      I hate almost everything about the prequels (exept for the music, sounddesign and world/universe building....and space battle visuals of the end of ep 1 and the opening of ep 3 (i do hate the ship designs thow) ) but i will love George always for realising starwars at all and respect that he did what he wanted to make with the prequels althow it did not connect with that feeling that was created in me by the OT at all. (To see somebody with great imagination and lots of money go mental making an independent space fantasy spectacle is a sight to behold in itself.)
      Most people artists loose their wild rebelious rough touch when they get older. (some exeptions to the rule like George Miller or David Bowie).
      Technique gets better when you get older, but the fire is gone most of the time.
      I can`t blame him for that.

    • @mr.b9613

      Nobody hated the original trilogy when it came out, not even the worst movie of the trilogy. Those movies did everything right, the directing, the plot, the writing, the world-building, the visual effects(for the time), the music, and most importantly the editing(which is what saved the original movie in the first place.) The prequels were hated when they came out by everyone except little kids who ironically became the majority of the people on the internet 2 decades later, and grew up to revise history and swear up and down that they were never that bad. There's nothing to hate about the original trilogy and tbh not even the most extreme prequel and sequel fanboys hate on them. To make the assumption that it would have been hated by the internet back then is just a way to excuse the prequels for everything they did wrong and deflect criticism as irrational hate.

    • @williamnguyen8663
      @williamnguyen8663 4 роки тому +22

      Mr. B actually the original trilogy was hated not to the extent prequels were but there was a increasing amount of criticism on the movie. There just wasn’t a way for people to needlessly hate on a product. Saying nobody hated the original trilogy is just plain wrong. That’s not even a criticism on the movie. People clearly had some gripes with the trilogy, otherwise it would’ve been like the citizen Kane of trilogies. It clearly wasn’t, there’s a reason the return of the Jedi is seen as a pretty subpar movie

      @@williamnguyen8663 Return of the Jedi is seen as subpar in comparison to the original Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back. That is nothing to be ashamed of lol, most would still put it over any movie in the prequels or the sequels. Obviously different people are going to have different gripes with different movies, but to make the assumption that a collective hated the original trilogy back in the 70s is false and you know it. All three movies were generally loved by audiences the same way all the LOTR movies were. You're trying to suggest that the hate between the prequels and the OT were somewhat similar and you know that's not the case.

    • @williamnguyen8663
      @williamnguyen8663 4 роки тому +2

      Mr. B no I’m suggesting that the internet can be a toxic place. People didn’t like the Star Wars movies back then, it may have had a huge garnering audience but it still has its criticism. So saying “everyone loved it” is just false. Just becuase a lot of people liked it doesn’t mean everyone would like it. Lots of people like the Marvel movies, they’re decent but it’s clear not everyone likes it and it has some haters. The OT is the same way, it would’ve gotten a lot more hate today.

    So, to those of you who now wish for Lucas to return and take over again, it‘s a bit late to apologise, isn‘t it? (If you, like myself, never had a problem with him in the first place, consider yourself excluded from this statement.)
    And, for crying out loud, please leave poor Rian Johnson alone. Your free to like, dislike or even hate his movie, but that doesn‘t justify threatening him online (which I have seen a fair amount of people do since TLJ‘s release). He was trying his best and besides, no one deserves that kind of treatment regardless. Just imagine yourself being put into a situation where you have to direct and write a movie that will be watched by a massive audience. Regardless of your decisions, you‘re not going to please everybody. And given that the Star Wars fandom had already been divided prior to TLJ, it was only a matter of time until someone had to take all the blame.

    • @AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE
      @AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE 6 років тому +18

      I've read all about it... there are millions and millions of fans upset with The Last Jedi and the current direction of Star Wars under it's new owners, all it takes is one person out of those millions to edit a Wookieepedia page.
      The alleged harassment of Kelly Marie Tran's instagram has no evidence to back it up, and it's just as likely that she temporarily disabled her Instagram account due to a Non-Disclosure Agreement seeing as Episode 9 is starting to film.
      "white male fandom problem"... I am not even going to read that racist sexist titled piece of propoganda/social engineering.
      From the Ahmed Best article "20 years next year I faced a media backlash that still affects my career today." - Ahmed Best.
      You can see countless articles from back in the day with mainstream media outlets bashing Ahmed Best, Jake Lloyd, and George Lucas.
      There is even a hugely ironic and hypocritical "comic" that was created recently slamming "toxic fan harassment", from a guy who drew a cartoon back in the day of himself chopping off George Lucas' head with a Lightsaber.
      I've been very vocal in my dislike for The Last Jedi, but I have been polite in that and given my reasonings (absolutely nothing to do with some strawman "sexist, racist" problems, purely writing and creative issues), yet I have been verbally attacked and insulted by hundreds of "Pro-The Last Jedi" fans, just for stating my opinions and criticism.
      90% of the "toxic fans" have been on the opposite side to those who criticised The Last Jedi from my own experiences.

    • @Revilod
      @Revilod 6 років тому +7

      A "toxic fan" is a fan that lets their personal views affect the way they treat others. That includes TLJ supporters who bash TLJ haters and TLJ haters who bash TLJ supporters. It also include people who harass the cast because they didn't like their particular character. In most of these cases its people who disliked the film.
      To say that the media is behind the harassment of the sequel trilogy when I have seen the awful comments on Kelly Marie Tran's Instagram page is straight up false. It wasn't just on her page but on any post relating to Rose or The Last Jedi.
      I'm not sure if it is your intention but you come across as very biased in your comment when you say you didn't like the film and then claim that it's not the fans who drove her off social media and that it was in fact the media itself.
      Your argument regarding who deactivating her account because IX is in production is extremely flimsy. If that was the case why haven't all the cast been asked to do this and the cast of any big franchise done this. If that was true way haven't Marvel studios which is also owned by Disney done this especially with the likes of Tom Holland who is notorious for spoiling his films. Like I already stated I saw the comments myself. I know you don't have to take my word for it. The official Star Wars twitter page made a statement on the actress' decision the leave social media. www.cnet.com/news/star-wars-actor-kelly-marie-tran-deletes-instagram-after-harassment/
      The Phantom Menace may have had issues with the media attacking the cast but you can't deny that fans had involvement in that regardless of what the media was doing.
      However blaming "white male fans" for the Hate is completely unfair and articles like that should not be used as sources due to how you said "racist and sexist" but either why people should respect other's opinions and especially the cast themselves no matter the out come of their character in a film.

    • @AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE
      @AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE 6 років тому +2

      The "Star Wars Facts" page is just a fan page, nothing official about it. Even Rian Johnson stated he doesn't know why Tran deactivated her Instagram posts. The "examples" of the harassment shown on that link are extremely mild. - twitter.com/trekkiebabble/status/1003994187597950977
      I get 10x worse just for giving my critiques of the film online. I appreciate your side of the story, likewise I am just giving my own, most of the hatred and "toxicity" I have seen has been from people "defending" The Last Jedi, not the detractors.
      I think we are both in agreement that harassment of cast members is totally out of order, I've called out Rian Johnson on his decisions, but never made things personal or insulting/hateful/aggressive, we even had a short discussion on Twitter where he came the closest ever to apologising for The Last Jedi (albeit wording it in such a way that he was sorry for my disappointment, not the millions of others fans that likely make up at least 50% of the die-hard Star Wars fans).
      The "racist, sexist" buzz words are just being used to demonise anyone who criticises the film, and a cheap tool of propaganda to paint all of them with a bad brush, making their critiques seem worthless, and distracting from the actual problems being argued about the film and it's writing.

      AJD OLD CHANNEL ARCHIVE your right, I didn’t realise it wasn’t the offical Star Wars page. Either way it’s quite obvious that it was the hate that drove her of Instagram.
      I find myself arguing with people for both sides. If I see someone commenting the last Jedi is the worst movie ever for no reason I’ll argue with them and when I see someone saying it’s the best Star Wars movie I do the same. But when ever I see either of these comments it’s the comments that hate the film that are cruel. The only comments I see that support it are usually pretty civil and don’t attack anyone who hate it. That same thing goes when I’m actually have these arguments. I always try the be civil in these discussions but the people who hate the film are the people who are rude. I don’t doubt that there are “aggressive supporters” but I don’t see them nearly as often as people who hate the film.

      I didn't mind JarJar per se, but thought that he outstayed his welcome by perhaps a scene or two. Not bad, but a bit overexposed. Kids did like him at the time, which counts for something. As for Anakin, well, Lucas isn't a particularly good director even with adult actors (I think it was Liam Neeson who complained that Lucas gave him almost no guidance on how to play his character); and it takes a particular touch to give child actors good direction. Chris Columbus or Spielberg could probably have done a much better job with Anakin.

      TPM shows why Anakin is so important, his strong attachment to his mom, why Obi-Wan wasn't right teacher to him, why he hates Tatooine, Jedi rules, Palpatine becoming chancellor, world building, etc...And of course, podracing and Darth Maul.
      AOTC actually tells a great story (Palpatine's rise to power by manipulation Republic and Separatists, Anakin's progression of falling to the Dark Side, start of the Clone Wars), develops characters, shows us real war, new planets, species, ships, droids, world, and has strong connection with 1 and 3.
      What does ROTS show us? The largest battle in the Clone Wars, deaths of Dooku and Grievous, Kashyyk battle, Anakin's conflict with Jedi and himself, his weakness (save who he loves), which perfectly works with saving Luke, Palpatine's manipulation and rise to power, Order 66, 2 amasing final battles and the creation of Darth Vader and Empire, birth of Luke and Leia, new hope. It is meaning for the whole Galaxy and is the most emotional.
      TFA is a copypaste of ANH without any logic, good characters, with stupid jokes, infinite coincidences, which retconned whole OT: Empire hasn't fallen, Sith aren't gone, no Jedi Order, no New Republic, Han and Leia are not together, Luke left everyone like a coward, etc...
      TLJ is not a movie, it's middle-finger to all star wars fans. Stupid jokes in each serious moment, ruining old characters, copy of OT, not answering any questions, breaking the lore, pointless sequences.

    I think the prequels were great lore-wise even if the way the movie were made was pretty average. One thing that made Mandalorian really great is the lore, we're getting more OG star wars stories than the sequels that kinda wanted to reinvent everything, especially about how the force works.

      I do not follow the Disney timeline, there should be room for both in the fandom. What makes the prequels watchable to me is when you have the EU, and they threw that out in 2014, refusing to allow it to continue to be expanded. Jedi Apprentice alone changes your perspective of Phantom Menace, when you know all this backstory about Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan - taking on Xanatos, saving the Jedi Temple, their friendships with Tahl and Bant and others, fine writing that Disney treats like garbage and gets so jealous about when you bring it up, to the point they don't want to even acknowledge there ARE fans of Legends left. Rise of Skywalker, the plot is completely derivative of Dark Empire, except with inferior writing, and they don't have the decency to admit where they got those damned ideas. It's decisions like this which show that we should never have been so harsh to George Lucas, because I miss the honorable motives he had as a benevolent brand monarch. Disney has none of that. And it's truly dark times for a creative Star Wars exploding with ideas and original creative vision.

    George Lucas is probably the most visionary creative of the past 100 years, surpassing even J.R.R Tolkien. What a shame he got ousted out of his creation, and lied to by Kathleen Kennedy and Disney. They promised to use his story treatments and "make great movies out of them", then as soon as they got control, they said they didn't want to use his stories... What a tragedy.

      George R.R Martin is basically a Tolkien rip-off with added "edgy teenager" themes which detract over all.
      George Lucas created the largest and deepest fictional universe, focusing on important and beneficial themes that have changed the lives of millions of children, from every subsequent generation after the 1980's.
      Spirituality, philosophy, metaphysics, ethics/morality, rebellion against corruption/tyranny, showing how democracy can become dictatorship beneath everyone's noses, or even "with thunderous applause".
      Lucas brought all these things back into the forefront of mainstream society, after it being hammered out by media and governments for the prior 100 years or so, in an attempt to create a brainwashed society of mindless worker drones.
      For those reasons, George Lucas to me is thoroughly underrated as an influence on society as a whole.

      Yep sure, but we also can't forget the ways that Lucas changed the world of cinema and film/technology.
      Star Wars changed the world of visual FX like nothing else before it in 1977, he then pioneered digital sound mixing, creating THX and Skywalker Sound, CGI graphics, created ILM and Pixar (later bought out by Steve Jobs), pioneered digital film/cinema (Attack of the Clones being I believe the first feature film to be shot and projected digitally). LucasArts was also one of the most celebrated video game developers of the early 1990's, later becoming more of a publishing company.
      The guy made so many things a reality that did not exist before him, both creatively and technically.

      He, and Kathleen Kennedy to a different degree, *constantly* twists fans criticism around and deflects it as the work of insecure men who hate/are threatened by women or he just outright ignores those who dislike his work. If you like Rian Johnson that's fine, if you like The Last Jedi that's fine aswell, but you're fucking blind or an idiot if you think he's acted in any way the same as Lucas when it comes to responding to fan hatred or acted completely rationally in general. Just listen to how Johnson practically sucks himself off on the DVD commentary for Episode 8, he's a pretentious man who thinks his work is that of a god.

      Show you evidence? Do you actually want me to link you to EVERY one of his tweets or interviews where he acts like an immature man deflecting criticisms by shifting blame for his faulty creative decisions? I'm not going to do that. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of videos on UA-cam (I see like 12 of them in my sidebar right now) that show the stupidity and hypocrisy of Lucasfilm/Rian Johnson and all you have to do is look, and if you think I'm making this up you clearly are out of the loop and shouldn't have even replied to me since you don't know ANY of the facts. Also a couple of things, first; The Last Jedi sure as shit isn't a kids film, it tried far too hard to be a deep and serious experience and was more mature than most other entries in the series, I also disagree with the notion that the series is only for children. I agree that a lot of Star Wars is unnecessarily taken too seriously by a lot of fans but George Lucas saying "It's for kids, get over it" is just a lame excuse to explain his failings. The movies were always decent Science-Fantasy that appealed to *all* ages. Besides even if The Last Jedi was a kids film that wouldn't suddenly excuse Rian Johnson's behavior, hell it would probably make it worse because not only would he be taking a kids film embarrassingly seriously but he;d be fighting way to hard to defend it. Can you imagine someone going on twitter rants defending The Boss Baby for example? Secondly, I'm not trying to personally attack Johnson, I'm just pointing out the ways he is a bad man because YOU seen to not know and accuse me of making it up. I'm not going to carry on this conversation with you anymore since you seem both dead set in your opinion and laughably ill-informed.

The dude has been a class act with how he's responded to criticism, the only times he was negative towards anyone in regards to the movie was in response to literal harassment towards his friends and cast that they receive daily from fucking losers like you. I follow the guy on Twitter, I've seen him stick up for fans that didn't even like his movie. You're a piece of shit. Reading the comments, I feel like there are some misconceptions here. The prequel haters are not equal to the fandom menace. There are overlaps, of course, but generally it's not the same crowd. Jeremy from Geeks+Gamers, who is said to be their leader is in fact a prequel defender, he said that multiple times. And yeah, I watched some of his videos, though I'm not subscribed to him. He can be a bit too much for me oftentimes. I also admit that I don't like what Disney did to Star Wars. I never go to social media to make hate speeches about it, but I don't think they handled Star Wars right. And by the way, neither does George Lucas think so. The other misconception that I read here is that the fandom menace bullies actors. I'm sure that people who does bully actors would call themselves members of the fandom menace, but the fandom menace at its core doesn't support bullying and rejects the actions of those who bullied actors. One example, "Kelly Marie Tran was chased off social media by the fandom menace". They haven't denied the fact that she was bullied, they denied the assumption that it was an act of the fandom menace, collectively. This is not a cult, where everyone who calls themselves a member is officially accepted by the group or where the "leader" tells his followers what to do. They are just a group of individuals who has the same view on Star Wars. That doesn't mean that all of them are decent people, neither means that none of them are decent people.

      No buddy I grew up in the era of Prequel Hate George is referring to The OT purist fans who complained about his Prequel Trilogy they were a different group entirely from TFM which went against The Sequel Trilogy, something George did as well on occasion calling them the white slavers and even saying he doesn’t associate himself with 7-9 at all and only wants to be known as the creator of 1-6. He literally moved on from Disney Star Wars most content. Putting angry fans into one group and just seeing them as manbabies like the media likes to push is often what average people support because they don’t know and don’t try to think about the details behind these situations and don’t really care. If you really do the research of these situations which I bet someone like wouldn’t even waste your time on you’ll find a different picture entirely. But I’ll just leave you with one quote.
      When you get a small group of fans who hate something, it becomes compounded by the internet. The press picks up the internet like it's a source. They don't realise it is just one person typing out their opinion.

There were several complaints about this from customers, the media and such. None of the Lego specials are made by the request of fans they get decent ratings so they keep getting made since Lucasfilm and Lego companies have a partnership. Sequel products books, toys and such are barely bought and always found in stores where no one picks them up. Toy companies made a documentary complaining about Star Wars’s drop in toy sales around the time of it being owned by Disney. The Sequels are not that popular. The media tries to paint a certain picture but right now they don’t make that much money and it’s the very reason why not a lot of sequel trilogy based content is made. John Campea a film commentator who works with people in the industry to tell the latest Hollywood news says Disney themselves decided to hold back on the sequel trilogy based character projects ie live action shows and spin offs because of the drop in money each film in that trilogy made. Why do you think all the plans for a kylo Ren tv show and Lando show based on Lando’s daughter are not at all talked about after episode 9 and instead we’re just getting a lot of Content based around The Prequel & original trilogy. The Sequel Trilogy is not like The Prequel Trilogy. The Sequel Trilogy does not make the kind of money that The Prequel Trilogy made overall and despite the hate the prequels got they made Star Wars more popular for years to come. Toy sales, books, games and such sky rocketed during The Prequel Era of Star Wars. The Sequel Era is not as lucky nor is it that popular and while certain characters from it are used for Lego specials you see tons of jokes in them apologizing for how bad they were pointing out a lot of the complaints about them in a simple kid like way. I do agree that in the future The Sequel Trilogy will have it’s lovers and haters because that’s how it is right now. The Sequels has there lovers and haters but the fact is people that like these movies are a small minority in Star Wars fandom, at least There were and still are a ton of Prequel Fans , I know because I grew up in that Era. But let’s be real when a KIDS Channel like Cartoon Network shows almost everything Star Wars movies but The Sequel Trilogy that tells you how popular they are with kids. Now they’re rumors that Daisy Ridley will return to lucasfilm and news came out that she had breakfast with Kathleen Kennedy so unlike all the other sequel trilogy actors who aren’t interested in disney Star Wars anymore or don’t want anything to do with star wars now or the company due to their treatment by Disney Lucasfilm the infamous character Rey may return but if she does who knows if anyone will want to see Daisy Ridley be Rey again. She doesn't develop or grow naturally, doesn't suffer any genuine loss that we see, etc. Just a very poorly conceived character, especially for someone who's supposed to be the main protagonist.
      And Rose is probably the most hated character in the franchise, for the entire sub-plot she's involved in, and her idiotic actions at the end of TLJ that robbed Finn of a potentially character-defining and heartfelt moment.

It's embarrassing that Finn isn't screwing Rey. Why not?. Is she a lesbian or too boring perhaps. No doubt that's what us toxic fans have got in store as the twist in Episode 9. A gay wedding conducted by a transgender storm trooper. Disney have butchered Star Wars. I consider none of their output canon. My hope is that Lucas denounces their work on his deathbed. Declaring it to be nonsense and particularly singles out Rey and Rose for the most criticism in his last breath.

    I kinda get the racist thing but at the same time I don't think it was intentional at all. Because he's right, Jar Jar is an alien creature. That's not racism. If Jar Jar whipped out a blunt and started dancing to reggae, maybe I'd be a lil upset. But c'mon, the cultures are completely different. I think people really are stretching a bit if they really think Jar Jar is just a racist character.

    I never minded Jar Jar Binks however less is more with that character but he focused too much on him. R2-d2 and c3-po were never annoying. They added quite a lot to my enjoyment to the films. Seeing two helpless droids stuck in the middle of all the chaos is genius, especially how Han Solo interacts with them is gold.

    Well I'll be honest, I've not been Jar Jar's biggest fan. But I will admit, after recently checking out The Clone Wars series, I think he's actually way more interesting in that. He did stuff in the series that actually had me routing for him. What's also great is they got Ahmed Best himself to return to voice Jar Jar (although not every episode as Jar Jar was also voiced by another actor in a few other episodes). Which I'm glad they got Ahmed back cuz like poor Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen as Anakin, Ahmed also got a lot of hate and bashing over Jar Jar. I was shocked when I heard he once considered suicide. Anyways, they've recently brought The Clone Wars back for one last season and I actually hope we'll get to see Jar Jar one last time before the series ends. And after hearing George say people hated R2 and 3PO in the first film, I think I appreciate Jar Jar a bit more now.

    I don't recall any hate for R2 and 3PO. But George is right about the absurdity of the Jar Jar/Jamaican/Racism nonsense. I can't stand the character but anybody who subscribes to that whole philosophy obviously doesn't know anybody from Jamaica. They don't speak in a manner that's even remotely similar to Jar Jar's speaking style.

R2 and 3PO didn’t have that stupid voice, or silly accent and didn’t slow down the plot, EVERY TIME they appeared on screen!

    I never felt there was an issue with R2D2 and C-3PO in Ep. 4-6. Their "comedy" was just their characteristics and their interactions. Not forced upon. Unlike other characters. And then the movies that followed, for example, Luke was a all serious until TLJ where he becomes a comedic character.

    Toxic media and film critics more like... Is this some sort of sad attempt at painting critics of The Last Jedi and the current direction of Lucasfilm under Kathleen Kennedy as "toxic"? She managed to turn what was the biggest and most beloved franchise in the world, into a franchise that's most recent film actually lost money at the box office, and is in a hugely downward financial trend, since The Last Jedi.

    • @AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE
      @AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE 6 років тому +1

      If by "made not as much" you mean lost about $200+ then sure. Because of essentially being made twice (once by Lord and Miller, and again by Ron Howard, who re-shot over 80% of the film) the film would have needed about $600 million dollars just to break even after all production and marketing costs were accounted for, due to how the studios (Disney/Lucasfilm in this case) only take a percentage of gross ticket sales.
      The trend is heavily downward in all revenue streams for Star Wars since The Last Jedi, check out this graphic someone put together, showing that not only have Disney only made back $900 million from their initial $4 billion investment in 2012 of purchasing Lucasfilm, but the trend is so aggressively downward that if they continue on their current trajectory they will be losing money each year. In the past 40 years of Star Wars history this has never happened, even when there were no films in sight for decades at a time.
      They have literally ran the biggest and most beloved franchise in known history into the ground, and The Last Jedi is responsible.

      They put Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters while Avengers: Infinity War was still dominating the box office. They should have just waited until December like the usually do or at least until avengers was out of the theaters. Like how the last Jedi finished it’s run right before black panther came out.
      By the way, I loved the last Jedi. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
