    Any plans to continue the liquid propellant rocket engine?

      I think he works on liquid rocket engines in his day job now, maybe it is true that it's a mistake to turn a hobby into a job XD I can imagine it doesn't feel like time off of work to do the same thing.

    id recommend using peel ply instead of the fiberglass. you can remove it later and it does pretty much the same thing to the tube.

    Nice tutorial Charlie! I find using a foam roller to spread the epoxy over the cloth makes things easier. Instead of the heat shrink tape, have you tried one of those heat shrink sleeves?

      I checked your channel out it's amazing.

    It is a composite once you have added the binding material. A brick wall whit plaster is a composite. Before you bond them they are brick and plaster.

    Cool video and I really wish you would have showed the end process a little more but still informative. I also like the fact that you wrapped it with fiberglass after knowing that you have to sand through that. Does this coming from someone who makes hundreds of infusion carbon fiber parts a year. Great video!

    That seems incredibly easy to do

    How do you know what oz of carbon fiber cloth you need? Im looking online for carbon fiber square tubes and prices are very high. But i want to build a 3D printer gantry with this for a project. Is vacuum forming something you could do or is that just ridiculous?
    edit: by the way, if you posted the materials im sure you would get a kickback from affiliate links, just mention that those are affiliate links so people don't get mad.

    How about a 90°degree part???

    hey charlie we are currently building a new rocketry team in our university and needed some help with composites, would you be able to help us?

    Hi, thank you for this informative video ! Considering you experience with carbon fiber, I would like to submit an inquiry. I am building a folding bikes with carbon fiber tubes and steel lugs. The torsional stiffness of the Roll Wrapped tube is disapointing. I your opinion, how much better would a Pull Winded or Braided tube would perform in torsion compared to a Roll Wrapped ? Regards

      The braided sleeve tube will dramatically outperform the pullstruded tube in torsion. Your goal is to have fibers running in the direction of the principal load axis.

      Try looking at Easy Composites UA-cam channel. They have test of carbon fiber tubes.

    Maybe I need to try this. My Balls project next year is a minimum diameter 75mm M to M multi stage rocket. What launch are you going to, or is it a FAR trip?

    • @AstroCharlie
      @AstroCharlie  10 місяців тому +1

      FAR Trip!

      @AstroCharlie I would love a followup video after the flight with feedback on the homemade carbon fiber tube! If it works out good I will have tontry this for the BALLs project.

    where did you buy heat shrink tape?

  • @suryamani1235

    Could you potentially use this method to make composite SRM casings? Or is filament winding the best way to do that?

    • @AstroCharlie
      @AstroCharlie  10 місяців тому

      Absolutely! The winder is probably a better idea as this manual method is a bit tedious, but it totally works.

    • @shere_kan8329

      To make a composite pressure vessel you need to have the fibers running in a particular direction : 55° from the axis of the tube. Here, the fibers are at 90/0° which makes it a fairly poor pressure vessel.
      In order to make a composite motor case, without the expense of a winder, you may use CF sleeves (choose the right nominal diameter to have a 55° angle)

    • @AstroCharlie
      @AstroCharlie  10 місяців тому +1

      @@shere_kan8329 There's no reason I couldn't cut the cloth at an angle to achieve more appropriate properties, similarly the 57 degree wind angle presumes that 100% of the load is from internal pressures, which may not be the case for a motor/airframe combination.

    • @shere_kan8329
      @shere_kan8329 10 місяців тому +1

      @AstroCharlie I get what you mean, but let's face it : it would be a huge pain in the ass, and weaker in the end because the fibers wouldn't be as long due to limited cloth width.

    Man I really wish you make a TVC nozzle for a large custom made solid rocket motor, be it a ball joint design or a bellow design, I would really love to see that and also it would be an Interesting challenge, i messaged JB also on Insta regarding this, didn't got a reply, hopefully you do this it'll be a fun learning experience

    which material is better for the rocket body; aluminum or carbon fiber?

    • @AstroCharlie
      @AstroCharlie  9 місяців тому

      Carbon fiber is lighter and easier to work with in my opinion.

      Fun fact, I had been looking for that smoke alarm since I bought the house. In one of the shop bathrooms they had a spare alarm in one of the drawers and it took me, no kidding, almost 2 years to find.

    Don't you think it would be a good idea to make a carbon fiber liquid rocket engine because carbon fiber absorbs the radiation and can stand lots of heat and cold like if it enters space? Don't you think?

    • @EPIC.Engineering
      @EPIC.Engineering 9 місяців тому

      And if it gets to hot you can add like a cooling system like on most rocket engines?
