  • Blaca Monastery is one of the most hidden places in the entire Croatia. Located on the island of Brač deep in the mountains, this place is pretty hard to get to. You can reach the Monastery either by boat or by car. Either way involves hiking, so wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water with you. The hike should only be attempted by those who are fit and without small children. We recommend taking the excursion from Bol town and do not rely on Google for direct instructions on how to get there as you may get lost on the narrow gravel roads of the island. Don’t forget to check the working hours and prices for the museum!
The history of Blaca Monastery begins in the 16th century in a cave where monks, refugees from the Ottoman invasion, found a shelter near the town of Bol. They transformed a natural cave into a church and a monastery, cultivating the land to produce wine, honey, and olive oil. The monks built an extensive library with over 11,000 books and established a school. They also had an astronomical observatory and made some significant celestial discoveries. Recognized by UNESCO in 2007, Blaca Monastery is now a museum, offering guided tours that showcase the monks' impressive collection of books, paintings, musical instruments, and astronomical equipment.
Come and explore the fascinating life of the monks and their contributions to culture and science.
