  • In this adventure, I check out an old rail line-turned-multipurpose trail that ends in the remnants of a topless train trestle, all hidden away in the back woods of the Cleveland Metroparks in Berea, Ohio! Then, as an extra bonus, we take a look at a rather classy bridge hidden from the world that was constructed during the WPA era of the 1920s and 30's, during the Great Depression. Some pretty cool local Cleveland history just beyond the eyesight of the everyday!
To check out the old train trestle, park at the South Quarry Picnic Area off of the Valley Parkway in Berea. (see link to map) and follow the multipurpose trail (gravel). To find the old stone bridge at the end of the video, park at the Music Mound Picnic Area off of South Quarry Lane and follow the path right along Baldwin Creek. Its a bit off the actual marked trail; just follow the creek and retaining walls.
The map of the Mill Stream Run Reservation: maps.clevelandmetroparks.com/...
Intro Music: Billy Joel - "The Longest Time"
"Bonus" Material Music: Toto's "Africa" (8-Bit Version)
Outro Music: Ben Folds Five - "Theme From Dr. Pyser"

I grew up in the southwest suburbs of CLE & saw some historic maps of the area. That old rail line connected both the B & O RR and the Cleveland, Columbus & Cincinnati RR lines to the Quarries.

I know that Berea used to have it's own bus line and the garage for it was on the west side of South Rocky River. Back in the seventies, you could still see where the entrance and exit were but they've since been graded or in some other way obfuscated. I think that the stone bridge that you explored in this video might have been part of those bus facilities but I can't be certain.

This was the Cleveland Southwestern interurban line. This line was built in 1917 to bypass downtown Berea after a dispute over who (the city or the interurban) would pay the costs for street paving. The second part is the old quarry railroad used to haul sandstone to the Big Four railroad (now CSX's Indy Line).

Valley Parkway south of Mulberry Street (route 237) is built on the quarry railroad bed. There are footings of a coal tipple next to the 237 bridge. North of Mulberry/237 where the road takes a sharp curve the bike trail uses part of the quarry RR bed. It crossed the river and went under Bagley Road, followed North Rocky River Drive and turned west on what is now Depot Street to connect with the Big Four. To the south the CSW climbed out of the valley on what is now South Quarry Lane and turned south on Prospect Road. Follow Prospect south and dogleg over to Substation Road at Boston Road and there are several bridge abutments on the west side of both Prospect & Substation Roads and a really good one south of Hamilton Road.
