I volunteered as a groundskeeper at an abandoned cemetery with a group of other volunteers. There's a lot of history and humanity to learn about. Good work, Cornstar family.
My daughter found a gravesite at our local cemetery. It was an officer in the Civil War. They left a little flag on his gravesite. My daughter took a picture of it and won a ribbon at The Iowa State Fair. This is a difficult achievement, as tens of thousands of pictures are never seen, in each category. After the fair, she gave the picture to the local VA. She also included a biography of the person with the picture. She was 13 years old, and researched everything by herself. I was so proud of her. I did go with her to the VA. I knew the person in charge. They love the photo and biography, still hanging up. ❤😊

Back in the late 70"s I used to help a couple old friends of mine dig graves,We did it the hard way with a shovel most of the time because of the way the cemetery was laid out and it was an old cemetery .Then later in life up till a couple years ago I mowed the grass for a cemetery.You talk about a huge mowing job,Mowing was the easy part that still took lots of hours then you had to trim,That part took twice as long!! I didnt know any of the people in those cemeteries but in a way they were all like family so you treated them as such.Learned some amazing things from those people and their families!
When my son died three years ago we had him buried in our church's cemetery. I know graves settle, and when we went to visit his grave a few months later it had a huge hole where it had sunk in. I didn't know the procedure, so at our next Cemetery Association meeting I mentioned the hole, which was sizable. I assumed our cemetery had a way of dealing with it. The older lady in charge of the cemetery said "Well you know the family can get some dirt from the pile and fill it in." I was shocked to hear that they wanted me to do that myself to my son's grave. A man in our group volunteered to fill it in. Seriously, if I had to do it myself I would have had a nervous breakdown. I was on the edge of a breakdown anyway, and still am to be truthful. #Paul forever 30.
I got dirt from the pile to level my parents graves and seeded it twice.

Our cemetery caretaker keeps everything filled & looking appropriate.

as sexton of lower white hill cemetery in connecticut, i often encounter human remains during a burial. the cemetery was started i 1794 they tell me. without vaults the remains are hard to find until the grave is in progress. i deal with it with the greatest respect and return the remains to as close a location as possible. i know that this is not the kind of thing that we would really want to do but someone must. it is nice to know that other people in like situations have the same level of respect

I can well understand that you are not ready for winter. We in Melbourne Australia, however, are very ready for summer. Your respect for grieving families is always evident, regardless of what you are actually doing. Great job.
At the end of September I went to visit my mom's grave site back in the farming community where I grew up here in Ontario. She had passed away Jan 2019 this was my first visit back in a few years. I notice that the grave site needed some attention... I thought to myself what would Daddy Cornstar have to say about this gravesite. You guessed it - it needed more top soil and to be re-seeded. Being inspired by your message (in your videos) your attention to detail and your integrity of always wanting the best for families. I reached out to the Funeral Director (who's since sold the business, which back in the day belonged to my Dad's Uncle then his cousin) put me in touch with the Cemetery Administrator - I sent her a picture of how mom's gravesite looked that day I visited. Today she sent me back a picture of how it's looks today - the caretaker added more topsoil, leveled out (just like you would) and reseed it!
Much respect for what your family does with all the cemeterys. My family has a private family cemetery that each year since I was a kid that we have expanded slowly each year. Some familys help and some don't but I'm proud of where I'll eventually be buried knowing that there will be family members keeping it going. Love your work and great job on the farm. Also can't remember if I ever comented on your new second grandchild coming soon but congratulations on another

I have to tell you that i absolutely love the respect, the care and precision that you put into each grave is sincerely beautiful to see. I hate the idea of needing one for my family, but realistically it’s such a need and in that time of grief I’m certain you give comfort to the family. Treating this as a person and not cargo so to speak. We flew my dad back to our home state, town and the sudden unexpected death at 61 hit me extremely hard, my first real loss at 31. It felt like he was cargo at times. Wish we had you. Now taking care of my 85 yr old mom, living w her, these videos mean a lot. I think everything you do is careful and thoughtful including running the top for packing.

You both are so respectful and it's wonderful how you think of everything. You're both take such care of not only the gravesite you're tasked with, but all of them. It looks like a beautifully well kept cemetery. Ours could use some help. With nearly 200 year old headstones breaking, or being vandalized, to plots on a slope, it's difficult to maintain . I thank you for everyone who you've helped. I'm pretty sure I've got relatives in that cemetery. 😊❤
Love the Cornstar Family! I'm from Louisiana. Once a year, we have "GraveYard Working Day" ... Where, everyone with loved ones buried there meets and tends to the graves as needed. Everyone pitches in. We have "Dinner on the ground"...a long table laden with home-made dishes from home. A tearful, joyous, hard-working time. Good food, great company...lottsa stories..

Great video I really in joy watching your alls videos reminds me a lot of my family be sides we don’t have a farm. But we are a very close family. We have always built houses but my grand parents had a farm and we worked on it every summer keep the great video’s coming.
I understand the family wanting their loved ones being closer but; I couldn’t do it. It would just hurt my heart. I’d feel the need to be there and my luck something would go wrong. I know if I lived in your area I’d feel totally confident with you guys doing it. Your respect for all the deceased and their families is amazing.

Thank you for the respect. I dig out a few graves each spring. The grass, dirt starts to cover low flat ones. I have offered to HELP relatives raise their parents stones with my loader tractor. But they just expect me to do it all. Digging, raising even just a cement with veteran’s plaque is a bit of work. Dump 2 5 gallon buckets of sand, replace. They need to help.n
The dedication and respect you show in all your videos at the various cemeteries shows the kind of man you are. For that, we all respect you even more.

I worked at a cemetery once while in college, and when I walked into the shop where they were engraving a new tombstone, to see how it was done, they had the birth year done and it was my year. Like wow, just a kid.
I follow your channels as I grew up in a small dirt poor farming town. Every farmer had a garden, chickens, fruit and nut trees, and a milking cow to make ends meet. What I remember most is the farmers/neighbors getting together, telling stories and laughing and laughing. Hard physical work but I treasure those memories. A different America.
The "ding" sound later model trucks use for low air warning is easier on the ears than what earlier trucks had. The buzzer type was the worst; some of those you just had to get out of the cab until it hit 60 psi. You guys do a good job with your dirtwork in tight spots.

I worked at a cemetery for 10 years very interesting. Dug a grave once and got into a old wooden casket, fell apart like wet paper. No record of a grave being there. We just put some dirt back over it,and went along and had the funeral. We looked and couldn’t see any bones in the hole. I often wondered who was buried there. Great job on cleaning that grave up.

You are so right, DC. The average person doesn't know what is required to take care of a cemetery. I looked after one for a long time, and agree with you 100%.
Our crew at the cemetery I work for uses a mechanical tamper every 2' of fill to make sure its compacted when you close the grave.. Makes for a more consistent end result..
Harvest being the busiest time, I figured you’d be busy running the dryer. Which also has you shopping for a high capacity unit and time to determine the new pad sites.
As caretaker of 2 country cemeteries my self there is a ton of work to keep things looking good. People think they should look like there yards and that’s not possible due to lack of money.

It is curious the differences in cemetery burials and stone placements. In SW Iowa, where all the family is buried in many different cemeteries, the large vertical “family” stone is placed at the near end of the burial plot. Then the deceased is buried. If there are individual markers, they will be placed at the far end of the burial plot. Here in Colorado, the vertical “family” stone is placed at the far end of the plot. If there are individual markers with names, dates, etc., they are placed at the near end of the plot. I know this must sound confusing, but the norms for monument placement is totally opposite one from the other: Iowa: large vertical family stone, the deceased, individual markers (if any). Colorado: individual markers, the deceased, large vertical family stone. The order is defined by from which direction can the monuments’ engraving can be read…
How is the order of placement on the far, eastern side of the state?
I know Cole had said in his video that the vaults were "suctioned" in by the wet clay. Net time try to remember a large air compressor to blow air underneath to break the seal like getting stuck buckets apart.

Death is surreal everyone thinks they are immortal until their time comes, then they feel like a mere Mortal really quick. I cannot think of a better steward of the cemetery than Papa Cornstar.
I'm never ready for winter, but I'm trying to tell myself that I need to start accepting winter more than I have in the past though, because it comes every year, and it lasts for a few months, so no sense in being miserable the whole time. (Now if I can only live up to that change in attitude!)
No need to cover up the stones, since it is public information. However it's a respectful thing you can do for the family. Find A Grave will have all the headstones available in the cemetery. Again, thank you and hope their new gravesites will be closer to the families that they can visit often.
It's probably to deter people from pinpointing where they are. People show up randomly and that can be scary. Millennial Farmer has a HUGE keep out sign at the front of his property. I saw it in a video he did, I think last year.
In many cases it's the only way people can film for youtube as the client states the rules in many places, another youtuber here in Canada used to film his job in a grave yard, his cemetery board fully banned him from filming anything inside the gates, including the workshop he used for his private projects after work . I work on some real interesting customer jobs but at their request i'm not allowed to film their work whether it's on their site or my own workshop on our farm. I had the same restrictions when I custom fed livestock for a company in our feedlot. We are lucky we get to see any of this with many youtubers.
@@super6954 It's a shame but not familiar with the Canadian laws. There are several YT creators that would videotape all the cemeteries in our country, for one, Faces of the Forgotten, he is absolutely GREAT! And he would video his walks and interesting tombstones.

I have the deepest respect for your work here and thank you for being that person and for sharing the experience. I already have my grave, and headstone. I keep telling my family that nobody puts any flowers on my gravesite, so I think I will give myself flowers 😂😂
Thank you for sharing. My dad, self plumber and small farmer, was also a grave digger for our small town. Question: Have you ever dealt with sinkholes in any of the cemeteries? My mom and dad, both, are on the edge of a large one. Suggestions. Is there really anything that can be done? I'm thinking there's not.

I'm really curious were the caskets removed from the vaults and transported by hearse? Seems odd for them to be transported "out in the open" like that.
There was an older lady in my area whose husband died in the 1970s. When her church created a new cemetery, she had the vault dug up and moved to the new cemetery. She died a few years later, and is buried there now, too. Final resting place may not be so final sometimes.

Older graves, some may not have vaults but nowadays you must have vaults whenever there is a burial, coffin or urns.

@@CB.5 Maybe in your area. Our cemeteries here do require vaults to bury urns in ground. Mausoleums, no. If it is to display in your home, nope, it's good.
When we dug graves in the Arctic . We would use a rat hole truck , drill 6 holes , clean the hole up with a back hoe , then jack hammer it square . deep cold hole ( scary )

It does make one wonder, why after such a long period of time someone would want family members moved ?
Take them back to their birthplace. People and families move for various reasons.
The family might have been able to buy a larger space in another place so bringing the parents to rest together where other family members are, or will be.

I am the youngest our of 7...my 2nd brother died at 10 months...mom wanted him closer to her (a different cemetery) dad did not want him moved (maybe he knew how hard it would be on mom) she didn't do it for some reason after dad's death... I was going to have by brother moved next to mom & dad but out of 5 only 3 agreed (another brother had died in the meantime) the law is ALL have to agree. I was going to do it for my mom but it was not meant to be....thanks for bringing this to the surface....
