Nice ...seen pics of these in urban Berlin ... You wouldn't think so but its very effective. I read that all you need to do is create a couple of seconds of doubt with the enemy tank commander wondering what he is looking at . Then that could be just enough time to allow you to get the first shot off and the kill. Sheer brilliance .
Just leave the turret. The more things break down and don't work, the more realistic the restoration job will be. Let's face it. British or not, Chieftain was a dog. By the second day of an exercise (or war) it was best used duggin, hull-down as a pillbox. Maybe the later Mks were a little better but still a three legged woof woof. A quote by a former 4th RTR commander always stuck in my memory. "We used to say that Chieftain was the best tank in the world as long as it broke down in a good fire position. There was a strong element of truth in that statement. Its armour protection was good, its 120mm rifled gun powerful and accurate, but its automotive systems let it down." I think he was being kind, because the crew and REME, who had to work with and then fix the bloody things. Were far less nostalgic. They didn't even take the piss and trust me, that is a bad sign.
She looks fantastic and sounds even better. As a woman now in her fifties, people are often surprised that I love this tank, but my father was in the Tank regiment based in BAOR in the late 70s and early 80s, so I grew up around this roaring monster. To this day that engine scream is a sound I love. Thank you for sharing the video and for reminding me of happier times.
@@mikewinston8709 I grew up for a time in Paderborn, a place that I have very fond memories of. I went to school there too, so spent a lot of time seeing the sights when I could escape from my parents clutches. As such I explored as much of the Sennelager ranges as I could as a ten year old! On one occasion (in around 1984) I went into work with my Father and he took me for a short ride in an Alvis Stalwart, which was a magnificent machine. When my Father left the army and we returned to civilian life in the UK, it felt odd that kids stayed in the same place and had barely left the county, when I had seen so much of Europe and attended schools in different countries. 😁
My Grandfather was part of the Royal Lancers, he has been in germany alot in Paderborn, Detmold etc. but he was also in Iran when they was going to buy Cheiftain off of us and we was going to update them to their needs just prior to the iranian crisis. Having served in Berlin brigade back in the 80s looks like you`ve got it bang on guys, great job and a joy to watch, and even better to hear, nothing quite like the sound of a chieftain screaming at full tilt, brought a smile to this old tankies face for sure, 😁
There’s nothing like the sound of a Chieftain 😊 I think you’ll get the turret to power up, getting it under control with unknown electronics 😮 Just make sure you have clearance all the way round. We had a few that took off on their own on the first power on - luckily those turrets were on the test stands before mating back onto the hull. As you’re doing the testing on the hull, make sure the micro switches that detect the turret position in relation to the hull are working - I’m sure you know - but they force the gun up and across the rear deck. Good luck, exciting time ahead me thinks 😉
It amazes me how these tanks can actually get up and go when you put your foot down, obviously not hot hatch speed, but for something that weights 50 ish tones they do get a shift on
Well done Lads and Lasses! That is a mega paint job and the old girl deserved looking her best. Die Berliner Brigade lebt weiter ..... 👏👏 While the sound of a Meteor in a Centurion is of course classic that howl of the L60 is just sheer music. Got to be THE 'tank' soundtrack. The engine and gearbox looked the dogs wotsits as well. 👍👍
An excellent job there guys, all of your efforts have paid off handsomely. Just the sound of that engine made the hairs on the back of neck stand tall. It took me back to the autumn exercises whilst I was serving in BAOR. As a sapper we would often be tasked to throw a bridge across a gap at night, the soundtrack would often be the throaty roar of the Chieftans as they manoeuvred in the distance. With the bridge open, one by one these monsters would emerge from the darkness, cross the bridge and disappear once again into the night, the roar of the engine becoming fainter as they tracked further away. Oooooooooh matron.
You guys have done great so far, a lot of work. Retired now but was Canadian Army (Armour) stationed at Lahr W. Germany early ‘80s serving on Leopard C1. My regiment would go north to Bergen-Hohne twice a year for gun camps. Only time we ever seen Chieftains. Two things this brings back memories of was that unique engine growl and all the exhaust smoke. Good luck future endeavours.
Whoever chose the music has class! another brilliant video. I know f all about anything you guys do but I know I love it. Please keep them coming they are brilliant.
Addicted! Came across your UA-cam videos one day. I grew up in Crossgates, Leeds where Barnbow made the Cheiftan tanks. The noise of these tanks immediately brings back all those fond memories growing up peering through the fence as they tested the tanks...hence played one of your videos to relive the unbeleivabel sound of a Cheiftan. However I am now addicted to your channel. I just wanted to congratulate you, not only on your videos but your immense skillset. What a great job you all do, well done! Keep up the great work and keep up with the videos! Brilliant!
great camo job guys, looks like the dazzle camo they used on british ww1 royal navy ships not to hide but to make rangefinding hard, keep up the great work.
For me you guys have done a great job on this tank for what you have done and I love seeing each video as I had aspirations of joining the R.E.M.E corps but never did due to few reasons but thanks for providing content that partly scratches that itch of tinkering with war machines.
Mr Hewes, as someone who was born & raised in Spandau/ West-Berlin/ British Sector in the early 70s it was a familiar sight to see Chieftains on public roads. I really feel honored that you guys bring back these memories. BTW I think you nailed it with the Berlin Brigade paintjob but it still needs the union jack on the front fender plus the red circle.
MY DAD SERVED FOR 20 YEARS IN 14/20 KINGS HUSSARS..ONE OF OUR SQUADRONS WAS THE LAST TO SERVE ON CHIEFTAIN IN BERLIN..I THINK YOU HAVE DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB ON THE BERLIN BRIGADE CHIEFTAIN KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Definitely a brilliant job in total, I reckon you will get the turret to work, and at the end bag some Stella and sit in front of chieftain and smile on what you have achieved
Stella? Stella??? If you were in the Berlin Infantry Brigade it was always Berliner Kindl, Berliner Weiss or Pilsener Urquell depending on the season and whether you'd had a trip to the East recently.
theres this pretty cool new tech, instead of sandblasting it's basically crushed dried ice blasting, it gives the same abrasive effect but disolves into the air
Can't wait for the thermal sleeves to arrive for the gun to complete the look once they have been painted the right colours. I seem to remember when I did a little work for Nick Mead he had a Berlin chieftain which no doubt he's either wrecked or sold on, it used to make me angry seeing all that armour out to pasture to rust and gather mould in his fields not a single tank sheet in sight, not even a basic one over the engine deck's to stop the water getting in. Looking forward to seeing what's gonna happen with the warrior 😉.
1 engine sound I can never get tired of the chieftan :) I look at my little 200tdi land rover and think yep same factory made the chieftan engine :) wouldnt fit though LOL
now that does look the part great job jack ! and doesn't that sound aw sum when its revving its heart out , great job all round guys hope you get the turret to rotate by electric
Different paint job but in the right place it might fit. Perhaps Norway. A day trip out to find out one day. Lot of hard work as you and we have watched since it first arrived. Think you will get the turret to work but we all agree Ted will do the technical bits
Spectacular work on the camo scheme! One thing, that tank doesn't actually need camo, it runs in its own smokescreen all the time! 🙂 Seriously, though, it's a fab job and kudos to all involved, including Ted! You'll have that turret spinning like a top soon (well, you know what I mean!).
Great paint job, you would need that second look to see its shape. As for the turret, i'm 69, been 'messing' with cars and M/Cs and know enough (just), but you lot!!!! Yes the turret will work!
Brought back memories when I say sockets being found once gear box was out. When I was in the Army in a transport regiment as a punishment you had to steam clean the engine bay once engine taken out of the six wheeled stolly I absolutely loved it. engine bay as it was a amphibious vehicle it was watertight and alway ankle deep in oil and water. You see when REME would service the vehicle any spanner sockets and tools they dropped in the gunk stayed there. I made a fortune selling all the stuff i found. My dad was a owner driver and had a lorry and always had a buyer for the tools normally dads mates who had lorries and his fitter. 😂😂

Pretty cool
Does the barrel not get painted in that scheme or does the cover take care of that?
I'm going to paint my car so I'm invisible in urban areas. 😮
Really good, what shows is Seb showing it at this year?
Yes, I feel cautiously optimistic that under Ted's wise guidance the turret will indeed be bought back to life.
Just leave the turret. The more things break down and don't work, the more realistic the restoration job will be.

What a beast! She looks and sounds magnificent.

Music fitted perfectly with the unusually frantic masking session!
