Clip From: Series 3 Episode 8: Matthew and Mary are keeping important secrets from each other. Carson must decide what to do with Thomas, whose future employment at Downton rests in his hands. A visit from Violet's great-niece could have other implications after things are learned concerning her in London. You see that is just the problem. Everyone acts shocked and scolds her, but no one sits down and talks to her and teaches her about how to meet, date, and choose men. Matthew of all people would be so helpful in discussing with her the varying motives of men and how to identify them and how to handle herself socially in difficult situations. She needs friendship and guidance and information, as well as a good scolding!
He did try to teach her that in a rushed way when they encountered her in the dance hall. I'd like to assume that afterwards he'd have gone into more detail.
I remember Matthew did provide some education on that when they were in the club, and to be fair most families do a horrible job of that even today. Rose was honestly incredibly lucky; other than the married man, every one of her love interests have been nothing but kind and sincere, and she ended up with a wonderful man.
I think it boils down to respect. They didnt really think much of her before this so why bother trying to teach her something she should have already been taught? It's easier to scold than sit down with someone and have a heart to heart and you'd only make that much effort for someone you actually respect.

@@user1029xspl8dy Yes! True. Though, it took Lady Edith a while, due to various reasons, and distractions, but she ended up better than everyone, as far as aristocratic title, and position. Rose was a beautiful girl with a great, bubbly personality. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

The Dowager always had the best lines and facial expressions, voice articulations to match. It was great.
Rose was such a peach when she lived at Downton that I forgot she was a bit of a brat in the beginning… I blame Susan!

Rosamund Painswicke has never been the brightest crayon in the box. Remember her disastrous advice to Mary about putting Matthew off, and the fortune hunting cad (who was banging her maid) that Rosamund almost married. She has exquisite taste in clothes and interior decorating, but that's about it.

That scene of her at the top of the stairs suddenly reminded me of the older Wendy in the movie "Hook"! How bizarre.😅 I do feel bad for Rose. A steady hand without the dramatics would have worked wonders. But of course it all worked out in the end.

Well, she did have the experience with dalliances with married men during her life, so she likely knew how to stave off a scandal.

Violet was a respectable married woman when she began having affairs, not a subdeb who hasn't yet been brought out into Society. Until then, the behavior had to be immaculate, or at least the appearance of chastity had to be preserved. Rose can get away with a lot, as the daughter of a marquess, but not beyond a certain point. She doesn't bring a fortune into any marriage she makes, she needs to marry money.

When the first time I saw Lily James, I was like this girl is too modern looking to be part on Downton Abbey then she became the new Keira Knightley (who also I find too modern looking) and been involved in many period drama movies after Downtown Abbey.

@@l.a.3479 I don't know how to explain it, Lily has milenial looks or someone in the 2000s, compare to the actress who play Edith who has classic looks or Mary that still can pull off someone in that era.
@@houseoftyrell1544 I completely agree, especially about Edith and Mary's look was more appropiate to the era. I think the actress playing Sybil had this "modern look" as well. Posh yes, but not the more classical look.

Putting aside values dissonance and even the cultural mindset of the time, it’s always weird to me when people in period pieces worry so much about “reputation“ and “honor“. To be fair, today’s social media environment can cause the same kind of gossip, but it’s really the scale that seems different. These peoples worlds must’ve been extremely small for them to be so concerned about things that to us would seem relatively routine or simple.
They were like celebrities, their lives appeared in newspapers. Anything could be damaging. Furthermore, I think it's the values that have changed, not the importance of reputation. If someone has a reputation for being openly racist or homophobic nowadays, that could have a severe impact in one's life.
@@marcosfernandes7324 I’ll buy that last one. A college professor of mine compared gossip to a shredded pillow whose stuffing had spread so far it could never be completely recovered. Don’t know if it was his original idea, but I guess it’s always been true.
