distance you have to travel before it registers the movement. Can result in a bit of an icy slipper feeling IMO. But most people don’t seem to notice or care. It really depends on the game. For example playing THPS I don’t notice because I’m always on the outer edge of the stick. Same with games where you’re constantly walking etc but if you need to move the stick from one end to the other real quick like left to right you might notice. As far as texture it’s great. It’s really subtle but it works. I don’t see how it could snag on anything.
@@dem0ns1ayerjakeplays30 Oh yeah SL and SR. That’s because you can’t use these wirelessly as they don’t have batteries. And they’re using the same side rail piece as the JoyCon. So instead of buttons there and instead of the syncing button they just have plastic covers.
I haven’t experienced it but I think someone else has. They def don’t have hall effect sticks so I don’t see why they couldn’t. There’s a bit of a dead zone though if you ask me and that’s what I’m not a big fan of. But that’s not an issue with most games.
@switch unboxing GREAT VIDEO, immediately subscribed to your channel. I have a question, so what is the best choice for D-pad ? I like playing fighting games and I find the Hori split pad pro D-pad non so good. Is the compact one better? Or the nixi one ?
Thank you! NYXI/Binbok definitely has the mobility for those quick movements it seems. The 8BitDo is also great because it’s just like a retro dpad back when games relied on the dpad.
I have a Hori D-Pad for handheld mode and the 8bit duo SNES style pro controller for docked mode. Gotta say, this is tempting but it might not fit in my carrying bag
Yes that is for supporting the weight of the system when it's setting down on a table with the Split Pad connected. Without it, the weight of the system will cause bending at the slide rails that the Split Pad connect to the Switch with. This results in damage and loosening those rails. Good design to have in place since my Switch primarily sits on my table when not in use!
Might depend on the game. I feel like JoyCon are more accurate in a way because the compacts have a bigger dead zone. Would be nice if they had rumble though!

@@riddoabdul That’s just gonna come down to personal opinion my friend! All I can do is explain to you the differences. Then what you like best is all up to you! Depends on what you’re looking for. 😊
I'm trying to decide which one, thanks for the comparisons! I love the look of the Compacts way more - I like the Pikachu and Mimikyu one, but as someone that liked the original Xbox Duke controller I suspect the Pro will be more comfortable for me.
How do the ABXY buttons feel on the compact compared to the split pro? Are they about the same? I’m specifically wondering about which one has, in your opinion, the softer click. I’m looking for the more silent option if that makes sense.
The Compact are better. The buttons are smaller, flatter, quieter, not so loose and rattly, and they’re closer together. Also yes the press down is softer and travels less. That said there’s a little bit less of a click in when it’s pressed. Hasn’t been an issue.
@@switchunboxing Thank you! That answers my question. I was looking for joycon replacements that would allow my wife to still fall asleep while I finished up playing XD She hates the clicky buttons
I like mechanical and soft I just hate stiff buttons Like I have the mobapad Chitu HD for my switch OLED and I love the mechanical buttons on it it’s faster to press compared to the stiff joycons buttons And the Hori splitpad compacts I love too it’s fast to press the buttons
Honestly give me rubber contacts over tact switches any day when you can fit them in. I wouldn't call them mushy myself but soft and tactile which is nicer to press in than the tact switches on the joycons. Also that analog stick and cap? Yeah that's legitimately great for third party, I even like the size, resistance and amount of travel. I'm sure they're alps and will crap out after a year or maybe two unless you get blessed by the gods and get an alps joystick that actually does last a long while, But regardless of things that even plague first party controllers from all companies, they just feel good.
@@switchunboxingMine has only the slightest bit of a deadzone and honestly I think I'd rather have that then what my two sets of joycons do have, either sticks that drift off or sluggish response. Hall effect joysticks can't come fast enough to first party controllers.
I first got the Hori Split Pad Pros, but after being frustrated with the lack of motion controls in games like BotW and Borderlands 2, I got the MobaPad M6. The M6 had the best ergonomics, mechanical buttons and great sticks, but the back buttons wasn’t a simple map, it had a bizarre auto function that if you press it more than once, it goes into turbo mode. So it made it unusable. (And my daughter broke it) So now I use the Nyxi. Even though my perfect controller would have M6’s buttons, sticks and shape, and the Hori’s ease of use, especially the mapping button being a one click solution, I use the Nyxi, which doesn’t excel at anything but does everything well enough. I only wish the face buttons felt a little more quality.
I currently use the Skull n Co Neo Grip. I would switch to the Hori Split Compact in a heartbeat IF they had gyro controls... I just can't give those up for BOTW and Splatoon 3
I might have to finally check em out. They have a Pokémon Scarlet/Violet coming out. How’s the grip and the ergonomics on em? Also I wonder if Hori ever makes a controller with gyro and rumble 🤔
@@switchunboxing If you don't hate the joycon buttons and sticks and stuff I highly recommend the neo grip. I like that it comes with 3 sizes so you can find what works best. I've ended up using the smallest one the most because it still fits in many cases but adds a little grip.
I really like my hori split pad pro, however I have my dock hung on the wall in a mount, and I've found that the huge lip on the front of the pro makes me unable to just slide my switch in and I have to take them off and on again everytime I move it (which is atleast once or twice a day) I just ordered a pair of compact so hoping that fixes my issue! Alot of people have mentioned that their hands feel cramped on the compact, but I'm a woman and have very tiny hands so I don't think I'll have much issue. I'm just not a joycon fan. Hoping I love the compact as much as my pros!
I hope you like em!!! I’ve got both Pokémon versions ready to be reviewed but I’m behind currently trying to edit this 8BitDo Ultimate video. I dig the size of the compacts!! Plus I think they look real cool.
@@switchunboxing oh my husband just bought me an 8bitdo wireless controller for me and I LOVE it. It's so seamless from switch to PC I love it! Looking forward to your review!
I desperately need a handheld controller that hangs off the sides of the Switch, with a D-pad that isn't refried dog shit. Yet somehow, the very reasonable request of having controls that actually _control your character_ is too much to ask from Nintendo and third parties. The Nitro Deck hits the dart board without coming close to the bullseye, which isn't great. However, it's still better than the D-pad on the Switch Lite or the miserable "form above function" joycons, which throw the dart in the opposite direction and buries it in the back of someone's skull.
These are great. I have smaller hands, so I like the square feet of these and regular joy con. The og split pad pro....I hate them.theyre too bulky and round. These are just amazing for me
@@switchunboxing do you like that huge wide feeling of the originals? I just find when you put that much of a gap in the middle, that it doesn't make sense to split a pro controller in half and sticking it on the ends of the switch
@@NintenDub I was a fan of the Split Pad Pro but they didn’t feel official like these do. I think the Pros are too wide and flat feeling for my hands. I’m a fan of the original JoyCon though and the side didn’t bother me. I just wanted better sticks for console style games. The compact though I really like it with its contours and everything is a good size and the buttons feel good. I like it.

Does anyone know how to turn them on ??
They don’t turn on. You just slide them on and they should start working! They do t use batteries they just run off the Switchs power
@@switchunboxing I got them
To work thank you 🫶🏽
Wich is the better te NYXI joycons or the hori compact?
In what regard?
@@switchunboxing at all
@@riddoabdul That’s just gonna come down to personal opinion my friend! All I can do is explain to you the differences. Then what you like best is all up to you! Depends on what you’re looking for. 😊
4:35 is where I compare them. I prefer the Compact myself. But wirelessly I tend to just use JoyCon.
I'm trying to decide which one, thanks for the comparisons!
I love the look of the Compacts way more - I like the Pikachu and Mimikyu one, but as someone that liked the original Xbox Duke controller I suspect the Pro will be more comfortable for me.
Yeah probably so!!
Thank you for this video.
Of course! Thank you for checking it out. 😊
I wish these could be combined as there own controller
Yeah that would be cool. They do sell a connecting piece that’s wire but turns em into a controller!
Thank you for letting me know I'll definitely be looking into it 😁
@@Shadow_of_origin of course! I think they have some designs too
bro just got the gengar split pad compact and it feels 💯
OoOooo yesss I’m getting mine next week!
@@SenorBezi Lol yeah you should be ok! Except the sticks can be kinda tappy
Can you compare to mobapad and binboks?
Yeah for sure. Might not be until next year though to be honest! Do they have any new MobaPad designs coming out ?
I actually prefer mushy buttons. Am I the only one.
I like mechanical and soft I just hate stiff buttons
Like I have the mobapad Chitu HD for my switch OLED and I love the mechanical buttons on it it’s faster to press compared to the stiff joycons buttons
And the Hori splitpad compacts I love too it’s fast to press the buttons
Honestly give me rubber contacts over tact switches any day when you can fit them in. I wouldn't call them mushy myself but soft and tactile which is nicer to press in than the tact switches on the joycons. Also that analog stick and cap? Yeah that's legitimately great for third party, I even like the size, resistance and amount of travel. I'm sure they're alps and will crap out after a year or maybe two unless you get blessed by the gods and get an alps joystick that actually does last a long while, But regardless of things that even plague first party controllers from all companies, they just feel good.
Yup my only hang up is the dead zone is very prominent. Otherwise I love these!
(And my daughter broke it)
So now I use the Nyxi. Even though my perfect controller would have M6’s buttons, sticks and shape, and the Hori’s ease of use, especially the mapping button being a one click solution, I use the Nyxi, which doesn’t excel at anything but does everything well enough. I only wish the face buttons felt a little more quality.
Glad you found what you like! The Nyxi/Binbok are really good for the price.
@@kgthegent Yeah that’s cool it comes with dif sizes, that does sound familiar!
@@Karasaywah Good brand!
So you might like these or the Nyxi/Binbok ones.
I wanted to love these. I have small hands and my they were cramping up with Almost as bad as the original joycons
Ahhhh that sucks. Anything you prefer?
I bought benbecool wireless joycons for £25 they have gyro and wake up button and are great
They don’t look so good but you know what maybe they’re super comfy and awesome. Might have to try it out!
@@switchunboxing you should. So far apart from rumble it's hard to fault them
Binbok?
@@TranquilLegend I think they’re talking about Beboncool controller
I have hori split pad compact Red it prefect not so and bulky and not small like official joycon
I like how they aren’t too big and not too small! I ended up liking the white ones better though. But these Gengar ones 👀 🔥
What do you mean you don’t know what’s going on? It’s a thumbstick
You don’t know that
To much Awesome
Impossible!
These are great. I have smaller hands, so I like the square feet of these and regular joy con. The og split pad pro....I hate them.theyre too bulky and round. These are just amazing for me
Yes I’m loving the shape
@@switchunboxing do you like that huge wide feeling of the originals? I just find when you put that much of a gap in the middle, that it doesn't make sense to split a pro controller in half and sticking it on the ends of the switch
@@NintenDub I was a fan of the Split Pad Pro but they didn’t feel official like these do. I think the Pros are too wide and flat feeling for my hands. I’m a fan of the original JoyCon though and the side didn’t bother me. I just wanted better sticks for console style games. The compact though I really like it with its contours and everything is a good size and the buttons feel good. I like it.
hori split pad pro !!!
Is that what you use currently?
Hori choses the weirdest colors for there joycons
True those are pretty random!! I like the Pokémon Gengar ones though they look sick. I’m dropping a video on em in a few days
looks like hori copied the logitech colour scheme
Ooo which one
mobapad
I need to check that one out!
