It’s pretty simple today, sure, but I can’t imagine how mind blowing these cutscenes must have been in the 80s when this came out. You gotta think of how many console games of the time just had a text screen at the title and maybe an ending image, then in comes Ninja Gaiden with this awesome story that plays out over the course of the whole game. Hell even today it’s still got a really cool tale to tell, and the translation is like actually good which is something not even Metal Gear got back then. An awesome classic game all around!
@@bezoticallyyours83 yup Golgo 13 had some nice looking cutscenes but the way Tecmo sequenced these along with the fun gameplay is unmatched. Golgo 13’s gameplay was tough at certain parts from what I remember
The limited animation were absolutely just because it's an NES game with very tight constraints on ROM space, but even today this game is a golden example of how to make the most out of a tight animation budget and is a good frame of reference for what techniques you can still use for dramatic effect.
Yes I totally agree, it was an awesome feeling, though it sucked that Ryu's Father Ken Haybusa dies right after He reunites with Him upon learning from Bloody Malth that He was still alive 😢
It took me like 12 years, but I finally beat it while home from college one summer around 2002 or so. I used to watch my older brother play it when I was a kid. I don’t think he ever beat it though.
A designated 'classic', yes. But I don't think this game gets the proper credit it deserves for how ridiculously groundbreaking and innovative it was for its time. Literally game changing, and it blew my 9 year old mind when it dropped in '89. Forever grateful to all the developers, writers, artists, and musicians involved in making this masterpiece.
Analyzing these cutscenes, the Japanese know how to minimize using animation and still the content grabs your attention. It is many of the illustrations that are repeated and upcycled if you really think about it to minimize cost while it continues to create an impact with a modest budget. These are good modest budget techniques that have minimal animation. Alien vs Predator Capcom Arcade version has minimal animation and the music draws you in the most. Only mouths move, heads turn, it’s a moving illustration or storybook.
Yeah even nowadays it holds up pretty well given the support, id say the Ninja Gaiden games (all of them) have the most pleasant cutscenes for 8 bit games. Tecmo knew how to do it. That's how you give live to a really minimal system of representation
Anybody else ever wonder at all how exactly Ken was "killed", or why he fell over "as if dead"? It always looked to me like he and Malth clashed swords in the air but that was all.
I found the story of this game more intriguing and magical to the point that, it grabs my attention more than what is released nowadays with the tired aaa cinematic realism and voice acting.

It always bothered me as a kid that Malth didn't look anything like the same person later in the game.I was looking forward to fighting the skilled ninja at 0:25 but the developers instead gave us this dude at 12:00.
@Jason Bowser I always wondered about that as a kid also. How did he go from this cool black suited ninja to a huge dude with a goofy-looking mask, and shield that throws lightning? No explanation at all.
@11:41. That look like Hugh Laurie on acid to anyone else? LMAO! This was one of my absolute favorite nes games, and the one it took me until adulthood to actually beat! It had the deepest plot, scariest imagry (to an 11 year old, demon resurrection and moons turning to blood are indeed scary😮) BUT the DUMBEST outfit for a main villain Ive ever seen, to this day. Jaquio looks like the mascot for a team called the dung beetles! Otherwise this game is an 8bit masterpiece, although with an incredibly difficult final boss. I vividly recall ending playthroughs in FURY, after going the whole way through and killing every other boss, only to get pwned by the Demon and run out of time and shut the system off!
I was 11 when this game came out. The beginning scene I would always try and jump in the air as they did... Hitting my cousin as hard as I could with our plastic swords, good times...
Was Irene the girl who shot Ryu in the bar? If so, why is he making out with her? What did "I see the anesthetic is wearing off" mean? Who was anesthetized? What is a sea swallow? Why didn't Ken even draw his sword when battling Malth? Who is Lukifell?
Yes, Irene was the girl that shot ryu at the bar?... She shot him with a tranquilizing dart and Kidnapped Ryu... Sea swallow was Irene's code name... I'm sure Ken did try to fight Malth but he lost to him but they probably wanted to turn Ken into the mask devil because of how strong he is... Like a new soldier in Jaquio army... So they transformed Ken because Ken was probably one of the few people that could challenge them.... But none of them knew Ryu was this strong... Lukifell is probably the center they was holding ryu at.... At what point did you see something about lukifell?...
@@zulu3274 I thought that what you said about the tranquilizing dart was true. If Irene had used a bullet, Ryu would be injured or dead, right? I remember when the game came out in 1989. Nintendo Power magazine raved about the cut scenes. Totally groundbreaking.
本当に凄かった…。カットシーンがあるのは僅かで、まじかるキッズどろぴー(NESのThe Krion Conquestはカットシーン削除)などがありますが忍者龍剣伝は特に素晴らしかったです。
