I had a google classroom assignment and it was to explain what a propaganda was. So i searched the definition and I didn't really understand, i scrolled down and saw the video, and I thought why not. It is super useful and I will tell you what I got for a grade. Thanks!
Hi! I just used your video for writing my assignment about propaganda! I think this video is really usefull for my assignment. This tells you about modern propaganda (commercials). Thank you for sharing this video on youtube! Could I get the literature list?
I watched this in class and now I have to take cornell notes. It is a good video but I did not expect to be watching this in college. I learned this as a freshman in high school.
Hi. I teach a month long documentary filmmaking course to teenagers and just found your video. I think I will be using it to introduce the three techniques you cover. I will stop it after each section and invite the youth to respond with their own examples of when they have seen the techniques in action. After gaining full understanding of the concept the youth will produce three in camera edited videos of their own design that use each technique.
@mrplow8 First, one of the topics covered in the video is Framing and Bias.Which bias, by nature, is leaving out information from one perspective and highlighting another perspective. 2:05. What's left out is key Secondly, Propaganda is a formalized technique that is used by ad companies, academia or governments and target masses of people (demographics). This is why we don't yell propaganda when a NY Giants fan is trying to convince his friend his team is better than the Pittsburg Steelers.
I'm using this clip to illustrate propaganda in my 7th grade Language Arts class. The students are tasked with writing a propaganda essay, and I want them to see it demonstrated in various forms so they know what to look for in their research.
I agree with many of the comments, propaganda and advertisements are inherently different ideas and should be better emphasized here. Regarding the portion where the vid discusses framing, and encourages "doing further research" to avoid falling victim to biased advertisements, lol WHOS GONNA DO THAT?! No one, not now, not ever.
@Zander101084 Techniques on critical thinking are not propaganda because it's being critical of itself. A core tentent of propaganda is to mislead and deception and isn't meant to take all the information. Merely talking about those techniques isn't meant to deceive and lacks the emotional impact that propaganda causes (aka as public relations or advertisement).
@mrplow8, Except that you are leaving out information in this video when you refer to his video for your source definition. I laughed when I read your statement, "Propaganda doesn't have to leave out any information or be deceitful." That should be a slogan for Orwell's warnings. People that work for ad agencies always like to diminish their association with this word;also because of its bad history. But it's ok, since they are just trying to protect their lively hood, as you are.
@mrplow8 That depends if you think that deception and misleading is inherently good, which are core tenants of propaganda. Even if one thinks they are doing good by misleading someone, then you might want to ask yourself if it's really a good idea to deceive someone intentionally for ones gain.If you didn't know what you left out, then sure, it's not bad but really an unintentional mistake(flawed humans). But if you know ahead of time what's missing from the topic, then yes,it's bad. That's key.
@HelenaXVI That's true because partially because he was trying to promote a socialist democracy. But his idea wasn't to deceive but to try and help others achieve a better world. It wasn't until later in which propaganda was linked with the Hitler. This stigma will always follow the term propaganda. His idea of the word would have changed today since the world has changed.
@EeeScape Propaganda doesn't have to leave out any information or be deceitful. It even explains that in this video. Propaganda is simply trying to convince people of something.
Propergander on both sides of a cultural rift. event => 2 sided propergander => If you find yourself in this place you will realise how suseptable you are.
@mrplow8 Thus, if you want to say that anyone that is trying to convince people of something is also propaganda, then you are using the word in a very broad sense and trying to make the term seem more benign (less harmful than it really is). It would be like punching my friend in the arm, and then being called a "war monger!" If you work for an ad company, I can understand why you'd want to believe this because they specialize in BS!
I would encourage you to allocate your precious "mind-capital" elsewhere and simply demand more from your entertainment industry, political ideologies should be conspicuous enough for people to use their head where it matters, making their own decision as to which choice is appropriate for them.
@jacobji5 Democracy is a form of dictatorship. What the group thinks, everyone must follow along with. Thats why Socrates was killed, there is no such thing as freedom nor liberty in a democracy
Yes, they are most likely trying to get people to join their own side on a matter. The matter itself can be quite pointless really. But true friends dont listen to your propaganda, nor anyone elses, they'll know better than that. It isnt erally that useful to have ay other kind of people around you anyways.
I used this video for a high school project as a reference source, so thank you for your presentation!

Advertising and propaganda are different.

Only if you believe it
