    I studied at bimm back in 2007 when they was more proactive. The way the system works is if you meet the niche for what’s relevant at the time you’ll get the work if you have the attitude.
    For me I got nothing but I’ve got friends that made mad connections from bimm.
    Go in with the attitude of being the best (in a humble way) learn. Take criticism and grow.
    Bimm is a place that puts things in to perspective as most of the time people are better than you in sense.

    I finished the first year at at BIMM (Music Production) in Berlin, and all i have to say is that if you want to be an artist, you are better off NOT going to this school. But if you want to work in the creative industries and not go your own way, BIMM is a great choice for you.

      If BIMM Berlin has a similarly structured course to BIMM London, then there are some modules that are very beneficial for artists in the 2nd and 3rd years. But I agree with your second point, the course introduces you to lots of new things, like Max MSP, working with hardware or creating music and sound for TV/Movies.

    Great video man - not sure if you’ll still be seeing these comments, but I have an interview coming up at the end of the month for Songwriting & Music Production at BIMM Brighton and I’m facing this huge anxiety of impostor syndrome and feeling like I’m not gonna be as good as what they’re expecting. Do you have any tips on the interview process for this subject? As in, how to reduce that anxiety and nerves, what kind of things to look out for and improve in my portfolio submissions and how I should prepare for the audition? Would love to hear back from you!

    • @Harknee
      @Harknee  2 роки тому

      Thanks! And yes I am!
      It’s not the end of the world if they don’t think you’re good enough (I’m sure you won’t be though). But that’s the point of the interview, to see if you are good enough, if you are, then great , you’re on course! If not, then it hasn’t cost you anything and it’ll be a great learning experience and it should motivate you to improve your songwriting and/or instrument playing and you could apply again a year or two later where I’m sure you’ll be of a good enough standard.
      Unfortunately my interview process was different to yours, I simply had a discussion about a couple of my tracks, there was no audition. But for the portfolio and any discussion you have about your tracks, just make sure you can explain all the details of the song writing and sound like there was some thought behind the process, if there was, then really lean into that.
      As for your nerves, honestly, getting into BIMM isn’t that difficult. With brexit and covid, I suspect there will be less international students applying, meaning there should be more of a chance to get a place. Also, not everyone there is Jimmy Hendrix or Adele, most of them are just starting out and aren’t supremely talented, but that’s the point of BIMM, to improve your music and become an all round better artist. You got this👊🏻

    Do you know anyone who had taken a diploma instead of attending a complete degree in music production? If yes, what was their compressed experience like and would they recommend a diploma over a degree?

    • @Harknee
      @Harknee  3 роки тому

      I may have bumped into a couple of diploma students but I never got the chance to talk to them about the differences. Obviously with diploma, you're not going to studying as many modules compared to a degree but I don't think that will take anything away from the experience. Just getting to be in the building at BIMM and being around like minded producers is the biggest thing.
      One thing I will say is, put the effort in, you'll get more out of it if you put more in, spend all day in the mac suites working on music, talking to the people around you and going to the gigs they put on, I didn't do enough of this and I wish I had. You could do this for 1 year or 3 years, its up to you really.

    Thanks for this. I've been producing music since 2001 and have done several short courses through the years and actually have my own main recording studio in Brighton and a serious home studio. But I always wanted a degree to back up what I've learned. Possibly because I am 40 and having a midlife crisis and want to go back to school!
    But I just don't think it would push me enough into the advanced levels of production that I'm striving for.
    Also, pushing Pro Tools is really offputting!
    I absolutely hate it and couldn't care less if it's industry standard. I can use it, because I've been forced to in studios I've worked in, but it's truly dreadful.
    I've been using Cubase since version 3.. it's my DAW of choice. And the amount of time spent on dry subjects seems like a waste of time. Especially as it's all changing so quickly. People are releasing their own music onto Spotify with platforms like Distrokid for example.
    I wish they'd just give me some exams and I could get the degree that way 😂

    • @Harknee

      It's great to hear you're looking to get into education! As you've got a lot of experience, you might want to look into a Masters degree instead. That's what I'm doing at the moment and the step up from a Bachelors degree is pretty sizeable and could push you, like you wanted.
      There seems to be a lot more freedom, at least on my masters degree, to work how you want, on whatever you want, the learning outcomes for the assessments are a lot more open and allow the students to make the assessments fit their preferences, rather than the other way around.
      I know you said you were living in the Brighton so I'm not sure what's available down there but here at my uni, we offer a specialised Record Production course that might be what you're looking for. As you seem to have working experience already, universities would consider you, even without a Bachelors degree.

      If anything I was outnumbered being an electronic music producer! It certainly felt like more people came from a rock/indie background, they knew more about being in a recording studio with microphones and mixing desks I seem to remember. But I think that is slowly changing as more people like me have appeared at BIMM and they're starting to cater for electronic music production a bit more, as well as your traditional music producer stuff (running a music studio, mic placement, live sound engineering). There's also been some rap/hip hop producers on the production courses recently as well, I think you'll find the course to be very diverse with lots of people with lots of different musical backgrounds!

      Hey! If you have a basic understanding of a DAW, e.g. you know what the mixer does and the difference between MIDI and audio tracks, and the different parts of a synthesiser, like the oscillator, filter and envelope, then you should be fine.
      Just looking at the modules now, theres a lot of stuff there thats quite specific but they're the kind of thing that the tutors aren't expecting anyone to know much, if anything about, so they'll start from the beginning and give everyone a chance to get up to speed. `

      No school is better or worse for networking or finding connections, you don't necessarily need a school to do this, places like BIMM are more focused on teaching. If you just want to do networking then save your money and spend your time going to gigs and connecting with other artists there. You can go to a school like BIMM but they aren't going to do the networking for you, you have to do that all yourself, it will be the same at other schools too.

      You’re only 19 and you feel too old?? Surely you don’t mean that?
      I’m biased and I’ll say London is better because I’m English and I live hear and I’ve never been to the US so don’t know about them. The other thing to consider is leaving your country, my partner is from France and she was considering moving to London or LA for work and one of the massive advantages of London is that she’s much much closer to France and her family. This may or may not apply to you but it’s worth considering as it’s probably not something you’ve thought about. Also, NYC or LA won’t be any cheaper than London, they’re all massive international cities and some of the most expensive places to live on earth.
      This school isn’t a waste of time, it’s really good, despite some of the things I said in the video. Also, saying “I’m already 19” as if 19 is really old, you’re barely an adult!

    • @Harknee
      @Harknee  Рік тому +1

      In regards to your first point, it depends what you want to get out of it, if you're an experienced drummer who's performed a lot then a place like BIMM may not be for you, but if you're relatively new then one of the performance courses maybe a good fit. Since I've left, they also offer courses that cover multiple disciplines, so if you wanted to keep up your drumming but learn a bit of production or event management as well, then they offer courses for those options too.
      Admittedly, on the BA courses, BIMM was mostly younger students, late teens to early 20s and that obviously brings a particular energy to the place, but everyone I met was friendly and welcoming and the staff do a great job of creating this friendly atmosphere about the place. So whilst you may feel out of place initially, everyone should be very approachable and you should fit in very quickly.
      Good thing to remember is that everyone is there because they love music, I believe that adds to the nice atmosphere, you're surrounded by music lovers! I'm currently studying a masters degree at a traditional university that offers all sorts of courses and there isn't this feeling of being surrounded by music lovers, that's one of the great strengths of BIMM. Hope this all helps!

    • @Harknee
      @Harknee  3 роки тому +1

      If you are already making music at home then I'm sure you'll be good enough! You don't need to be a super producer to get on the course, as long as you have a basic understanding of a DAW, how synthesisers work (oscillators, filters, FX) and microphones, then you'll be fine to study at BIMM. There are a lot of people at BIMM like you who are starting to learn music production and they do really well on the course.
      The audition is quite easy, if you can explain how you produced a song and why you chose to use a certain synthesiser or reverb plugin, then you should have no problems.
      Also, you have a year and a half to learn lots about music production before you start! If you have any questions, feel free to send me a DM on instagram.
