    CelloWisdom:
    Balance and flexibility give us more bow control than gripping and squeezing; they are essential to mastery of the bow.

    love this. I was the kid with the horrible bow hold when i first started, and so i have empathy for bow hold difficulty, i truly wish this analogy had been told to me as a kid, it wouldve saved months of grief!

    I was told this analogy when I was about 13 by Hans Nygaard after a concert he did in a small town near to where I live. I named my cello after him, had such a big crush on him haha

    I like the idea of talking about bow hold, position, and finger role through the use of ship crew. Very clever and helpful!

    Hi, I'm aware I shouldn't be squeezing my thumb against the bow but its absolutely normal to have a resist force against the thumb from balancing the bow right?

    I like Robert Gillespie's method of correctly holding the bow, he really helped me this summer. He helped write essential elements for strings. I had the privilege of playing under him in June

    Under what instances is the pinky on top of the bow like In violin/ viola bow hold?

    • @CelloBello
      @CelloBello  6 років тому +1

      Not all schools of playing advocate keeping the pinky on top of the bow. Personally, I like to use it there as a counter balance to the weight from the tip when one is playing pp in the lower half and you want to keep weight suspended. For louder playing, I don’t see a reason to keep the pinky up. So for me, I use it for the softest moments when one is playing near the frog and the tip feels heavy. Pushing down gently with the pinky helps balance this clumsy feeling. Hope this helps! PK

      @@CelloBello I was going to ask if the pinky moving "above deck" was for stabilisation, and you've already provided a great answer 👍

    Maybe don't conflate fat and lazy next time...I guess you're trying to make a metaphor about the "weight" of the fingers on the bow, but it's kind of harmful.
