  • USC and Lincoln Riley are known for having elite QBs every year. The question heading into 2025 is, does USC have one of the top 10 QBs returning? I take a look at the current situation and compare it against USC's schedule.
In the second segment, I have some recruiting news, plus, where the coaching staff is emphasizing their time and who are getting offers.
Both of the Trojan basketball teams won on the same night; The Women of Troy beat up Purdue on the road winning their 14th game in a row. Meanwhile, the men won on the road against Nebraska. It's their 3rd win on the road in conference and both teams take on UCLA next.

Longstreet is definitely going to play this year at sometime! As far as Stars go they don't mean anything once you get to College butt some 5⭐'s are the real deal. So I think u just have to evaluate each player and hope you hit the nail on the Head✌️

If nothing else, I really HOPE they have special packages for HL to come in on 3rd downs where the RPO keeps the defense from just stacking the box…JM may have a strong arm, but so far I’m not impressed with his running ability…

Only problem with Maiava is he panics too early and chucks the ball up. It doesn't help LR gets away from running the Football when SC is averaging 6-7 yards a run.

I think LR has his guy but he has no game experience yet. I think HL is going to be a home run hit. The verdict is out still. Maiava needs to start fast and hit it hard from the get go. If he can show he’s made the necessary growth changes he might get through the year. If not Longstreet will be waiting in the wing. Excited about this position to see how it unfolds.

  • @ernestogalvan-ib7bt

The QB position is up for grabs. You don’t pay HL all that money to sit and risk losing him if he earns the job.
Maiva will still grow. I haven’t given up on him like we did Miller. Though I understand the Miller situation we need to make playoff’s this year.

Respectfully in my opinion Maiava is a #2 QB at best..
Riley is the best in College Football at what he does with QBs and Offense but the QB has to have the intangibles and Maiava doesn’t.
There’s 3 major attributes a QB has to have….. 1. Is his decision making good… 2. Is he an accurate thrower of the football… 3. Can he process the game…
I would say no to all 3 and those 3 are just the base we aren’t talking about efficiency, does he protect the ball or is he turnover prone… is he cerebral… does he read defenses well… can he throw wrs open…. Does he make anticipatory throws… does he play well in the pocket when the pocket is muddy does he perform and continue to be accurate and keep his eyes down the field….. I would say No to everything I just mentioned and as good as Riley is he can’t make someone into something he isn’t…..

Maiava's body of work at USC thus far has been unimpressive. He has the physical tools, but that hasn't translated to on field success or garnered much confidence from the fan base, and rightfully so.

I’m not one of those USC fans that is impressed with Jaden Maiava. He seems to get rattled and makes dangerous throws, resulting in too many interceptions. He is just another Miller Moss in my eyes. I am hopeful that Hussan Longstreet will mature quickly and step up to be QB1.

    • @TrojansFirst
      @TrojansFirst 15 днів тому

You need more patience. It was his first year in a new system. Remember Carson Palmer? The excuse as why he wasn’t performing was having 3 OC’s in 3 years. Once he had the same OC for a second year he put it together. Let’s give Maiava the same opportunity.

Not necessarily “another” Miller Moss, their respective games aren’t similar and he doesn’t deserve to be blamed for all the coaching lapses (time mismanagement). Lincoln should’ve have taken more of the blame for Miller not continuing to develop over the course of the season instead of just tossing him out. Play calling and route combinations were not always friendly to young QBs and building confidence (plays taking too long to develop/no outlets). Miller is a great Trojan and certainly doesn’t deserve all the flak he gets. He was never going to be all world. Just my opinion. Fight on

Even though I’ve been a fan for 45 years, I’m still learning. What I learned from the Moss situation was to watch the rankings of draft eligible QBs. Moss started high on Kiper’s preseason list, then started dropping fast. The big boys in the NFL draft rooms tell you what they really think about a prospect. I neither loved or hated Moss- but GMs saw a weak arm, no mobility, most balls he threw wobbled, etc.
To be a legitimate title contender (not just playoffs), a program needs a legit first or second rounder at QB. Daniel’s and Williams are great, but when I watched Pennix at UW, it was clear he was elite. Putting fandom aside, neither Moss or Maiva have that. I work in banking so what do I know? That’s why I defer to the draft guys that speak with GMs and get their candid opinion.

If stubborn as a mule Riley balanced his offense with a strong run game, he wouldn’t have to worry about having a world beating QB.
Almost every team in the playoffs has a great run game. Last year we could probably have rattled off a few more wins and maybe been a fringe playoff team if Riley would even have just run consistently in the red zone. Joyner was criminally underutilized.

    1. Jayden Maiava is 11-5 as a starter. (11-5) in the NFL makes you a multi-million dollar franchise QB in the NFL with a shoe deal.
    2. Jayden Maiava is a Sophomore learning a completely different offense.
    3. The two QB's in the NC game were both Sr's. Will Howard is a 23 year old 5th year SR.
Riley Leonhard is a 22 year old true Sr.
    4. Will Howards 1st full season as a starter stats: 1633 yards 15 td's 4 ints 59% 149 rating. Jayden Maiava's 3085 17 Td's 10 ints 63.5% 147 rating.
Point is for every Caleb Williams there is a Jalen Hurts or Will Howard. A guy that will peak around the end of his Jr or Sr. year. What is rare is for a TF to lead a team to a National Championship. Trevor Lawrence in 2019 was the last person to do it (5 years ago) prior to that there was a 33 year gap. Jameis Winston with FSU in 2013 was the closest but he took red shirt in 2012 so he was a second year freshman. So it's rare and nearly impossible for a TF like Longstreet to win a NC. These days the Championship contenders all seem to have 4th, 5th and even 6th year seniors.
*IMHO its too early to to know what you have in Maiava. He has shown he has that closer gear at times. Not all QB's have that. Jayden is not Caleb Williams or Trevor Lawrence a guy hot out of the box, but it's fair to say we don't know if he will be the Jalen Hurts type a guy who peaks his Sr year and has a knack for making it into the NFL playoffs and is one of the best QB's in the NFL today.

    • @LockedOnUSC
      @LockedOnUSC  15 днів тому

      1) 11-5 in the same season gets you the contract in the NFL.
      2) Maiava is entering his 4th year of college and had the entire year to learn the playbook, let's not pretend that he's some rookie picking up a football for the first time.
      3) Not sure what your point is because Riley had to learn a new playbook, and so did Will Howard.
      4) And? Coaches and talent evaluators know what they have after 18 games starting, and having to learn multiple playbooks. They look at decision-making and situational awareness.
If you're saying that Maiava needs 5 or 6 years to be comfortable in college, then USC has MAJOR question marks at the QB position.

Im not completely sold on Maiava. He has a rocket arm, can make all the throws but his decision making needs to improve. You cant have a 4TD 3Int game every game and expect to win those games all the time. And the backbreaking and gamechanging pick sixs. Nebraska (came back to win) and ND. Moss did it also. (Michigan). Gotta take better care of the ball. And we were all told about his legs. I didnt see that at all. Did you?? So I think its gonna be a battle between him and Longstreet..Can you imagine if SC swooped in and got Ewers for one year? That would be amazing but I dont think we should hold our breath on that one. If he comes back its gonna be ND or Oregon. They dont develop QBs anymore. Both schools..Even though I think Angelli is pretty good. So we'll see. Just watch out for Longstreet. He has a real chance. If he wins the job, he should look real good against Missouri St and Georgia Southern at home which would build his confidence for the tougher games which would be coming up. We will see. Should be interesting..

The 3 possibilities I see for the lack of development of the QB’s are either the QB coach or the play calling. If I’m not mistaken, Riley isn’t the QB coach anymore, so that could be an issue. And the play calling was sub-par last season. The 3rd possibility is that Riley’s previous stud QB’s didn’t actually need “Riley’s development” since they were naturally gifted, giving the illusion that Riley isn’t a QB guru.

Marc, was not in the camp to remove Miller this past season, as demonstrated the offense did not improve the last 4 games. The offensive woes are at the feet of Riley and the Oline (until late in the season until the line started to improve, but not up to standard). Maiava has proven to be very 'up & down/streaky' and just as careless with the ball as Miller was at the end. Not bought into Maiava as the starter at this point and a freshman is concerning (look at how Nelson turned out) as is the transfer (Huard), very limited faith in Riley as the 'QB whisperer'. Run the damn ball!

I'll push back and say this.
Jayden played 5 (technically 4) games in a very hard offense to grasp. I think ANYONE who was paid to evaluate talent (like i was but in baseball) knows thats not enough. Anyone can have tools sure but, game experience is where growth happens, and that growth or step up- cant happen if hes not allowed to play freely and grow. And this fan base wants things to grow overnight, thats impossible. If USC wanted instant success in year 4 they shouldve let him go and got their proven Junior QB out the portal. Till then, the kid needs to play, end of story.
Also, Husan looks great but thats not D1 year 3 starters out there, those are talented BUT GREEN players. Husan cannot be rushed and anyone who wants him to play early are insane. If he plays CLEARLY BETTER and LIGHTS OUT then thats a call LR will have to make.
Heres the scenario- a year 4 Lincoln who NEEDS to win this year no matter what, is hanging his hat on Jayden. And if thats not it, he will put his coaching tenure at USC in the hands of an 18 yr old?
Either way you look at it, LR made his bed.
