    Great episode for this eventful month. I feel bad for forgetting to include the CAHSR article since I remember initially screenshoting the article, but an upload error likely made me forget it, but then again we likely won't have a final answer until a year from now.

    I found this video to be quite informative! As a Californian, I found it interesting that our CAHSR will finally be ordering some trains in the near future, for delivery in 2028. Also, I like the Conrail livery on Metro-North 201 and that retro livery (which I just learned about) on NJ Transit 4640.
    Lastly, as someone who also began college only a few weeks ago, I wish you luck in your studies. Thanks for making this series!

    The Breda a650s are long overdue for replacement. Even though the hr4000s are built by CRRC, they are much needed. If Metro decides not to expand the order, maybe they could look to another manufacturer to replace the rest of the a650s and expand service.

    the HR4000 may replace some but the A650 will likely stay in service given the overall car shortage. All options were canceled a few years back. LA will need to put out a new bid soon and I expect Stadler or Hitachi will win it who both have products that work and a design thats close for Stadler and already made for Hitachi.

    Great news that Siemens opened a new plant. I'm just annoyed that they didn't repurpose a plant that they already had. They had a perfectly functional plant, with rail links, in Olean, NY. They sold it, and moved all business out.
    It just makes me wonder why they didn't revitalize our plant. Especially since there's a Wabtec plant in Erie, and an Alstom plant in Hornell.

      Union labor. You can bet that this is why they did it. That’s why all auto and heavy industry is moving to the South. They always have weak or no unions. The South is now full of full factories that were packed and just moved there.
      By closing the plant and the opening a new one they avoid both any public blowback for deunionizing and don’t have to offer holdover pay while they retool to start building the new trains.

    4:30 Every time I hear the word "autonomous," my eyes roll so far backwards, they get wedged into my brain.
    Corporations use this word because the average person thinks it sounds "futuristic," but to me, it sounds like, "let's take an efficient system, namely trains, and make it _less_ efficient by making it so only _one_ vehicle can be operated at a time and it'll needlessly crowd the system.
    Lately, I've noticed that futuristic vehicles in sci-fi movies are also like this. A less efficient version of what we already have.

    I know that a lot of people hate battery powered locomotives and think that they will never work. Do you think in the future the technology may become good enough for it to be used everywhere?

    • @TohaBgood2
      @TohaBgood2 9 місяців тому +1

      Not really. Even the Caltrain unit is only a four-car consist with one full car being taken up by batteries.
      Furthermore, Caltrain will be able to charge them under catenary from San Jose to SF. None of the other proposed battery lines have this luxury. They’ll have to make long charging stops at the termini. This makes the battery trains useless except in a few very specific low-frequency use cases. Not a technology to bet your future on until someone comes up with a revolutionary megabattery.

      Hydrogen and conventional Electrification are more practical

    • @TohaBgood2
      @TohaBgood2 9 місяців тому +2

      @@IndustrialParrot2816 Hydrogen unfortunately is also deeply flawed. As a fuel cell hydrogen has good energy density but the conversion losses are insane. It's not a very good but very high capacity battery. An even bigger problem is the fact that almost 100% of the hydrogen used in fuel cells is extracted from fossil fuels. This too is inefficient. In fact, you get fewee greenhouse gas emissions by just burning the fossil fuels in an engine than by first converting to hydrogen.
      So hydrogen loses the economic argument to diesel, and the environmental argument to both diesel and batteries.
      The viable technologies are diesel, which is pretty incredibly efficient on its own on the modern trains, catenary, and hybrid catenary and diesel. Between these three you have 100% of the use case covered.

    • @BMTRAINMASTER
      @BMTRAINMASTER 8 місяців тому +1

      It took many years for the internal combustion engine to get into locomotives and replace steam engines so battery power will take a while but it may never be very good. According to railwayage electrification would require rebuilding bridges and maybe even tunnels and requires track being shut down for the work. Also they said that railroads might not be able to afford it.

However, the Auto Train, California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Empire Builder, and Southwest Chief services will be getting new long distance railcars in the not-too-distant future. I have a theory as to why csx decided to keep the noses the same on all their heritage units. I think it’s because someone thought that people wouldn’t recognize that the locomotives were from csx if they were painted in the full liveries. Of course that’s incredibly stupid since nobody other then railfans cares about what a locomotives paint scheme looks like and they probably also don’t care about what railroad the train their driving next to is from. Even then railfans would easily be able to recognize what railroad a heritage unit is from even if it’s painted in the full paint scheme.

    Hydrogen makes no sense as a technology right now. It’s waaaaaay more expensive to buy and run than diesel. So it loses the economic argument. It’s not ecologically friendly because it uses fossil fuel derived hydrogen 90+% of the time. And that is literally worse than diesel in emissions terms! And not by a little too!
    You can manufacture the hydrogen via electrolysis to make it better emissions-wise, but that is even more expensive and almost no one ever does it.
    Hydrogen is a dead end. No matter how much Toyota and Chevron like it, it’s not going to work. We have diesel-electric which is insanely efficient, and we have catenary which is the gold standard. No one has as of yet come up with anything better except a combination of the two. So now we also have hybrid diesel-electric with catenary pickups. That’s what Amtrak is getting for the NEC. And this is by far the best choice right now.

      California has strict lowest bidder laws for procurement. They are literally forced to accept the lowest bidder by law. Ironically, this also forces California rail agencies to jack up the bid specs to best-in-class so we get extremely good/bougie but expensive rolling stock most of the time. Otherwise they just get garbage bids. They’ve already cancelled a few tenders and blackballed some manufacturers (like SF Muni blackballing Breda) because of this.
      But in this case the Chinese company managed to match the best-in-class specs so they snagged the bid. China has gotten pretty good at building subways/metros. But I still don’t trust their long term quality. We’ll see how these hold up. Probably a mistake though.
