  • The 40th anniversary of the police riot at Orgreave during the 1984-85 miners strike saw the biggest rallly yet in pursuit of an independent Inquiry into the events of June 18, 1984.
Orgreave still matters - not just because it remains one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in UK history, but because it set a pattern of political policing - and demonisation of working class communities - that continues today, from Hillsborough to Grenfell to the current appalling treatment of people - particularly muslims - who are trying to do something about the genocide in Palestine.
Nothing less than an independent inquiry will be good enough to get justice for miners and their communities who aren't getting any younger, who have had around £8 billion robbed from their pension funds and have to live with the effects of that terrible police violence every day. And if we ever want to stop the trajectory of increasingly authoritarian and anti-working class policing, justice for Orgreave is essential.
The good news is that this rally shows that the Orgreave Truth & Justice campaign isn't going away - and is getting stronger every year. Find out more, and get involved, at otjc.org.uk.
