  • The Sanctuary of Montecastello stands on a spur of limestone overlooking the lake.
Its privileged position offers visitors unique and spectacular views: from the high peaks of Mount Baldo to the peninsula of Sirmione, enjoying all the landscapes that embrace the blue of the water.
Built on the ruins of an ancient temple, later transformed into a castle, it houses the "Casa Santa", a small temple presumably dating back to 800 AD
In the rich and frescoed interior (frescoes of the Giottesca school), one of the many preserved is the largest European vote, dating back to the early 1600s.
The Sanctuary of Montecastello (Sanctuary of the Madonna della Stella) owes its name to the miraculous appearance of a "Star" that ended a bloody battle that took place in Tignale in 1200.

The entire height of Monte Cas (more often referred to as Monte Castello, 779 m) was used and fortified starting from 1915 to displace an artillery battery with posts in barbetta and supporting reservoirs, connected by a military roadway and protected by a network of fortifications on the northern side of the mountain, including lines of trenches supported by important stakes excavated in rock and by a dense network of mule tracks and defensive paths.
The structure is located on one of the most panoramic ridges of Lake Garda. The view dominates over a very wide arc of Lake and the excursion is easy and satisfying both by using the paved road that connects the sanctuary and along the most interesting paths of military roads.
Monte Cas is located near Tignale, easily accessible from the provincial road that connects Tignale to Tremosine (SP38)

Church of S. Martino a Gargnano
The parish church of San Martino in its current elliptical shape and size (68.65 mx 23.35 m), dates back to 1837 and is the work of Brescia architect Rodolfo Vantini of Brescia. Previously, in the same place, perhaps an older sacred Roman building stood, supposedly from the 11th century. The facade is characterized by an atrium with sturdy colonnades. Originally inside the church had three naves and eight altars, while today it is reduced to a single nave and five are the altars. The Last Supper, attributed to the Veronese school, other paintings by Giovanni Andrea Bertanza, of the Venetian Andrea Celesti, by Gianbettino Cignaroli and works of the Lombard school of the century. XV animate the church. A few decades before the church is the tall and elegant bell tower, built in 1722. The organ (1811) is, instead, work of the Mantuan Luigi Montesanti; it was restored and modernized by Don Cesare Sora of Pontevico in 1906.

Beautiful landscape but I guess one has to have a private mode of transportation in order to reach here.

There should be a Gargnano-Tignale bus, "Santuario" stop (to be checked). Then continue on foot for about 600 meters. Regards.
