For those like me who think it's too expensive, you can get a rad2x cable which essentially does the same thing for less than half the price. No lag, region free, rgb support, no external power, works on n64, snes and gamecube.
@Brasileiro Patriota I am not sure that is the case. From what I gathered Eon just ripped off the RetroTink 2x. They use the ADV7280 video decoder and a PCM1808 Audio ADC. But they made it crappier and with less features.
@Brasileiro Patriota Well your original claim of it being "an kebidu SCART To HDMI with a n64 connector instead of scart... it's the same board..." is simply not true. Unless you actually bought both and compared it yourself, you are making a claim with no evidence to support it. If what you say is true, support your claim.
Fantastic review. All the options on the table. Thanks for all the work. Will go for Rgb modded n64 since i already have hd retrovision cables and a retrotink. Also i personally think Etim's Rgb Mod with Deblur + Hd retrovision Cables + Retrotink 2X looks on par with the Ultra Hdmi
I don't understand the point of these. I feel like if you're a purist that has to play on original hardware then you should also have a CRT TV. These old consoles were designed with the characteristics of a tube TV in mind. An HDMI adapter can't reproduce things like the shadow mask, phosphor glow, color bleed, electron convergence, etc. If all you want is to play N64 games on a modern TV then you'd be better off using an emulator. At least then you have features to help it look a bit better like higher internal resolution, HD textures, screen filters, etc. This just looks like complete ass to me. At least use a frame meister.
It’s always a good thing to have options, to get better visuals from the N64 to a modern tv. This device is cool, but not for me. I’m happy with my old line doubler (an iscan pro that has av, s-video and component inputs, and outputs to vga), a mini slg for some sweet looking scanlines, and a vga to hdmi converter. If an N64 was the only retro system I owned, it would be something that I would consider.
Thanks for the best info as per the usual MLP. I'd love to chat with you sometime about you last video because I am exactly on the same page. Only thing I have to day about this (which I did pre-order and do not have another solution) is that at least to me, the Ultra HDMI and the Super 64 M-Cable combo seems to look the same. On one had that is awesome for me to see/know and on the other it suck because id have to spend another 100 dollars on the m-cable to achieve what I would like. Man the OCD that goes along with this stuff!...
I know its expensive but its the best plug and play solution, and compared to the ultra hdmi mod, if your system breaks you can just pull it out and plug into another system easily. The ultra hdmi mod is not easy to get a hold of and its expensive too.
i gotta say im shocked at the difference the ultra hdmi mod has versus the other options, it just looks so much more crisper imo the cost seems to be a hamper on these adapters and really the mcable didn't do much of a drastic change to me i guess the downside is, i've seen ultra hdmi kits for actually under 100 bucks but then you have to consider opening up your system and modding it or paying someone to mod it i think this solution is fine for plug and play but really not as drastic as the gcn adapter and not as easily affordable right now, so for most people id either wait for clones to come out at a cheaper price or swallow the cost and just play with a regular hdmi
Nice comparison video. I've heard that the Retrotink 2x and Super 64 are basically the same thing repeatedly with identical results however with Ocarina of Time at 10:30 with Super 64 vs Retrotink at 11:53, there is no contest imo, just look at the floor tiles. What is your opinion Madlittlepixel?
Not overly impressed with the mcable for the high price. Looks like it basically adds a bit more contrast (extends the black levels slightly), and adds some edge sharpening and a tiny bit of gamma correction. I'm wondering why the aspect ratio gets changed as well, unless that's a capture issue with the different resolutions? The output of the Super 64 looks like what you'd expect from running S-Video into a capture card, which is pretty much what it will be doing. Which is fair enough for convenience and price, as a lot of people just want to be able to hook up their older consoles to a modern display more easily.
Im unsure with the aspect ratio issues, but I had a couple other UA-camrs hit me up over the past couple weeks with the same or similar problem. The mcable does improve the visuals in my opinion a bit, but Id never spend that kind of money for a hdmi cable, it can be a pain to use as well. Has to be powered... Powering an hdmi cable... Yeah im not into that much but some people really like the cable. I just didnt want to spend a lot of time talking about it in this video.
Too expensive! Better to wait they the drop the price by half as they did with first generation of the gc hdmi adapter, when they started to have competition.
Hey man have you done any videos in the past concerning that open source scaler box? I've been interested in that recently yet I'm a little unsure as to where to start with it is it worth it, ECT. Appreciate it bruddah!
@@user-rd5wj2mm8n you wont get a component signal out of the N64 unless you rgb mod it and use the hd retrovision cables I think. Im not sure if thats correct but I think its easier just to get a crt
@@Oni64 this is true. luckily modding an N64 for RGB is a relatively cheap and inexpensive and definitely worth, particularly if you have some SNES hd Retrovision cables at hand.
Well the best you will get from a stock N64 in North America is S-Video... the Tink 2x Pro and the Super 64 will both provide similar results if using S-video on the Tink2x... if your console was RGB modded then the Tink would be the best way to go for visuals.
I would gladly pay this price if they changed this color to blue and changed their logo to a pokeball. So hard for us Pikachu n64 owners to get matching accessories
Who said that? Im not a fan of $100+ hdmi cables and I would never spend the money on one, but I definitely saw a big improvement using it with the Super 64.
Ultra hdmi is sick and I been looking for one. The eon isn't worth the 150. It's bare bones and even at 75 it seems like a hard pill to swallow. Hopefully another company comes up with a more affordable solution since a non digital signal for that price is rape imo
This thing is insanely overpriced. The smoothing feature is outright stupid. That's the last thing the N64 needs. N64 already blurs the hell out of everything. Adding more blur to it is like trying to climb out of a hole by digging straight down. This is a definite pass for me.
It's not bad. It's kind of a shame that price discussion is always going to be on top. If they could have brought it in at half that price I think the discussion would be much different. That group of buyers wouldn't have cared about the slightly lower visuals. At $150 you are in the enthusiast zone. When you're catering to that market it needs to be the best. Best of Svideo really doesn't get you far in a community that doesn't associate RGB with the pretty lights on computer parts. RGB is our God
There's ups and downs I see with the mcable vs your other HDMI cord. The m cable had less interference but I guess due to your capture device or UA-cam it had some frame skipping. The eon device itself is just a slight bit better than the ultra HDMI because it's less foggy imo
WOW a cable that costs more than the console! MEH...looks pretty much the same to me. What I don't understand is HOW this company can justify their $150 price tag (even after all this time on the market). Their Gamecube adapter is still $150 even after a revision...way to take advantage of the retro community. Am I paying for fancy packaging, are the internal components gold plated....do they have to pay a Trump tariff. LOL????? WTF! As for me, I will opt for the $15-30 options available which work fine for the budget conscious consumer.
Does the pound hdmi cable for snes works with n64? Just curious... cause it would be a $25 cable vs a $150 adapter and if it is comparable for the price... it is the same port on n64 as well as snes
This EON adapter is for sure overpriced for what you get. Once you hit that $150 mark (current availability is predictably bad and its often ever more) then it makes sense to go balls out and get an Ultra HDMI mod. I was able to get mine off eBay for $230, not a great price but not horrible either given the semiconductor shortage. Then its up to you to attempt the mod yourself or hire it out. (I'm going the latter route) All told this will probably run me just over $300, but its the best of the best. Not too bad either given a pre-modded Ultra HDMI N64 often goes for $500 minimum.
You keep referring to the mCable as "an HDMI cable" and how you "won't spend $100 on an HDMI cable", except that it's not an HDMI cable, it's a graphic processor embedded in an HDMI cable form factor. You have to be capable of seeing beyond the physical shape of the cable, right? You're no dummy. I'm not an mCable fan either, but at least rule it out because it doesn't add much for what it costs, rather than disregarding for it for being something it isn't. Best wishes.
It is an HDMI cable with a processor. I didnt want to spend time reviewing that in this video as it would have really distracted more doing multiple reviews. But im unsure why calling it an hdmi cable is an issue... As thats what it is. I just stated its not something id of spent the money on, but it does show some improvements. Are those improvements worth $100+? Not to me, which should have been clear from what I had to say on it.
S-Video to HDMI - > 150 bucks. OK iam gonna sell something to buy this upscaler, just like you said. I made the decision for my self and I completely think this is absolutely worth the money. NOT

No no, don't use the mCable with the Super 64.
Use the mClassic instead.
