Thirty years ago I found out a development was going up in our back location where there was a ranch. I immediately had 8 trees put in. 2 bald Cyprus, 5 live oaks and 2 maples because we would have had no privacy while swimming in our pool. They grew unbelievably fast and we had our privacy by the time all the houses went up.

A great topic that I’m seeking help with is “creating rooms” in my garden. Screening is a biggie, but also paths, line of sight, focal points, etc. How do I take my wide open space and create something that draws you in and makes you curious about what’s inside?

Creative problem solving. Love it! One problem you might consider is curb appeal, specifically for a small garden area close to the street. We are blessed to have 2 acres in town but the 1900 house was built close to the street in the middle of the acreage. So we have huge side yards and a park-like backyard that butts up to a small grove and a county ditch. Small towns, gotta love em!

As a gardener, I find topics like these so important. Privacy and screening is so important when creating personal spaces. Short story, when I started my garden I created a series of garden rooms, one for reading. Well, one day, I had an uncomfortable feeling, looked up and saw my neighbor staring at me. Jolted, I avoided that area of the garden for quite awhile. My knee jerk reaction was to plant fast growing trees (big mistake) that cost very little to plant but many $$$ to remove.
So, please keep these topics coming. We need them.

Hi Janey, I just love the “Solving Problems” series! What an inspired idea. Could you add or find a place to put a segment on the aging gardener? We are both over 70 and still love to garden. We do need to not have such a labor intensive garden any longer so maybe ways to simplify or even make the landscape safer. I tend to trip and fall and at my age I need to be careful not to break something. Thank you so much, Terri in Elk Grove

I am definitely looking forward to the deer episode. I have lived in my location for 37 years and I’ve always had deer walking through my yard. They have never bothered my plants until last year. What changed I don’t know, but they completely massacred a lot of my plants. I put out everything I could find last year: Repels All, moth balls and other products but nothing deterred them. Very interested in hearing some new information to solving this problem. We love seeing the deer but just don’t want to invite them to a “all you can eat buffet.”

What an excellent idea! I have a neighbours windows 25 feet from my patio and they are taking pictures of me and my dogs. For real. I’m doing a mixed border with evergreens and also a trellis with vines but until they mature I have diy a trellis around my patio, backed it up with a straw screen and backed that up with fibre cloth. I have light coming through but not a chance they see me.
I’m learning how to weld and will probably replace my trellises at the border with metal “fencing” for my vines//

Same problem..they not only eat my grapes and vine, they pull off the tomatoes one by one, then spit them out, they break or yank the plant out. Even succulents. Not even counting the gophers, raccoons, and occasional opossum. Deer jump
fencing, and the others climb. Best wishes for you and your garden.

We have a screened 3 season porch. We used plumbers pipe and spray painted it to the color we wanted. We then used painters drop cloths and purchased a grommet tool so we could hang them from the plumbers pipe. Not only are they great for privacy, but also for keeping the afternoon sunlight from the west from fading the pillows on the furniture and causing damage to the wicker furniture. We are happy with this, as are our Boston Ferns on the porch. This was pricey, but it's worked for the past 6-7 years for us. Love this series you and Michael are doing providing great information for all of us. We are zone 7 in Botetourt County in the mountains of southwestern Virginia.

My daughter bought a $30 shade sail, some nylon rope and a large grommet kit and made basically a Roman shade for the back of her deck that looks over into a neighbor’s yard. Since it’s West facing, it also helps tremendously for cutting down the afternoon heat for the house.

Red tipped photinias thrive in our area. A lot of people consider them a trash plant because builders use them all the time. But there’s a reason for it… they do so well! We had them lining the yard at our last home that was against a busy street. They got huge and really cut down on the road noise. They’re a beast in gulf coastal zone 9.

I wish Michael can come to Southern California because I have a backyard with big slope (approx. 2000 sqft.) going upwards and I don’t know how to make it functional. I also have multiple fruit trees that are full in harvest every year but the animals (rabbits, squirrels, gophers, birds) got to them before I do. Can you do series about these problems? Can you also do a series on plants/ trees gardeners recommends to owners but designers wouldn’t? Thank you very much for making such a big impact in our lives.

I Love this! For 20 years we've lived on a hill on the river with a row of condos across the river, an empty tree filled lot beside us and a house on the other side with a semi-treed lot, the house a good distance from our lot line. We deliberately left our hill tree covered so that in the summer and fall we cannot see the water or the condos because I practically live on our back porch when not at work. The covered porch has a 3' high railing along the 22' length and 9' width on one side. The walls of the house enclose the back and other side. This summer we've been challenged with the new neighbours decimating the trees on the lot closest to the porch, eliminating almost 100% of our privacy and the neighbour on the other side clearing more and more of his trees down by the water, which is opening up the view of the river, which then means people on the river can see up our hill through those trees. Your video has offered some good ideas to create privacy going forward, other than the quilt I've thrown over the side railing to block the view, although it's been a great temporary solution...LOL!

Thank you, Janey and Michael! This episode is particularly interesting to me, since I bought a house in Chico a few years ago and my back yard is right on the bike path. I love it because there are no houses back there and I have a nice view of Little Chico Creek which makes my yard seem bigger, but the fence is just an open 5-foot metal fence and all the people walking their dogs can see right into my house.
The fence doesn't get much sunlight because there are huge redwood trees growing behind it which offer no screening because the needles start 9 feet off the ground! What do you suggest I should plant here that would thrive in a Chico, CA climate, and grow fast but also can tolerate the heavy shade of a massive evergreen?

You guys are just FULL of great ideas! I live in Wild & Wonderful WV, mid-Ohio valley, suburban neighborhood at the end of a dead-end street, zone 6b. My property adjoins a large wooded/forested parcel that is owned by a nearby university. Deer are my #1 gardening problem. They pass through and graze my 'salad bar' multiple times each day. Michael Glassman talks, we listen!!
A problem with why we hardly want to have dinner outdoors during the summer are flies and wasps. You try to sit and relax after a meal but find you have to get up quickly and clear the table so you don't attract every insect in the yard. Buzz🪰🐝kill!!

Our issue/ problem was a steep hill not 20 ft from our back patio! It had a retaining wall that leaked awful when raining so we interviewed garden designers and came up with one that has a recirculating fountain in center then creeping fig on the wall then planting on the hill! It has worked great solving that problem but there is no access for us to maintain it! I have to hire a 20 yr old to climb and weed/ trim the hill! Crazy but we r in an adult neighborhood and will not b going up there anytime soon!
    Love your videos! Thx Janey
