- Welcome Gardeners! Today, Jason and I are installing a river of Sweet Romance Lavender. It will not only bring some incredible beauty to the garden, but will also hopefully get the message across to our gophers that we have nothing good to eat here! 🪻 Enjoy!

If you google image the picture, it brings up an article that states the picture is from bucklers spring garden. It’s says Low-growing lime green Sesleria ‘Greenlee Hybrid’ (moor grass) encloses the bright purple Lavandula x intermedia ‘Grosso’, a classic French lavender with a vigorous habit and prolific flowering. Some turf was removed to create the effect 💕
👍
You saved the day!
Amazing!
Awesome❤
I looked up the plant varieties you provided (thank you) and the Grosso Lavender grows up to 36 inches tall (much taller than Sweet Romance Lavender) and the Greenlea hybrid grass grows 8 to 12 inches tall. Blue fescue grass could also be an option.
Good morning! I don't comment hardly ever on channels. But as my garden season is coming to an end this year it has been fun to think about my journey. You and Robbie both inspired me to start my own gardening channel and I have had such a good time with it. I still have a lot to learn but it has been so fun! So thank you for coming out with such great content all the time. I watch all your videos! If you are ever in Utah come for a visit! haha. Thanks again, you are the best!!
Good morning, Janey☕️ I think the Lemon Coral Seedum would look nice 11:39
Janey you are taking the right approach with planting gopher resistant plants and using gopher baskets. One of the measures I took which seemed to help, was adding Mole Max granules to the bottom of my planting holes. I was surprised to observe in my garden that the gophers do not bother my hydrangeas!! They ate everything around them, but did not touch my hydrangeas. They also leave my iris and daffodils alone.
I don't know what the grass may be, but I think the dichondra may not give enough contrast since both it and the lavender have a gray appearance to them. I agree with another viewer that it would be a terrific opportunity to plant the Lemon Coral Sedum on each side of the lavender to continue it along your path as you had planned earlier. It would be striking!
Love lavender, especially the fragrance it gives off when blooming. 🌿💚
Wow I love this lavender river idea , it will be sooo beautiful !! Hope you find that grass.
I’ve had good luck with monthly applications of mole max or tomcat mole repellent. Just spring through fall, toss pellets and water them in. It’s hydrolyzed caster oil, nothing harmful.
Hahaha great now I have to have some lavender . Love your show
I love seeing Monty. He makes me smile with his shenanigans❤
Gentle Lavender River!! Think its a Great Idea!! Monty is a Gem!!
The first grass I thought of is Deschampsia 'Northern Lights' (Tufted Hair Grass), it is short variegated grass. zones 4 to 9. It is a very pretty grass that would look so pretty with your lavender.
When you put your new fence in put a barrier down in the ground to block/deter the gophers/voles from coming into your yard.
Great idea!
The grass in question to me looks just like Ornamental Sedge Grass Everillo Carex. It's a pretty lime yellow color that works really well with Purple's. I've had it in my garden at one time, and found it at Home Depot.
Happy Gardening 🪻🌿🪻🌿🪻
Beautiful! I just planted 20 plus sweet romance lavender in my zone 6b garden! I created a circle garden and planted it along the perimeter. I have deer instead of gophers but the same struggle is real!
Love your videos Janey! Since the lavender in the photo followed the pattern of the pathway I would have done the same with your pathway. But will be excited to see how it turns out. Thank you!!
I agree
I agree. It would mirror the pathway and the repetition would feel more calming and peaceful. It will still be beautiful either way.
Janey, what a great idea with the lavender. I love it, it's going to be beautiful.
For repetition you should repeat your lavender river along side your dry creek.
That river is going to be gorgous, great idea.
Dwarf mat rush. Love that look!
Jason, "30?" Love it❤❤❤
It really amazes me how your garden looks after a year. Beautiful ❤
We had our first frost last night. Central IL, zone 5B
Gorgeous will be the lavender river.
Love this idea. I’ve been toying with this concept of a urban’isb lavender farm on the sidewalk strip in front of my house and this is the perfect application. Thanks for the inspiration always!!
That’s going to look beautiful.
I think that grass that you just got for the center island would work well. It will be beautiful!
Janey, I love the shot of your Zig~Zag planter. The Dichondra Silver Falls seems to be the same hue as your front door. Beautiful mirror of colors🌻 You and Jason are doing an amazing job🤩
I love your river! I live in Vancouver BC Canada, in 7b, a temperate rainforest. Lavender does great here, too, despite our winter rain. It's happy planted fall or spring for me. It's so vigorous, I prune twice a year.
Thank you for sharing this information. I especially like when you include what to do in a cooler climate. We are zone 8b here.
I love the lavender river! It’s going to be gorgeous. How long is it?
The lavender river is fantastic, it will be stunning next year. I live in KY, 38 degrees this morning, I never have had much luck growing lavender - I'm jealous. Watching you bend and sitting in the ground I thought I'd mention that as I "mature" it is getting a little difficult to do all that bending, etc. I purchased a kneeler/seat from HoseLink.. It makes my gardening so much easier and helps with getting up and down It is so sturdy and I think the weight limit is 300 lbs. 😀
Janey the lavender already looks beautiful, cant wait to see the results after you prune it in the spring, when it grows to its regular height. Great video, love y'all ❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Janey, that looks like little bunny miniature fountain grass, but I would consider some of the PW sedges. I have some of the golden ones & they are great!
Love how Monte likes to drink his water from the holes. 😂
I like the grass but the lemon coral sedum would be a pretty substitute.
Well team work makes the dream work for sure!
Thank for this idea, i seriously think that I'm going to make a lavender river next spring!! Brilliant!
I'm on the other side of the Atlantic so I don't know if it's relevant but I have a carex evergold (morrowii variegata/carex oshimensis 'everest') that looks identical to that. Small growing mounding habit and as I'm in a zone 9b equivalent should work in your space.
I also think your chartreuse green sedum on both sides would be pretty. ( it would also repeat it but in a different way from other part of walkway) brighten the lavender up and show it off beautifully.
Ohhh!!! Love, love,love it!💚💚💚
Love this great idea
My Shasta Daisy plants bloom in spring and fall here in Louisiana.
I trimmed mines back at the end of their blooming in summer half back. They now making more flowers since fall has hit.
Oh, that is going to look so pretty! Genie : )
Well good morning janey jason and of course monty. What a fantastic idea will be gorgeous next spring. THAT jason is the man of the day. Whatever you decide to put next to the lavender will be gorgeous as usual. I am in the process of closing my garden down, over wintering. A lot of my plants in the garage. I have approximately 21,16 inch pots to move. I generally lose 2 or 3 every year in the garage. But a great way to start next spring. Have a blessed day the oklahoma gardener😊
Will look beautiful ❤
I made the mistake of pulling out my Alliums this spring. I was tired of cutting them to the ground in August. After 40 years I was pulling the Alliums out like weeds. I have used Alliums for years to keep gophers and moles out of my yard. I used Alliums to outline each flowerbed and walkway. Now I have gophers and moles everywhere. I can watch the ground move as they dig below. I have watched them come out of their hole and walk to another place. It is disgusting. I have purchased cages and will try them. Do you have any suggestions? I am looking for an exterminator to get rid of my problems.💙🦋💙🦋🇺🇸
Looks very pretty! Good info on the Shasta Daisies. Thanks. ❤M
I have no suggestions for what grass might work for you to get the look on the inspiration picture but my first thought is the lavender is a taller variety than what you’ve got, opening up more grass options.
This summer we visited Minister’s Island in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada. They lined a long walkway on both sides with lavender and it was so pretty and smelled so good! Your river will be gorgeous! Would the grass on either side be a grass like your no mow lawn?
A possible short grass for you to try would be Blue Grama Grass, the cultivar 'Blonde Ambition' is especially attractive, and is available from High Country Gardens. Be aware that the suggested Hackonechloa will burn in full sun in our climate. You have so many perennials that need cutting back, that I would suggest investing in mini electric hedge shears, the ones that have a twelve inch blade. It would save you so much time. Also, have you considered planting a thick band of daffodils along the fence,? They are poisonous, and may discourage gophers from coming over from the goat field. Just plant them far enough back the goats can't reach them. It's worth a try, and would pretty, even if it didn't work int the end!
Best show, love the lavender river so good, 🌼 info great. Texas9b 💚
You could try variagated (or not) Liriope muscari if you cannot find what variety of grass is in your inspiration picture.
Hi Janey 🌺. I love river of lavender in the gardens it looks stunning so pretty and you arranged them beautifully in the garden also I want to do the same in my garden . In addition to lavender I love the river of deep blue lobelia and gaura plant. This grass it cold Sesleria autumnalis . Have a great day .🌺🌻🌺
The grass in the Pinterest pic looks kinda like Mexican feather grass to me. I have a grass in my garden called Blue Fescue. I had been thinking about mass planting it. It’s gorgeous and seems mole and gopher resistant. It’s a beautiful color with a blue hue green all year round. The stats say height 12 inches tall. I’m in zone 8b and mine is about 10inches. Maybe not a good enough contrast that you’re looking for but thought I would throw it out there. It’s really a beautiful plant and drought tolerant too. Good luck! Really enjoy watching your videos. 🙂
You already got great ideas but I thought exploring the many varieties and colors of sedge carex might also work.
For me it's Autumn Moor Grass
You can choose Sesleria autumnalis or Sesleria argentea or Sesleria caerulea or Sesleria heufleriana depending the height or the color you like
Hi Janey, I love the lavender river! 💕 there are a few carex grasses that would give you the look of your inspiration photo and work well in your environment. Monrovia has a beautiful one called Color Grass Amazon Mist Sedge. You might also check out a variegated Japanese sedge or Bowles golden sedge.
Hi Janey, Love the Lavendar River! This grass looks interesting: Little Bunny Dwarf Fountain Grass/Pennisetum Alopecuroides
Looks like ‘Breeze Dwarf Mat Rush’ Lemondra by Monrovia. This is a zone 8-10 plant that would likely do well in your area. It’s a very small grass-like plant. If you can’t find it, maybe try a variegated liriope.
When you rebuild the fence between you and the goat field can you put a gopher barrier down? Sort of how they build for chicken coops to keep animals out. Just curious!
I keep my artichokes in pots , would love to have those plants you dug up but that's not possible too far away .
Looks like Sesleria Autumalis (moor grass) although it grows taller than you mentioned you wanted
I was going to suggest Mexican Feather grass, but then noticed it is considered invasive in California. 😬
Ruby Savannah grass is beautiful and might give you a similar effect. The seed heads are a pale pink color, but they fade to tan fairly quickly. Very beautiful and flowy. 6"-18".
Part 2: I forgot to include that a professional pest control company advises that most gopher trenches are usually are not deeper than 18 inches, at their deepest, so it's helpful to have the gopher mesh lower than they dig. So when planting make sure your gopher baskets sit lower than this. You might want to consider installing a barrier of stainless steel hardware cloth (gopher mesh) along the problem areas of your fence line when you replace your fence line. Gophers love fig trees. I would take some measures to protect your beautiful tree!
Hi Janey, little con is a low growing grass native to Australia that will max out at 300mm.
An Elijah Blue blue fescue grass would be a good alternative. ❤
Good morning 😊
Janey, could the grass possibly be Dwarf Prairie Dropseed? I have Bunny Tail grass in my garden and it has never been taller than 12”. I think the Lavender river is beautiful and that you can keep the pesky gophers away!
You could try a sedge grass next to the lavender. Maybe Carex tumulicola (Berkeley sedge). That’s the California native species, but there’s one that’s often mistaken as the native called Carex divulsa. Both look very similar.
Use society garlic. It looks like a grass but has lovely blooms that look beautiful with lavender.
Blue oat grass or blue fescue may be pretty.
I am moving very soon to my daughters property and there are gophers. All her ground is sand because the neighbor told me it’s a riverbottom. I love to plant and garden. Challenging with all that sand and gophers.
The grass in the photo could be Lomandra "White Sands" Not fully grown for the season, maybe?
From google
Deer grass (Muhlenbergia), right, looks like a larger cousin of some of the Fescues. It grows to about 2 feet tall during the summer, but unlike Pampas Grass and Fountain Grass it does not need to be
trimmed back in winter. As a
native plant of the American West, it needs very little water.
Blue Oat Grass (Helictotrichon sempervirens) - looks like giant blue Fescue grass, but grows to 2 to 3 feet high and wide. Bright blue leaves with tall stems of yellow flowers in the Spring. Needs rich soil.
It will look fab Janey. I think the lavender is paired with something like Hackonechloa Macra Japanese Forest Grass. However, I think using any of the Artificial Forest Grasses will look amazing!!
Found further info. It’s called Matt Rush Lomandra longifolia. With me living in the UK I’m used to seeing this around.
@@VictoriaShaw-rg3qbThat one is listed as 3 ft. Tall.
@@staciejackson7497 is that what you are looking for, Yeah? Or no?
@@VictoriaShaw-rg3qb I believe she said she wanted it to stay shorter than the lavender which grows to about 30” max.
I wish this would allow me to send a picture of mine. I use ponytail grass
Is the grass buffalo grass? It is great in Texas gardens.
Why don’t you just use the lime sedum????
Lemon coral sedum
My 1st thought too.
That looks a lot like Carex remota. It grows to about 8-10 inches height.
I think it's Moor Grass, but early in the season. It probably takes over the bed when the lavender is spent. That's pretty smart
We need some Monty-cam shots one day!
I was thinking the lavender river would be in the center island
This will look lovely. would also continue the sedum along the path?
It looks like dwarf prairie drop seed grass
I believe is call Mexican feather grass
I was going to plant sweet romance lavender in my backyard this fall but then read that it is toxic to dogs. Do you know if that’s true or just bad info.
It looks like Sesleria autumnalis.
Is the short grass a carex …?
From experience you might want use a smaller holes wire. The gophers will get passed the chicken wire. The Hole is to big. :(
It looks like this Molinia caerulea - Ornamental Grasses
or Moor Grass
They may have clipped that grass for pictures.
Berkeley sedge might work for you.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ice Dance Sedge ???
Please be careful because animal holes led to me falling this spring in my garden. Not sure what my animal is but they leave holes about 3-4”in width. The fall left me in a boot for weeks from a bad sprain. Be careful
Just based on the Pinterest photo you posted wouldn’t it be beautiful to take out the asphalt everywhere except the side by the long border and put a grass pathway with the whispering plants on the border! Talk to proven winners! Maybe they will provide you with the plants!
Hakonechloa macra For your grass
Isn’t this a full sun exposure?
Broom fork moss
What about dichondra
Morning
