Classical Protestantism (Anglican, Lutheran, Reformed) has always subscribed to the creeds of the ancient church (Nicene, Apostles, Athanasian) and has always believed in the value of catechisms and the importance of catechizing new believers.

If the clarity isn’t found in the Bible, then what Bible are you reading? Because the Bible I know teaches ALL you need to know. The God I know wouldn’t miss out on anything He didn’t included in the Bible. Picking the verses we want rather than reading and understanding the Bible is simply denying the faith and then we would write a separate book to cater to what we want to believe rather than what God wants for us. The Bible is MORE accessible than any other book in the world. To simply deny any part of the Bible is to deny God.

The Roman Catholic Church appeals to oral tradition as a separate authoritative source of doctrine which is distinct from Holy Scripture. Consequently, they should be able to tell us the content of this tradition as well as where we can find it. However, Rome does neither of these things. In fact, there is no separate existence of this alleged tradition apart from the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Therefore, sacred tradition, as Rome defines it, ends up being the same as the teaching of the church. Since this is the case, then how do we know it is really genuine sacred tradition which they are teaching? Basically, we have to take their word for it. Yet, we find that many of the teachings of the Roman Church actually contradict God’s written Word. Therefore, of necessity, we must reject these teachings as originating from God.
THE WORD “TRADITION” IS NOT USED BY ROME IN THE SAME SENSE AS THE APOSTLE PAUL. There is something else that needs to be mentioned. When Rome appeals to holy tradition, it is not the same thing as what the Apostle Paul meant when he referred to tradition. The concept of tradition, as used in the New Testament by the apostle Paul, does not refer to that which was additional to Scripture. Rather it refers to that which was ultimately contained in the Scripture. It is the authoritative “teaching” of the apostles. Before the New Testament was completed, the oral teaching of the apostles carried the same authority as their written works. They would communicate with the believers either orally or in writing. Once the New Testament was completed and the last of the apostles had died, there was no more oral communication. The only teaching which was binding on the believer was that which was written.
Thus, the word “tradition” as it is found in the teachings of Paul, is neither the same concept nor the same content that the Roman Church now claims for itself. It has nothing to do with traditions about the papacy, Mary, or any other unique doctrines of the Roman Church.
It must also be appreciated that there is no agreement among Roman Catholics as to whether this tradition is implicitly found in Scripture, or if it was handed down separately as a second source of divine truth.
While Roman Catholics teach that the written Scriptures are the Word of God, they do not believe that everything which God wants to say to humanity is found in the Scripture. It is Scripture plus holy tradition where the truth of God can be found. Basically, this makes Scripture under the authority of sacred tradition. The Roman Church also says that this holy tradition has been handed down exclusively to them and them alone. Furthermore, it is also claimed that the Scripture, plus this sacred tradition, can only be properly interpreted by the Roman Catholic Church. This makes the Roman Catholic Church the place where God’s final authority rests. Roman Catholics attempt to demonstrate their claim from Scripture. They point to a number of places where the New Testament commands believers to follow the traditions they had received.
The facts do not support the Roman position. There is nothing in the teachings of Jesus which gives any support to tradition being some type of divine authority. Furthermore, the traditions Paul spoke about obeying were the oral teachings of the apostles about Christ. While the New Testament was being written, the oral teaching, as well as the written teaching, were sources of authority for believers.
However, once the New Testament was completed, and God said all that He needed to say, there was no need for any oral tradition to be passed on. Any oral tradition which would have been handed down would certainly have agreed with what was written in the New Testament. However, we find a number of doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church which are not only absent from the New Testament, they actually contradict what the New Testament says.
Thus, the various differences that we find between Protestants and Roman Catholics, with respect to where final authority rests, is an issue that will not go away. Someone has to be wrong. As we have seen, the biblical evidence shows that it is the Roman Church and their practices which are contradictory to the teachings of Scripture. Consequently, their position on sacred tradition, as an equal source of authority to the written Scripture, should be rejected.

Im glad i came across this video because in the Oceania region specifically my home country of Samoa uses catechism where couples go into seminary for about 3-4 years graduating with a diploma and being used as spiritual parents within villages that look after each designated flock. The catechists are there to spiritually guide the flock and help (alongside priests) build the spiritual journey of the flock. As spiritual parents they would run bible studies for youth, the good lady would run workshops with young women and mothers and together they would help run sunday school for young children. I would love to be able to speak to you because i think theres so much we could talk about. In Samoa there has been an influence of Samoan culture (or fa'asamoa) elements that have been infused within the catholic practice and have been working fine for us since.
    Great video by the way!

Genuinely though.... extra stuff in 2nd century and extra stuff in 20th century.... both are extra.
If it’s things like stem cells, abortion, euthanasia we only have biblical principles to apply. But if it’s something like trinity or Mary or sacraments... if it’s not in the bible how do we know Jesus and his first disciples really believed in that?
Didn’t even Paul had to correct the other churches of his time from deviation? Those were the early church started by the disciples no?

Are Paul's corrections not an example of proper, healthy authority being applied? Primarily, we have faith that Marian dogmas and the sacraments are true because we have faith that Christ established and works through his Church. Secondarily, we can see the consistency of these things with Scripture and history.
