    this is super popular but I just wanna say… you should be able to have fun with a sims game without buying lots of expansion, game and stuff packs. the base game in itself should be good. add-ons shouldn’t be things that should’ve existed in the base game; swimming in places other than pools, acne, apartments and such things.

      I agree. Especially now that we're seeing indie devs do so much more content in their base games - sometimes with one or two devs total. And then they do FREE dlcs. It's just... If indie companies can do it, there's really no excuse for an AAA company like EA. It's so obvious at this point that they're just milking us for as much money as they can get. Especially as they start to split things up into smaller and smaller packs.

      I agree, I played Sims 3 with no expansion packs for YEARS and I loved it. Sims 4 feels unplayable without expansion packs/mods. Which I guess works for EA because I love the sims so I've bought more packs for Sims 4 (which I think I've been playing for about 2 or 3 years) than I did for Sims 3 (which I played for about 10 years - I did buy some packs when they were £5 each after sims 4 came out lol).

    I know that The Sims 4 has some overall terrible programming. But oh my god the toddler programming is so broken. They can inject themselves into the queue of their parents at any point and you have to FIGHT to cancel it. They do what I call the grabby hand of death and it just constantly keeps interrupting the parent's queue. I have the opposite problem with toddlers, as adults will destroy the toddler's current action and queue to "check toddler" when the kid gets anywhere near tired on their energy bar.
      I think the bed thing is a bug, because if you have the toddler just "move" to a spot right next to the bed, they'll get up on their own. But if they're in bed and you click the potty across the house or whatever and tell them to go use it, they'll do the grabby-hands thing for a random adult. So I've learned to just make the toddler step out of bed first and then queue up actions for it.

      Why? There's lots of mean little kids who grow up to be nice people. Tbh, as someone whose had a shitty childhood this would not be a good take. You're not your childhood, you can improve and grow. If you want this progression, the option is literally there for you. Just pick the mean trait when your kid grows up. Plus, if you have the family pack (or parent pack, whatever it's called) the traits you earn literally effect your adulthood. Like whether or not you're responsible, emotionall stable, etc. If you wanna make an angry, mean little brat there's all the options for you to do so.

    • @shawn.spencer
      @shawn.spencer 2 роки тому +33

      But you can already choose the mean trait when your child grows up. It shouldn't be compulsory because not everyone wants their gameplay like that and the point of the sims is that it has fluid gameplay so you can make the stories you want to make. Not unpopular, but I desperately wish we had more dynamic relationships.
    One bar for how Sim A feels about Sim B, one bar for how Sim B feels about Sim A, and one bar to generally show their relationship level (some clever design choices could keep this from being too cluttered, too).
    I like to make complex sims and flawed relationships/families. It’s impossible to have any love/hate relationships between sims, everything is only ever mutual, there is no one sided love or hatred, and it’s impossible to have a one sided crush or friendship for the kids and teens (which in my experience, was a HUGE thing in school).

      How cool would it be if they actually just grew? Like you had a tiny baby and then after a day or so it could sit up and then after a day or two longer it could crawl and then walk? I'd love it if there were a few more life stages. Like 1) newborn, 2) infant, 3) toddler, 4) preschooler, 5) child, 6) tween, 7) teen, 8) young adult, 9) adult, 10) middle-aged, 11) retiree, 12) elder, and more variations in height and wardrobe and gameplay options for each stage.
      It would be nice if there were actual consequences if you didn't help kids gain skills. Like military school or getting held back if they don't do homework or grades don't improve, or a child being more likely to have an accident or wetting the bed or something if they aren't toilet trained, or struggling with school more if they don't do well on thinking skills or struggling socially if they don't hit communication levels or receiving the clumsy trait if they don't get enough movement. I'd like the ability to turn those features off--sometimes how easy the Sims 4 is compared to previous iterations is nice--but it would be nice to have the option of a more challenging game. I also wish we could turn occults on or off in different files. They're a lot of fun and I like having them, but I don't necessarily want them showing up in every game.

You can't do that in Sims 4. So if you don't use CC/mods and you only like certain styles and locations you could end up feeling extremely limited in that category. It may be more user friendly, but creative choice took a big hit.

    • @melodye14
      @melodye14 2 роки тому +28

      Exactly. You can make diverse places in TS4, but I often find myself creating similar houses or using the same items, because those are the ones that look best, especially outside of the base game. Sims 3 was the best because even with base game objects you could use create a sim to add style and personality into a space, which made playing with a broke sim all the more fun.

Especially when in reality it's been shown that people who birth multiple children actually live shorter lives than they may have because of the stress on their body. I understand that they didn't want them to be able to die, and I'm cool with keeping them alive while they're preglant, but the fact that as long as they're a baby factory, they're immortal is just insane. So regarding clothes, I'd really like the idea if I could choose an x amount of clothing items that the sim already has, maybe a couple of pre-set outfits like we do now, but also have the option for my sim to go and randomise themselves an outfit from the existing items (randomise outfit, change shoes, add jewellery as separate actions). Other Sims could compliment or hate on the outfit, and e.g. if they get a lot of love, you can save it as an outfit (pop-up); if they hate it, it can have a negative moodlet etc. If you're tired of the clothes you have, you have to go buy items in store. I feel like Sims2 was basically this already, but I don't remember if it had some pre-chosen options for those who are not bothered constantly shopping for them. I'd also like the clothes to wear out. Like a tally of how many times you've worn it and a quality mark like furniture does. So something expensive would manage 20 wears without wear and tear, but something cheap only 5 etc.

    another thing about the sexuality update: sims have always been able to have gay relationships, but they were pansexual/exploring by default. so if you wanted to have a gay or lesbian sim who is exclusively attracted to their own gender, you'd have to herd them away from the other sex or else they'd start autonomously flirting and ruin your story 😭so for that reason i'm grateful for the update, but it is a bit disappointing that the sims still adheres to binary sex. that limitation is literally baked into the fabric of cas so i understand though. i just hope that changes in the sims 5

I love playing the hecking family (my otp gay sims 4 couple) and it always bothered me that they are set up as gay in game, but if they went to the romance festival or the free love nap happened to be voted in, Brent or Brant or both could end up being hit on by a female sim randomly and they would ACCEPT IT and next thing I know this married gay couple would have a slight romance bar with a female sim. The sexuality update gave me the option to finally define them as gay and even made it so that they will autonomously turn down a female who hits on them (much like us gay guys do in real life lol). I would definitely like to see babies getting some improvements. I also hope that, if they ever do that (which I doubt they will) that they keep the "age up" button. I find babies to be a bit tedious, so most the time I just skip them. I do think the gameplay options should still be there, for people who want that sort of thing. Best part of babies in Sims 4, by far, is the ability to completely skip the life state, haha.

    When the sexuality update was announced and explained I knew it was gonna get messed up with pronouns and the complexity of people's sexuality when they're anything but cis, and yeah it feels a bit like virtue signaling from EA BUT I was so overwhelmingly happy to see aromantic and asexual sims (for them to not be mutually exclusive!!!) not because I am but because other people ARE and they need that representation. It just sucks so bad to have this life simulator everyone loves that you can make yourself in but then certain groups of people can't do it at all. It makes you feel alien and wrong. It's the same problem with black representation (skintones, hair textures) and of course the trans community. Being trans does not mean having a masculine body but wearing feminine clothes, especially if you are transitioning and have a body very in between. I understand that it's hard with programming but I just wish EA addressed these issues. They praise their updates but rarely say "hey, we know that this is still lacking and here's why we might not be able to fix that". It's the unapologetic attitude for me.

      Yeah and same thing with mental health and disabilities. Like they just renamed the "insane" trait to "erratic" rather than addressing how much of a harmful stereotype the trait is. But there's no other trait to pick if you want your sim self to share your mental health issues. They just lumped multiple bad stereotypes of different mental illnesses into one & called it a day.

    I agree with the baby one, I don't want any outstanding big mechanics I just want it the way sims 3 did them, my favourite thing to do was put them in a stroller and take them for walks and be able to carry them into cars (I know sims 4 doesnt have cars either)and to events. all I want is just for them to not be stuck to that bassinet. Even if they do keep them as objects at least add some things you can move them around to like a play pen, walker, baby bouncer. Or something like that! I also loved sitting in a rocking chair with them, which in sims 4 is toddlers only :( the Sims 3 store had things like play pens and a lullaby swinging chair. I loved those!

    I actually agree on the sims 4 build / buy. I don’t enjoy the building process like I used to in the previous games, and because I don’t love super modern or my-house-looks-like-a-grandmother-lives-here styles, I find that I very rarely deviate from the few objects in the catalog that I’m willing to look at all the time, which gives my houses kind of always the same look, no matter how hard I try to make them different.

But the more I heard others talk about it, the more I realized how important this update was to ace and aro ppl. Also, while it’s easy to say “all it did was add straight sims 🙄” I think it’s easy to forget this adds 100% gay sims, who aren’t interested in sims of the opposite sex. Overall, I think it’s a very neat update and I’m glad the sims added it!

    my unpopular(?) the sims opinion is that they should have waited with releasing the pronoun update until all the languages were at least mostly ready for it. my language is heavily gendered and i understand that custom pronouns would require a lot more work than they do in the english version, but also all the rep theyre trying to do with sims using different sets of pronouns in the high school pack feels shallow to me cause its not going to be in my version of the game for probably a long time. also, with the lack of updates we're getting (as at least as far as im aware, the only blog posts with updates are in regards to the english version of the game and only translated at most) im really worried that maybe its never going to come out for other languages lol. so yeah i think it wouldve been better to not rush it and wait until the other language versions are either also ready to come out with it, or maybe at least mostly ready and then keep updating us on how its going. i know most simmers are playing the english version of the game and probably dont care, but as a non-binary person who speaks a very gendered language and lives in a pretty transphobic country it would mean a lot to finally be able to make my sims more like me
    also another pronoun update thing - i really hate that they have the pronouns but all your gender options are still male/female. i understand its built into the game and it would probably be difficult to make more options that are non-binary but also lol yeah you can use they/them but youre still going to be male or female according to the game. again, feels kind of shallow to me

    Seems like a lot of these simmers don't want to play a strategy game about life. If they read the prima guide of the sims 2, they won't like it I guess, because it goes way beyond in term of gameplay than just shopping for clothes, and pretty much everything about the game is like that.

    Never heard anyone else say it before now, but I agree with the one that building actually kills my interest in the game too. I can decorate a house just fine, but I'm so bad at the exterior of the house that any time I need a new house I get really annoyed and avoid playing for ages even though I'm eager to continue the gameplay otherwise.

  • @spaceusagid00dles

    18:15 I've gotta agree with Ruff Ruffman's statement, yes burglars are realistic but god can they be annoying.
    I've been playing the sims 3 recently and the most 'sims' thing happened to my family of three; man, female and a toddler. I was 'robbed' once which scared the begeesus out of me, especially when you're fast forwarding through the night, but when you have a burglar alarm the burglars are just jumpscares that wake your family up at the middle of the night and put them in a crappy mood for the morning. Anyway, Mr 'Robbie Bland' got caught and that was the end of that.
    About an in game week later, he returns for a round two; breaks into my house again, wakes everyone up (apart from the toddler) and gets caught all at 5:07 in the morning on a Monday. Later that day, my sim goes to the summer festival only for the man himself, Robbie Bland to be there and beat my sims in a hotdog eating contest.
    Burglars have their fair share of funny moments, but at the end of the day they're annoying events at night which just put everyone in a bad mood the following morning.

    I feel the Pan-comment. I see how it is important and i'm really happy for everyone who is happy about the pronounce and sexuality-update. And i also used it myself. BUT i also like the aspect that Sims, even if it makes no sense in a realistic way, would love almost everyone. There is no gender, no appearance-barrier. You can make youre Sim love evyrone you want, and this person will probaly accept you after some time. BUT this is also not gone. Just because there is this update dosn't mean you can't any longer play this way. Quite the contrary, to play the pronounce and sexuality update you have a heck ton of work to actually change all the stuff for all the important sims you play with xD.

      I might be wrong, but i thought the comment was about a similar thing i'm seeing in my game now--ALL the random townie sims are loading in default hetero/allo now. I wonder if it's a bug or maybe a mod thing. I haven't met any default ace or bi/pan sims, but every sim I meet is now default straight :/ idk if anyone else is having that issue. I love that we can edit sims to be any sexuality or romantic identity, and I'd be happy if premade townies in each pack had their own identities, but every sim i've met since the update has been default hetero and allo. i hope it's just a mod problem and not the actual game lol

    I think that toddlers can be so annoying because they need more that they can do independently. They have doll houses, the puzzle table, the iPad, and one playing animation for all toys. To learn skills, they need constant adult assistance. I've downloaded a bunch of toddler activities including cribs that you can keep the toddler in while you're doing chores or working and it has made playing with them so much more enjoyable. But not everyone has access to cc so it would be great if EA could give those toddlers some autonomy and more interactions.

      The only skill they need constant adult guidance for is the potty training- but even that could be bypassed if they have the independent trait. All of my toddlers are completely self-taught, especially since we have some items (like the mini slide, and the big tent) that make the skills go up faster. Not to mention, if you have 2+ toddlers they can also gain skills by watching each other gain skills.

    • @tirsden
      @tirsden 2 роки тому +2

      Toddlers have the puzzle toy to learn logic, and can learn speech in mirrors if I remember right. I've done more grow-up challenges than is probably sane, so I'm very familiar with potentially needing to up a toddler's skills without any help. It would be nice if they had more to do in general, because the toddler stage of said challenges is mostly trying to grind skills to max while getting one's queue destroyed by an uncontrolled adult trying to "check toddler."

    • @anahand4137
      @anahand4137 2 роки тому +1

      @@Kibeeeeee yes, you can gain all skills through the items I listed but only in a very repetitive way. When I want to have strong family relationship between my sims, putting my toddler in a room with a couple of items or teaching them flashcards isn't entertaining. The gameplay is restricted by the interactions a toddler can have. I just think they're less annoying in family gameplay when they have more options. If someone would rather their toddler be self taught, this version is fine but if I want a close parental relationship it doesn't feel right to leave my toddler in another room with an iPad while I work. Sorry, this is a bit of a ramble but I think it makes sense. Please let me know if it doesn't lol.

    One of my issues is that they've made sexuality into a marked category, and I preferred... not that. I also understand why people might like the ability to set NPCs to be gay, ace, aro, etc for their own gameplay, beyond controlling the player sims' choices. I just hate the way this was done - we keep getting vague acknowledgements that nonbinary people exist, but then they build this off binary choices... it's frustrating.
    Still my biggest issue honestly is CAS. I find it's difficult to manipulate the 'male' frame into having softer features or the 'female' frame to look more 'masculine.' It doesn't reflect the real diversity of cis bodies, and it's particularly frustrating when I want to have a trans sim and feel like I'm picking between making them look entirely cisgender, or like an unimaginative stereotype of a trans person, because the body sliders are sex-segregated. I get that it might be difficult to change after having built the game this way - clearly pronouns weren't that simple, since it took forever and I still get text that misgenders my sims! I also get inapplicable 'wants,' like a trans sim wanting to 'try for baby' with his wife even though it's not an option. In a good mood, this is annoying. Sometimes it's much more grating.
    It adds so much insult to injury to have all this marketing on the idea that the sims is inclusive and groundbreaking, when they've really failed to prioritize actually building these features in properly in the 22 years since Jamie Doornbos coded in same-sex relationships without asking. Tbh it just feels like they want to be able to obscure how much legitimate criticism they're getting for constantly releasing busted features. If they claim the features are progressive, it makes it sound like criticism is just homophobia or something.

    Also, in regards to the sexuality update "just adding straight people," it allows players to make strictly gay sims as well. There was a simmer on reddit saying how happy she was with the sexuality update because she was always uncomfortable with her lesbian sims happily accepting flirtation from male sims, and this update made that to it wouldn't happen. (obviously... the update isn't perfect, as a nonbinary person the male-female options are a little awkward lol)
