Adam Savage: Help Peter Jackson Solve a WWI Mystery!

- Опубліковано 28 лип 2019
- While Adam was in New Zealand filming the laser-tag dogfight episode of Savage Builds, Peter Jackson tells him of a discovery his team made while restoring a World War 1-era airplane. Hidden in plane wings that were made a hundred years ago was a drawn portrait of an unnamed pilot. We need your help uncovering who this pilot was!

Amazing! We think you guys have cracked the code ("Mick" Mannock), and have sent your comments on to our contact at The Vintage Aviator Limited. He's going to get a reaction for you all from Peter. Thank you!
The good form of “doxing”
The drawing is so similar to the photo that doesn’t it seem as though the pencil drawing was made from the photo and not from a sitting? Right?
I wonder whether its some kind of good luck charm. The Pilot's wanted a flying ace to 'fly with them' into battle..
@@25zerotwoI think you are spot on with that
Amazing to think that when Mannock was shot down (crashing a dying) that it was a New Zealand aviator who was following him up and was able to report on his death - perhaps the image has some link to him - a good luck talisman used to keep his friend flying with him? Keep up the great work Adam - it's wonderful!
Edward Corringham "Mick" Mannock VC, DSO & Two Bars, MC & Bar (24 May 1887 - 26 July 1918)
Definitely him.
Its the exact image I think your right

Yeah that's him en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mick_Mannock_IWM_Q_60800.jpg
I just want to be in the screenshot :)
Hold on. Are we just going to gloss over that Peter Jackson plays laser tag with World War One bi-planes?
lol thats funny actually. Stay tuned for the reveal.
Yes! I want to see this.
He says it in the video, its discussed on an episode of his show Savage Builds on discovery channel. You likely wont see it on youtube.
Peter stayed on the ground and watched the dogfight. but Adam was a gunner on one of the planes.
@@CarlWiles Damn...they're on the discovery website but you need a tv subscription. lolnope
If you guys haven't seen it yet, definitely check out Peter Jackson's documentary on WW1 called They Shall Not Grow Old. It was definitely worth the watch and eye opening
Great documentary. Also, if you have the time, check out Dan Carlin's "Blueprint for Amregeddon".
This is a pencil sketch of the photo posted to Edward Corringham "Mick" Mannock, Wiki page. Every angle and wrinkle is carefully sketched in exactly. From his history, this might have been done by a fellow squad member after Mick crashed during a dog fight, as a tribute to another lost flyer, allowing him to continue flying with his squadron. It might also have been done as a talisman by another flyer wishing that maybe some of Mick's luck and ability might transfer over. Either way (or any other way, for that matter), to find it after 100 years is something special. It brought back a few memories to me of my grandfather. He didn't like to talk about it too much, but he did mention that he was in the US navy and actually worked as a diver... the old kind that wore lead boots and a copper helmet breathing air pumped from the surface. The greatest pity is that 'The Great War' proved not to be the last one.

its unlikely a pilot would put a picture of himself inside the wing of a plane, it might have been a superstitious squad mate creating a memorial for his friend.
Connection with New Zealand: On 26 July, Major Mannock offered to help a new arrival, Lt. Donald C. Inglis from New Zealand, obtain his first victory. After shooting down an enemy LVG two-seater behind the German front-line, Mannock is believed to have dived to the crash site to view the wreckage, seemingly breaking one of the unwritten rules of fellow pilots. In consequence, while crossing the trenches the fighters were met with a massive volley of ground-fire. The engine of Mannock's aircraft was hit
and immediately caught fire..
you need to get this image to the front page of reddit

The Britosh flying ace, would be a hell of a plane to find, but almost to good to be true
For sure, no doubt.
The sketch shows a moustashe which was not the usual look for Mick Mannock. Not hard to grow and remove a stashe, but so far I have seen no photo of Mannock with a moustashe.
honestly i thought it was just it was just bias but the face matches up but what sells it for me is the way the tie is positioned it doesn't seem stranded to me. wow that was fast be i can't help but feel we're being trolled. o-o
Wow, Peter Jackson is the Jay Leno of WWI planes :-)
Actually he is one step better. Jay just collects and restores cars.
Peter not only collects and restores WWI aircraft but owns a company that makes arguably some of the best plastic kits of WWI aircraft in 1/32 scale.

Peter Jackson also makes model planes. His company "Wingnut Wings" makes THE BEST 1/32 scale model aircraft. They only make WW1 aircraft (though there are is one or two "post-war" aircraft in the range - "post-war" indicating how soon after WW1 they were manufactured. Sir Peter laser measures every existing original WW1 aircraft, as well as those he has meticulously manufactured from original plans, and scales it down to 1/32 scale. The kits are superb.
So pleased to see that you found his identity. My Great Grandad flew bombers in WW2 and sadly there's no records of him so I hope this was of some comfort to his family that he wasn't forgot!
Probably someone wanted to have Mannock as a "wingman", so they made a drawing from the photo and put it in their plane's wing. Literalist WWI voodoo. :P
The drawing is close enough to Mannock's photo that I'm surprised an automated image similarity search didn't match it (I assume Peter tried that).
I think the people who are in the tested crew could do a show or series where they just go around solving popular/common known problems and issues of different jobs/careers/systems/designs. There’s enough different collective expertise to where a solution that is perfect will arise or a spectacular fail, either way hella entertaining

this makes me so happy, what a wonderful discovery ! this is the kinda history i love
Honestly, most if not all regiments of british commonwealth militaries have meticulous records and often archivists to manage them. You should consider tracking down the regiment using the markings on the plane, and his uniform in the drawing and ask them to do a little digging based on the portrait. It's possible they could find it for him.
S.E.5. aircraft never made it outside of Britain so it has to be a British man.
I looked at the picture and said Mick Mannock. He is the top RAF ace in history, so it wasn’t hard.
You and Tory were fantastic together BTW - really entertaining! would love to see you two work together on more stuff. Maximum respect to all co-workers past and present but you and Tory? you've got chemistry!
I met Tory recently and I got the impression that he's geekier than he lets on. When Adam and Tory get together the fandom would be strong in that place.

If it isn't that fellow, thats certainly the portrait that drawing is based off of. The tie, and medals are a direct match. This might have been 'traced' via projector.

I can totally see some pilots putting a sketch of him in their planes for good luck.
That was quick! Ok, this is most certainly the basis for the drawing.
What an amazing story. Here's hoping that someone will recognize the young man in the portrait.
Fabulous attempt. I hope someone knows and comes forward.
Peter Jackson's gotta exactly who Mick Mannock is and this is just a clever way to get people to look up and celebrate this guy who died just over 101 years ago 26th July 1918.
AKA Colin McKenzie.

That's my great great grandad....Bob. Grandad Bob always said I could have his plane after he passed away.

Fascinating. Gonna come back here to follow the development.
well. I just saw this and was going to go try and see if I couldn't at least narrow down his unit, only to see that it's pretty well solved. Brilliant work folks. I tip my hat to you all.
when looking at old military photos, I usually have the impression that the person looks like everybody's grandpa (in the matching race, of course)
That drawing was taken from the picture, i.e., the picture was the subject, not the man. I copied the closing image of this video and overlaid it on a photograph of Mick found on Wikipedia. The eyes match perfectly!
WW1 air lazertag? This is the sport I've been looking for all my life!
I am watching season 2 of the expanse. And guess who I saw!?!?!
Great job Savage! I loved seeing you! Sorry your ship got blown to pieces.
I find it hard to believe that Peter Jackson didn't immediately recognise that as Mick Mannock!
this was solved so fast it seems like a set up lol
Because it is : )
But it got you looking up old WW1 aces didn’t it? Which was probably their goal.
How many of you read about Mick’s story? I know I did. What did most of you think about him?
Seeing Peter Jackson and Adam Savage in the same frame is overwhelming.
I say Peter Jackson should have a world-renowned artist paint this man's drawing as Nose Art! How awesome would that be, after this drawing survived 100 years of war, neglect, and mother nature; to then be found and painted on the restored plane where it was hidden for a century! Please make this happen!!!!
i'm curious if a facial recognition software would be able to get a simple face structure of the drawing and have it compare it to archive photos
Another fun thing I found is that Edward Corringham "Mick" Mannock flew with No. 74 Squadron RAF witch flew S.E.5a the plane that i belive Adam and Peter are infront of in the video and 26 July 1918 Mannock offered to help Donald Inglis from New Zealand. shoot down an enemy Mannock dived to the crash site to view the crash while crossing the trenches the fighters were met with gun fire. Mannock's aircraft was hit and shortly after the plane crashed
I don't for a second believe that PJ and his team didn't know exactly who that was - Mannock VC.
They absolutely didn't. Hence this video.
That’s really cool about the New Zealand connection and that the anniversary of Mannock’s death just passed. That’s great Peter now has an object associated with such a famous pilot. I’m sure he knows about some pilots even if he doesn’t seem to know anything about Mannock. Too bad he doesn’t have any resources other than asking the internet to help him in this kind of situation. Seems unwieldy.
In the 90ties there was a series Reaching for the Skies. I taped them and rewatched the episode about dogfights in WW1. There I saw major Mick Mannock. I thought when I get a son I will give him the name Mick. So it happened. Now they found another portrait from him. I told my son and finds it a cool story. They have the same good looks☺
Here's something freaky... His best friend was flying with him and witnessed his plane go down. That friend was a New Zealand flier, Lt. Donald Inglis. Jackson's plane could very well have been the one flown by his friend from New Zealand. Can't you imagine him putting a picture of his flying buddy in his wing?
I was half hoping it would be a stick figure drawing
Pilot is Mick Mannock.
This.... this is what is amazingly awesome about the internet.
Of course this shows up on my feed 3 weeks later. Imagine for a moment, the artist and Mick. They could never dream that so many people would see this picture one hundred years later and become obsessed with it's origins.
Colonel William Bishop?
Anyone else getting nervous watching Pete swing his cup of coffee around in front of the plane ?
The planes fly in clouds and some rain and oil and fuel smoke from their targets.. i doubt its an issue. Fabric is coated and sealed
It's tea. Though one shouldn't be nervous if they've seen what he does while directing a movie (behind the scenes footage on the Hobbit shows him running full speed down a slope of gold coins and not spilling a drop).
That would be tea!
Do we know it's tea, or are we just guessing.....?
@@osg1385 It's always tea, that's Peter's constant in life.
I recommend contacting the Army Air Corps Museum at Middelwallop as he does have Royal Artillery colla badges and the RFC worked alongside the Royal Artillery.
I had no idea about peter Jackson's passion for ww1 until i saw his film "They Shall not Grow Old" and my god what a great film and a passionate historian. If you haven't seen this movie i highly recommend it. It was easily the most awe inspiring, somber, and beautiful movie ive ever seen.

I would LOVE to hear the story behind the pilot and this airplane!
What an awesome sketch
I have no idea who the man is. I think I figured out a few irrelevant details about the drawing though, entirely speculation. If you don't like that sort of thing, fair enough, skip past.
For reference, I will refer to left and right by the man in the painting's left and right and will say when I am doing so. I recommend pulling up the full res version from the description.
For one, I believe this is a portrait. This could have been drawn by the man himself, but the thing that gives away that it's been drawn by somebody else is the reflection in the right eye of the man. As you can see, the reflection is split in two, seemingly right down the middle of the reflection. This gives me the impression that the artist was standing directly in-front of him, blocking some of the light. That's probably a really obvious thing to point out. The artist was right handed, and we know because of the direction in which the pencil strokes start and end. For a clearer view of this, look under the man's nose to his left. An other observation I have made is in the man's left eye. The reflection is different. Now of course, reflections change shape as you curve them around a curved object like an eye, but the shadow is far larger. This makes me think that after drawing the right eye; presumably first, the artist then leaned in to draw the left one, blocking more of the light out. Other interesting observations include the drawing of the RFC badge on his left side, which of course he would have, but I find it quite amazing to see nonetheless. I have suspicion the photo was either taken outside in the evening or the morning due to the fairly low angle of the light, and the amount of glow on the less lit side of his face, which would make sense as around 6PM and 6AM are known to photographers as being the "Golden hours" in which everything looks way better in photos due to lighting conditions (As far as my memory serves).
It's not a crazy idea that perhaps they thought the same about it with drawing portraits. I mean without a camera, drawing it is probably the best way to accurately re-create it.
That again is probably an obvious observation and would likely be figured out with a single google search.
The portrait is sun-bleached at the base and top, and the almost perfect lines lead me to think that perhaps the artist kept it in a sketchbook that wasn't quite large enough to fit it for a while before stowing it in the aircraft wing. For the reason that I speculate that perhaps a relative or friend had drawn it a short while beforehand, and may have stored it in the wing a few months later.
Anyway that was my take on it. I really hope we can find the man in the depiction, and also find out who drew it.
So it turns out I was wrong. This was a drawing made from a photo as this is said to be Edward Corringham "Mick" Mannock, a world war one ace pilot with 61 aerial victories by his death. Now knowing that information I know that the reflection in his eyes is in fact the camera, and that the second eye was simply drawn slightly incorrectly. The lighting is good because it was taken by a photographer, and I was entirely incorrect lol. Still, I'd like to know who drew it and when.
Any details on the plane itself ? model/make/serial/dates ? could help narrow it down
There's no certainty that the pilot in the artwork necessarily flew that particular plane. May have been a friend of the pilot or perhaps a secret lover. Many variables we can't dismiss.
@@ZachsMind yeah but like different models and stuff would be manufactured and repaired in different places so it could narrow down what corps or what even was stationed there.

Would it be possible for Mr Jackson to tell us the number of the aircraft? With a serial or reg number it might be possible to trace it back to its original squadrons and then use the Army and pilot rumour sites (arrse.co.uk and pprune) to track down more information.
Would there be any number on the wing? I'm pretty sure he said it was only the wing that they found.

Unfortunately I don't know who the pilot is. But the greatest day I ever had working at a movie theater for 6.5 years was when a WWII pilot came to see Flyboys and told me that he had been trained by the guys the movie was based off of. We talked for twenty minutes before his movie and another half an hour after. It's been over 12 years, but the memory still brings a smile to my face!
While this is interesting, it reminded me of the time I was researching the Red Baron. I then discovered that not only was WOP may ( Wilfrid Reid ) was from the same city as me, was from Canada, and he also went to one of the same Highschool school as I did. Although I am far younger :)
I love these sorts of connections to history!
Maybe some AI facial recognition software could scan a pile of squadron photos from that era ?
Hopefully it would narrow down the search ?
Crowd sourcing already cracked it.

So, if the image is of Edward Corringham "Mick" Mannock VC, DSO & Two Bars, MC & Bar (24 May 1887 - 26 July 1918) (as seems to be the case from other comments here) and seems to have been made from a photograph, not real life - is it possible this was a sort of talisman put into the plane for good luck? Mannock was a fighter ace and highly decorated - might he have been a celebrity of sorts? Or, might his image have been carried on / in planes after his death as a tribute to him? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mick_Mannock
Isn't he Mick Mannock?
That is amazing, it does look just like Mick Mannock! Wow
I've never watched this channel before but this video was excellent. And I was going to say The British War Museum should know who the pilot was but I think Chris Boxell already solved the mystery.
When did Peter get fat again? I thought he lost a bunch of weight?
Life’s hard. lol
He's not been running between stage sets and locations working on a Middle Earth film for a few years. No wonder he's a bit out of shape 😂
Got fat very easy. The trick is to exlbit a coordinated hand movement bearing food to mouth. Set the controls to full speed. A common new zealand habit
The stress of The Hobbit trilogy sabotaged his weight.
Its Mick Mannock VC
Dr Toboggan nothing like him
Seriously? Google his name.
If that particular S.E.5a's history is known, I recommend checking the squadrons it served with: Mannock commanded a Flight in No.74 Squadron RFC and was then promoted to command No.85. A hero unknown to the public at large until after his death, he was already one to the men whom he'd commanded long before he went down to ground fire on 26 July 1918 - and I think one of them, most likely a ground crewman or repairer with access to the aircraft, made and concealed the drawing.
I wish I was able to say to my buddies, "Hey, let's go play laser tag in my squadron of collector planes."
Peter is seriously out of shape. Can’t see him living much longer
Jackson doesn't look very healthy unfortunately
No matter how many times I requested they would never try and bust the myth of Richard Gere and the gerbil
what a neat find!!!
Could be a luck charm, or luck like others have commented. But if there's hardly any wings left, who knows how many other pilots did this, for whatever reason? Amazing.
As an Illustrator it I have to agree it looks like William Avery Bishop doing a side by side it pretty much matches Bishop
Royal flying corps badge and artillery corps badges. That could mean this was early on in the days of the war, as the royal flying corps didn’t become the Royal Air Force until nearly the end of the war (which came with a badge change etc). Also the artillery badges could possibly indicate that he was part of the observers division of the royal artillery, checking enemy positions, and spotting from the air.
Yeah Mannock would be my guess too. He was charismatic leader, so perhaps his pilots sketched that in his honor. Or perhaps that was his SE5. Wouldn't that be crazy! That's a damn good sketch!
Load it in to facebook and see if the Facial Recognition system tags it with anyone.
If a descendant of the pilot has similar enough features, it might narrow it down to the correct family.
I agree, with other comments that it could be Edward Corringham "Mick" Mannock. I also agree that Peter Jackson must almost certainly know of Mannock as he was one of the most decorated men in the British Army, a Victoria Cross recipient, and the 5th highest scoring pilot of the war. Has he discounted Mannock? Or is it an elaborate way or commemorating him on the 101st anniversary of his death?
I just assumed filthy lucre was involved.
If the air craft has any serial numbers on it. You could potentially take it to war archives in Britain, find out who flew the plane and cross reference that portrait with any pictures of the man or men who flew the aircraft.
So much respect for people like Peter. Makes some money in their life and use it for something greater than the individual. In this case, preserving extremely rare First world war aircraft. When I see someone driving around London in a gold plated Lamborghini who looks like he's been booted through the Gucci store, It's incredibly sad in comparison.
That's a nice portrait.
i asked my dad about this as he loves military planes and he said to contact the RAF museums at Hendon or Cosford.
It would have been awesome if when you unrolled the picture it was a Charles Shultz drawing of Snoopy piloting his doghouse into battle against the Red Barron.
Shared it out on my Facebook book here in U.K. If I hear anything back I'll let you know.
