I grew up in the primitive Baptist Church and nothing was more amazing than the first time my grandfather pulled me into the circle and had me lead murrillos lesson and idumea with him. I was 5 years old and to this day it is my favourite memory with my grandfather and it kick started my love for music
If my Church of Christ had sang such joyful music, I might still go to such a church. Rather, the music in my church sounded as every sour note were cause by insufferable pain. Joy was not permitted in that church. I have not been back in a church for fifty years. I discovered The Sacred Harp fifteen years ago. I do not listen to religious music. The Sacred Harp is religious music that is not about religion. The Sacred Harp is about the pure joy of making music. The Sacred Harp is about being happy. I bet you could go to my hometown church this Sunday and still find that same soulless tortured sin of sound. They sound like they are groveling to satan rather than praising their lord.
@@uropygid there's nothing inherently wrong with religion. Jesus was religious. The problem is with false religions and the hypocritically religious. Sacred Harp is about God the Father and his Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. Period.
“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” (James 1:27)
And am I born to die? To lay this body down! And must my trembling spirit fly Into a world unknown? A land of deepest shade, Unpierced by human thought; The dreary regions of the dead, Where all things are forgot! Soon as from earth I go, What will become of me? Eternal happiness or woe Must then my portion be! Waked by the trumpet sound, I from my grave shall rise; And see the Judge with glory crowned, And see the flaming skies!
I have been looking for this song FOR YEARS. This song was in a documentary called "Amish a Secret Life" but it's not listed anywhere on the internet. This song is so beautiful, it made my week stumbling on this finally after searching for it since 2012!
Sometimes titled “And Am I Born to Die”. The tune is Idumea. Among Primitive Baptists, the same tune is often used for “I Love My Savior God’ (or perhaps just “My Savior God”).
We live in a very rural part of Virginia now, FAR from any such Sacred Harp singing groups. Dare I even dream that we could start a group right where we are, with your UA-cam assistance here...? Hmmm, need to find some books........... Oh my, but I am breathlessly excited, deep down ~ Bless your beautiful hearts for being out there, you lovely Irish you - my fairest distant family, you...!!
Oh my heart is on fire this Easter day, here in America ... I praise my Lord and God for letting me find you all !! Before I met Him in 1991 (and my life so dramatically changed), I had been singing Sacred Harp with all my New Age friends. How deeply I have missed this community experience. I am crying at the revisit here! And to think you hail from where my father's people came from...County Cork! The Lord is too kind to me!!!

My LORD and my GOD, show mercy. Praise. Praise. Praise.

I just found it. I didn’t know I’ve been looking for it my whole life.

Love this so much! I wish there was a sing near me!
I absolutely love this sound!
It is great to see so many young people in the video who are learning the tradition and will be able to pass it on.
