Basically:
There was a tribe of moths worshipping a sun god, who created them, until the Wyrm (soon to be the pale king) arrived at the kingdoms edge, and offered heightened intelligence, which caused everyone to forget about the Radiance. The only remaining member of the tribe of moths was the Seer, and the last remaining part of radiance was the statue at the crown of hallownest. However, once people remembered the Radiance, she got revenge through an infection, causing everyone to return to their original states. However, the Pale King disliked this, and with the white lady, created the abyss, creating vessels of void. None were perfect, until the Hollow knight. No voice to cry suffering, no mind to corrupt, no body to control. However, the hollow knight was shown love by the pale king, tainting his purity, and allowing him to be overrun by the infection when put into the black egg. Monomon and Lurien agreed to protect the kingdom, however, Herrah wanted to have a child with him, so hornet was born. The dreamers sealed the Hollow Knight within the black egg. Some point in this sequence before the infection, the Pale king shed his shell and turned into a much shrimpier version of himself. You, the Knight, are called back to the kingdom by your brother to replace him. In doing this, the seer informs you of why this happened to begin with. Upon killing the dreamers, the story splits off. If you enter the black egg and kill the hollow knight, you replace him and save the kingdom. However, if you reach your mother and father, you get two fragments of a whole, and obtain the kingsoul. Upon infusing it with the void you were born of, you obtain the Void heart. Killing the hollow knight now, you can either seal hornet inside the egg and truly prevent the infection from spreading forever, or enter the mind of the hollow knight to confront the Radiance, and upon killing them, you die permanently, along with the radiance. If you enter the mind of the godseeker, you can kill the Absolute Radiance, and become king of the abyss. Ridding the infection from Hallownest, and freeing your siblings (including the Hollow knight.) before you do this however, you can bring a delicate flower to the godseeker, banishing you from hallownest to prevent a void outbreak. However, your siblings are freed and the radiance is gone in this ending as well. If you pursue mister mushroom, and then get an ending, you get a special cutscene with mister mushroom, before saying “to be continued.” Path of pain is the way you get the truth, of how the hollow knight became impure. You’re welcome.

@AvocaToast in short:big sun moth creates small moths, a white male comes in and takes all moths, making sun angry and attack everyones dreams, white male conquers nearly whole cave and makes more kids than you can count, hoping that one of the children will be good enouth to seal the sun inside its mind, the child gets trapped in some big egg to help with sealing but fails anyway, kingdom falls and the white male runs with his castle full of other white males and protected by his creations, then he dies, next you show up and are one of white males children, you decide to fight a God like being (Grimm), then fight your sibling in the big egg, get into its mind and destroy the sun, you can also beat up like everyone back to back and fight an even stronger sun I guess, then you destroy the world
