    I'm 18 and I still love watching Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, Disney films, Pixar films, Hanna-Barbera cartoons and awesome DreamWorks films such as Shrek. You're not the boss of me society! To add to that, I want to become a cartoonist/animator when I'm older. I'm going to university this year in September.

      Yes! This is why kids shouldn't dread that parents are being jerks to them while trying to drag them away from the TV! Speaking of which, I'm sure that's a possible reason why homework was invented regardless of how much some kids hate it! I should've hopped to it and put my heart and soul into it like an angel throughout all the homework experiences I had to go through!

      I know this is a ten year old video I've stumbled upon so I dunno if you guys changed your minds since then. If not, then let me digress. This whole "toy commercial bad" nonsense is super reductive, and also hypocritical. Funding for merchandising is and has always been a standard business for any cartoon. Hell even for any entertainment outside of cartoons like movies, video games, books, etc. The Universal monster franchise had figurines back when they were released around the 30s-40s so this is not something new or sinful.

      "But everything that I've seen on what i consider toy comms (80s action cartoons) is NOT art and is soulless with lack luster content"- Every person who has not seen these shows aside from when they were a kid or seen a clip on UA-cam out of context to make an entire judgement.

    • @peyifte6311
      @peyifte6311 8 місяців тому

      Here’s the fun fact: Cartoons were NOT originally for kids back then. Back in the 50s and the 60s Tom and Jerry, Flintstones, Jetsons, Yogi Bear, etc. had adult content in them when it originally came on TV. It had Fred Flintstone smoking a Winston cigarette, not sure about others. Tom and Jerry were too violent back then. When these shows reran, it became family oriented. Cartoons since the 70s and 80s when cable tv started they are for everyone now no matter what age they are in.

    My father told me yesterday that listening to cartoon songs many times is childish and well as getting a plushie. I don't believe his statement is factual in the slightest. As there are tons of teenager and adult fans of MLP: FIM and there are teens and adults who have a plushie of a pony from the show. I agree with you Donknot1999, you're never too old for cartoons as they are for everyone.

    • @SaraHouck461
      @SaraHouck461 10 років тому

      True, but not everyone is into cartoons. I, for one hand, still enjoy cartoons, but doesn't want too much of cartoons in my life. So Ben must've ranted about certain cartoons, networks, and of course, the 90s, because he must've been begging mercilessly for cartoons that deliberately cater to his liking like many other cartoon lovers in my age group who have been relying on the internet as a nostalgia soapbox over the past several years praising the 90s and ridiculing the 2000s to the point where benthelooney has now gained a moderately massive cult following after being frequently targeted by the commentary community.

I was picked on in grade school and high school for just being different but you know what, you can't let that stop you for being who you are in life. if people can't accept you for who are you then thats their problem. not yours. i don't see people not liking cartoons. hell, i watch anime, so what, it doesn't make me feel different than everyone else. even liking nostalgia from your childhood. you love things from your childhood. thats a good thing. you have alot of memories of liking those kinds of things. personally, don't let people judge you for who you are. be yourself and thats all there to it.

    Man, how I wish that I saw this video back in middle school. You see, when I was a kid I had this friend named Allison who would used to tell me that by the age of ten and by the time I get older I wasn't supposed to be into cartoons anymore and it pained me so entirely so. :( It led me to believe in middle school that I was absolutely kiddish among others for absolutely loving Sonic the Hedgehog especially for typing up novels of him that were over a thousand pages. :(

    My mom has been saying the same thing to me at least 3 times now. I'm grown and i still watch cartoons but not most of the ones today due to them being terrible, i watch a little of the shows today and a lot of older shows i grew with from the 90s and the 2000s although i don't like the late 2000s that much starting at the end of 2007. Just because some of us people who watch cartoons are grown doesn't mean we can't watch them. Doknot1999 it's nice that you agree with me on this question and that you made a video about this. No matter how old i get i will always love watching cartoons. I will always love the cartoons, reality shows, movies, and even the preschool shows i grew up watching.

    Actually it started around 60 and 70's when the production companies started turning to kids as target audience (they are easier to entertain and less picky about quality) and marketed it like that and the 80's just sealed it by presenting (spamming it would be a better term) it as sort of virtual babysitter (unwritten rule of children programing, you have to satisfy the parents first).

    Yes! Diligence is a very difficult virtue to practice and maintain these days! I mean, kids shouldn't be bored out of their minds with hearing nothing but too many words being uttered out to them or something! I mean, my dad pulled me aside for parental heart-to-heart talks and told me to sit still when I wanted to be free because of how much I hated sitting still and listening to his lectures, but now I know why I needed them, and they should've prevented me from questioning others' sanity!

    I don't think I'm too old for all cartoons. Some of the shows I watched growing up, I still like as an adult; others I don't think I enjoy or would still enjoy as much. After a few essays I read about the history of animation, my theory for why some adults have been negative about those who still watch them, is because maybe they think all kids cartoons are of low or inferior quality and don't know that some shows are better than others. While there have always been both good and bad shows, the reasons for why some are bad vary from cheap animation to overuse of sick humor. And it really seems in recent years more and more bad ones have been outweighing the good than ever before. But I'd gotten into a few, certain, older shows I didn't grow up on watching, enjoyed them, and since added to my list of favorites. The problem with negativity towards cartoons from some is due to the bad reputation for the most part it's had since the 1960s. I think if it weren't for that, more would be openminded. I haven't watched many bad shows in recent years, but I know of them from the negative reviews I read about them, so I usually avoid those. In my experience, finding great music has been much easier than searching for better shows. At least now everyone can pick and watch whatever 'toons they like online at any time. What I think needs to happen is there needs to be a channel that provides an alternative to the horse-feathers shows and air only great, high-quality ones that several of us would like. Just like there's an independent film industry as opposed to the mainstream.

    One of the 90s cartoons that I discovered recently that I never heard of was this cartoon on MTV called "Daria", it lasted from 1997-2002, it seems like it's been forgotten since the series finale aired 11 1/2 years ago. Twisted Tales of Felix was one rare 90s cartoon as well, I heard that it aired in the US during the 90s but repeats were shown on the Latin America CN. Remember Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, Seasons 1-10 of Simpsons, X-Men the Animated Series, Batman the Animated Series!

    Anyone can watch cartoons. However, for instance, kids were never allowed to watch The Flintstones back in 1960 since it had Fred Flintstones smoking cigarettes. Tom and Jerry wasn’t a kids show in the 1950s as they were too violent when it originally aired on TV. Back in 80s and 90s, The Flintstones became family oriented for reruns and took out the Winston cigarettes commercials. When it came on Cartoon Network back in the late 90s/early 2000s, The Flintstones were on the prime time slot as it fits the schedule for family oriented shows and did come on early afternoons when kids were in school. In the end cartoons are for everyone but some of the majority of the cartoons are for adults only. A three year old has no business in watching Family Guy, King of the Hill, Bob’s Burgers etc. and any other animated shows that have adult content on them. Yes, you’re correct, cartoons were created by adults.

    I think that concept emerged in the late 60s or so because it was when the studio system was no longer able to bundle cartoon shorts with main features in theaters due to the increasing prevalence of television sets in numerous households. Since then, many television animation ratings came from children while parents and babysitters were mostly busy with housework and/or jobs. Because of that, it seemed apparent that animation was considered to be cheaper than live action output and children

    It wasn't until high school once I started my freshman year even so the summer before I started high school was when I FINALLY gave it up! What helped even more was that I had this junior friend named Britney whom said that I was actually cool when she saw that I had Cheetah Girls on my Ipod and that I loved Sonic the Hedgehog, in fact, she even so watched Sonic X with me on my Ipod and whenever she herself will borrow my Ipod. So yeah EEP! :)

    When I graduate from high school I'm planning on working in Film and Video (especially animation). I loved cartoons since day one and I will continue to do so. My family is even fine with it (they all like cartoons in way or another). However, I typically tend to watch older cartoons (essentially anything from the early-mid 00s at the latest and below). Cartoons are for EVERYONE!!! In fact, cartoons used to be made for adults. Doknot1999, keep watching cartoons and keep spreading the word!

    It's actually quite easy, if you're using Windows Movie Maker. All you have to do is click on the picture you want to use over the audio, then expand the time as much as possible (only thirty seconds). Do this repeatedly until you reach the end of the video. It's that easy. Hope this helps. :)

    00:35 I would highly recommend not judging people with Down Syndrome like that, because I've been exposed to those types of people very often as a result of being diagnosed with another syndrome that calls for desperate measures, which of course is Asperger Syndrome, and there is quite a chance that those people have a heart. As for blasphemous, I can pretty much tell why, seeing as though certain media is supposedly treated like religions due to having supposedly strict standards.

    (sorry, YT character limit) were assumed not to care about animation quality issues, so as a result, producers of animated shows continuously wrote down to their presumed audience over the next couple of decades, and that concept was even exaggerated in the 80s toy commercials mentioned in some of the feedback of this video. The problem somehow didn't end until the Disney Renaissance kicked in, but even then, films from that era were considered family films, which meant that they were

    Going outside and actually spending time with your kids is the much better option when you think about it. I would much rather color with my kid or read a book with them or talk to them about their day rather than sit them in front of the TV until dinnertime. That's just my personal opinion, though.

They know when I work and I get paid, I use the money to get DVDs of the cartoons I enjoy. I know this review is quite old now, but I've wanted to make this point for a long ass time.
    I hate the idea that Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Mickey Mouse, etc, are now being seen as children's entertainment. Those cartoons were not made FOR young children at the time, since they were usually shown in cinema screens packed with grown men and women, sometimes children, but not all of the time. It was really grown adults who saw these cartoons and enjoyed them at the time. I'm not saying cartoons like Looney Tunes or Tom & Jerry aren't for children at all, because they are fun for children to watch, but because of the fact that they are now seen as children specific media by some, they've basically been botched up and ruined by the studios with every resurrection and reboot thus far. It's actually quite sad.

      Sara Houck Well, every decade had ups and downs. Animators who respect animation as an art form create timeless classics that appeal to all ages. Animators who think cartoons are just for kids create pandering shlock that is unwatchable to anyone over the age of 10.

    now i'm 18 and he's 15 and we still barely watch live-action shows.
    we stick to the good stuff, like: MLP:FIM, Gumball, Adventure time, Regular show, Dan vs, Gravity Falls, and Phineus and Ferb.

    The main problem is belief that, when you grow up, you have to lobotomize your entire childhood and accept adult behavior and mindset on it's place. If you still watch cartoons, that means that you still cling on to your childhood desires and thus your transition to adulthood cannot be completed until you abandon it. Kinda like modern version of 'Rite of Passage'.

    I wouldn't call 80's the worst decade for cartoons (far from it) but the worst flaw of that decade was quantity over quality. The production companies only cared about churning episodes to push their toylines (These episodes must be aired in time to launch our new toyline! C'mon, chop, chop!). They had some pretty great ideas for the time but the execs just didn't give a fuck.

    I once had this dream: My family were all in this house, that wasn't my house, and we had company, and we were watching this movie, and I protested, because I thought we were watching something related to either Simpsons or Courage, the Cowardly Dog. Then my dad started snapping at me about how cartoons are for kids, and Double D, from Ed, Edd n' Eddy tried to stand up to me, and my dad scribbled over his homework. It was a strange dream.
