- I get asked "how can I determine this is a solid opal?" or "is this a doublet?" at least half a dozen times a week.
So in this video I will compare the 3 main categories of opal: solid opals, opal doublets and opal triplets.
A little bit of theory but mainly physical examples and hopefully some find it useful.

Good explanation Roy. It’s a pity there are some trying to deceive people out there. But I get the place they all have. Personally I don’t like triplets but you look at the work that must be involved in making one, it must have some value.
Yeah im surprised people make triplets because the gluing would not be fun and the sale value ain't the best.

Any way to tell which it is when the opal has been set in a piece of jewelry and you can’t see the back?
Doublets can be difficult if you cant see the back or sides but sometimes if the crystal is clear enough a loupe can show the glue backing through the face.
Triplets are always pretty easy because the dome is not made of opal and instead you'll see a magnified projection of the opal below. You can cast shadows or angle the lighting to show a clear top.

Doublets have certainly grown on me over time. Some material really thrives thanks to the ability to doublet it and it really is worth the effort.
Triplets... still not my thing as well.
