The Rise and Fall of St. Ives

- St. Ives was once the Coca-Cola of skincare; everyone. had tried it and though it wasn't the best for us, we all collectively enjoyed its immediate effect. However, the company had a long journey to get to that point, and a very sharp fall off of that point

The smell of the apricot scrub will forever remind me of my first freshman year boyfriend. He kept the tube in his wardrobe so every time I opened it the smell flooded out. It's created such a distinctive memory.
For me its the one cool girl in school that swore by it
Can you do a video on Hard Candy? Started out indie, sold at Fred Segal, briefly owned by LVMH, sold and resold and now a Walmart exclusive brand.
Ive wanted to for a while but Im not sure how many people know about it (and how many will want to watch a video on them 😂)
@@underskinYT maybe it can be part of a larger video on LVMH.
@@leslievanhouten I would adore to do a full video on LVMH tbh, but itll be HOURS long haha
I remember the microtears issue because loads of beauty content creators and even websites were saying that scrubs with walnut shell (or whatever material was used) were bad for your skin and essentially they were like something you'd use when you didn't know any better. It actually did stop me using those kinds of scrubs on my face!
I think it’s because in the beauty space there are initial studies that tell us something that get really swept up by the public. We see this in both a positive and negative way, of course, but because everything moves so quickly, there isnt really that time to have further research to know whether the claims are founded or not, which is a real shame
hyram single handedly destroyed them with their apricot face scrub.
His review was scaaaaathing 😂
for a notorious brand, their face scrubs are actually amazing for the body T-T
Its quite good if you have the skin for it, its not for everyone, but many do see benefits of it
As usual, I get super excited when you do a video on this channel. I personally prefer the beauty reviews to the fashion ones. Just because coming from the global south, the beauty products are the ones we tend to use more and have seen or even flood the markets in dupes, as opposed to the fashion where all you see is experience it from afar. Awesome video, I actually buy st Ives. I love the lotions, they're a big value brand here in Kenya. However, I've recently just moved to using coconut oil which I feel has really done wonders for my skin as opposed to lotion
Im so glad you enjoy these videos, I really like them too, I honestly wish I could make more I just simply dont have more time to get it together and I dont want to reduce the research because thats really what differentiates my videos imo. Also, the St Ives lotion is quite light, coconut oil is very heavy so Id guess it works better on your skin for that reason
You just gave me a blast from the past w/ the shampoo & conditioner combo pack. Wow - I now feel compelled to go dig up advertisements for all that stuff from the 80’s. The amount of product you got was insane, I remember as a kid glopping the conditioner onto my hair and it gunking up the drain of the bathtub.
If you have it I certainly want to see it! Its so so hard to find pictures of it, I guess noone thought to take pictures of the cheap stuff you bought just to save money 😂
I use their apricot scrub still. I admit, I briefly stopped because of the rumours, but started again. I can't remember if it was because of james welsh saying it was bs or hyram saying physical exfoliants are okay as long as you're gentle, or just because it's one of the cheapest easiest scrubs to find on sale. either way, I definitely still use it for my face and body.
I mean if it works for you 🤷
Me too! I really love st Ives, never had a bad reaction from it or anything. I think people just like to nitpick stuff and complain.
i never knew St Ives started with hair products. I always knew them as the apricot scrub brand. Great video, informative as always
Im glad you enjoyed it! I think most people think of StI as the apricot scrub brand, its by far their biggest product
The downfall of St Ives was discontinuing the Jojoba shampoo and conditioner
Im not sure why they did honestly, maybe to focus on the scrub?
I imagine it's either they could no longer source the jojoba oil or they lost the formulation or formulator.
I think now with the tik tok trend and general trend of a "clean girl aesthetic", everyone is hyper aware of the ingredients going into skin care. I think St. Ives is still seen has a "Girl's first skin care". The second someone mentions St. Ives, the first comment is either nostalgia or "You know it's bad for your skin"
Yeah exactly. Now they are battling with their reputation more than anything else. That lawsuit really damaged their reputation but they havent exactly been proactive about changing it either
Yes. I agree with you both. In the US specifically NYC St. Ives is sold in the discount stores such as 5 Below and drug stores like Walgreens,CVS and Duane Reade etc. St. Ives product placement is not eye level or eye catching… you do have to “know what you’re looking for” to find it.
I used it in the early 90’s I was in the 8/9 the grade. It (the apricot scrub) became harsh on my skin. Looking back it was mostly likely because I over used the product.
Thank you for this video. Such fond memories and nostalgia 😊
st ives just brings me back to middle/high school and how it damaged my skin like idk if they will ever bounce back to what they were before becos the skincare industry and companies have emerged and advance over the years since 2015 and have become inexpensive (depending on which brand and where u get them) such as the ordinary, vanicream (even tho that is an older brand its getting alot of attention), korean skincare, and etc.
It really depends if theyre trying to bounce back honestly. If theyre trying to just be that brand you buy because its cheapest, then they dont need to really, they already have that reputation to separate them from the other very cheap brands, so theyre in pretty solid standing for that type of product
I never stopped using the apricot scrub. It works and it's so inexpensive.
I mean if it aint broke 🤷
This was interesting. Can you do a video on The Body Shop?
Thatd be so interesting imo
@@underskinYTyesss can you do it! I got an advent calendar from them, and the shampoo made my hair fall out
It's done! Just watched it
love your videos :D its sad that 2 liars can destroy the entire reputation of a brand forever.
Idk if thry knew they were liars or if they were just taking this internet soeculation too far 🧐
Honestly I still blame Paula Begoun (founder of Paula's Choice and Beautypedia) for starting the downfall of their apricot scrub and facial scrubs in general. i vividly remember in the late 2000's - early 2010's, Paula would take any and every opportunity to drag the St Ives scrub and preach to her consistently growing followers of sheep about how it would cause 'microtears' in your skin (but never was able to provide definitive peer reviewed documents to support that notion). And because she ran Beautypedia and that too was growing in popularity, every scrub review was completely ridden with warnings to stay away from purchasing (hello microtears). That insufferable idea eventually spilled into UA-cam where it caught fire and well, here we are now.
PS: It's worth noting that during the same time Paula Begoun started her campaign against physical exfoliants/scrubs (with St Ives being the ultimate seller/posterboy in that category), Paula was trying to build up momentum for her 2% BHA toner (a chemical alternative to physical exfoliants... like scrubs) that was one of her brand's top sellers. Kinda convenient.
Unfortunately, there is something to be said about discovering things that makes one look like an expert. I think that is why so many people who are trying to be taken seriously come up with terms or they say they have fun facts or discovered something, because it makes them look knowledgeable and to the viewer you begin a kind of respect for the creator and you feel closer to them because of it. Just in my opinion, I think that’s why there is a lot of false information available online, and it’s not that anyone doing this has malicious intent, we all make up terms for things that we don’t Have a full background on, but because of influence that really changes its impact
I forgot about this brand and assumed it no longer existed but I actually saw their products whilst out shopping recently!
Did you buy?
@@underskinYT Nope, the bad press stopped me using those kinds of face scrubs 😅
@@wordsbygemm all of them or just the wanut shell ones?
@@underskinYT all of them!
st.ives was making keratin haircare before anyone else. they used to have a 3 minute Intensive Conditioner that was popular for awhile too. with the scrub, we have to think what else people were using with it.. some people would follow it up with seabreeze, nozema, oxy pads which all the mint and alcohol isn't good either.
I dont think they couldve predicted what happened with the apricot scrub. Honestly with all the information their downfall seems highly unfair
Been using their apricot and coconut scrub for years now. Their micellar water is great, especially to dilute my shampoo with for a squeaky clean scalp...and so much affordable
Thats great that it works for you
1:34 I think you mean Monaco lol
Oh yes, I did, nice catch ty 🎉
This video actually makes me want to pick up the scrub. But I’m currently on tretinoin, and I don’t think I need it, as my skin is good enough with the tretinoin alone.
If tretinoin is working tgeres no need to mess that up
Honestly their body lotion is a really great formula!
It really is a good lotion tbf
I thought so too and it was all I used for years. Then I tried Aveeno and Jergens and can't go back no matter how hard I try. St. Ives lotion feels like water to me now. No wonder used to have skin issues in the winter. Sigh I sure miss their price point though...
@@nordette Aveeno is totally different as a product to St. Ives, St. Ives is more for oily skin and Aveeno for dry (I use Aveeno religiously - unscented because my skin is just that dry). So if Aveeno and Jergens works better for you, Id guess youre on the drier side?
@@underskinYT yes definitely! Especially in the winter. I always thought lotion was lotion and they all did the same thing but switching brands has made my life so much more comfortable
I had pretty thick skin and at the time i really didnt give a f what is in the product. Then i tried the apricot fash wash for some times and when i went out for a motorbike ride, i can feel my skin on fire for fissure with the air 😭💀
I used to think that was it working :(
I never stopped using their scrub it worked for so long why stop now
I think thats more or less how theyve remained market share
Micro tears could be good for the skin. It's a type if microderm abrasion. Small injuries prompt collagen growth when healing. So, that's not a bad thing.
As far as I could tell scientists cant really prove they exist at all 🤷

❤️❤️❤️
Well I remember this brand product make my skin worse 😢 and It's not cheap for my country currency
Probably best to avoid it then 😂 do you have an alternative?
@@underskinYT of course darling 😅 now I some local brand from my country do better ✨
