I can only talk from a german plumbers perspective. I have been working 7 years in plumbing now and these ball valves are used exclusively for central heating here where its still allowed to use hemp for connections. For drinking water however it is not allowed since it "can be" a breeding ground for bacteria and other nasty things. We have to use alternatives for drinking water however in my own humble opinion. I think hemp is better because it swells up in contact with water, sealing the connection even further. In my career i never heard of anybody ever getting sick because the consumed or came in contact with water that came from a pipe fitted with hemp 🤷♂️

C) hemp decays way faster then dope or Teflon
@@Doc_Paradox are you a plumber? i am with 9 years in the trade. marring the treads do nothing towards the fitting integity, using a saw blade it totally okay. hemp is not decaying fast, here in sweden you can still find heating and water lines that are 80 years old, still no leaks on the hemp, with only linswws olil as a sealer. the paste we use in sweden is even better then linseed oil.
in sweden teflon tape is only used for hobby plumbers and sprinkler jobs, teflon is not used in swedish plumbing. its either hemp or thread locker
@@Hellforsa 26 years and own my own business. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you aren't licensed. Any plumber worth their salt would know. Marring threads ruins the integrity, let alone making them harder to thread. Hemp paste is only rarely used in steam applications. Even then there are dopes that are way more efficient and less caustic. You wouldn't dare use paste and hemp on drinking lines. Again, you're thinking of cheap hobby tape when it comes to your interpretation of Teflon. The rest of the world moved on from medieval plumbing. I get guys like you still claim that brass should have lead in it because it's easier to use. There is a reason why we moved on from using such techniques.
The old school way, reminds me of my father, a cop and a plumber, RIP dad 😢.
*TO EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT PTFE TAPE* this is a much better joint, because the organic hemp expands with water, so it's a self ceiling joint.

So many ignorant people here.
Hemp sealing is a perfectly viable method, that produces extremely strong and durable seals.
It's in wide use in Europe, and is legal for potable water and heating lines (water filled radiators and heating floors).
It has to be used with a compoud that greases the thread, to allow the coupling to rotate. It is usually linseed oil based. You have to use special kinds ,of compounds for special uses like solar systems based on glycol.
Hemp sealing is, in many ways, superior to teflon, it is extremely durable and "locks" the fitting in place much better than teflon would ever do. It also is natural, and costs almost nothing (such a shame bfor not giving cash to the big corporations, right?). It has to be done properly though, and require technique and knowledge, wich many here seem to lack.
Take this video as an opportunity to learn. The world is vast, and doesn't revolve around what you already know.
You are 100% right 👍🙏❤️
You are right ! Holds better ! Besides with PTFE fittings unscrew easily Can be a problem with faucets, valves..

Why scrap the thread ???
Dont forget to scratch the threads.
They haven't invented pre-scratched threads yet
Is it necessary to make scratch?
@@MahdiPreece960828love nope
@MahdiPreece960828love on a smooth brass/gun metal fitting the inner valley should be roughened to prevent hemp from slipping out during tightening. Generally steel pipe threads are rough enough to keep the hemp in place. This should be common knowledge to all people working within the industry. Unfortunately less experienced engineers only get involved in new installations & rarely work on existing pipework in plant rooms and boiler houses etc.

If I saw a plumber doing that he wouldn’t be my plumber anymore
Yeah, but if you hired him to do a job, because you didn't know how to do it yourself. How would you know if he was doing it right or wrong?

Its easier to just dent the threads with a small hammer.
Hemp much better seals than Teflon
Its really not…
Hemp rope is used all over the world with a thread sealant.
Some say it lasts longer also seals better caus3 the rope expands when moisture hits it
Yes!
So does Teflon tape.
@@ianmichelson768 with hemp you can turn 1/4 or even a bit more back without having a leak, with teflon you can't

Probably without the saw cutting the rings. But yes I can confirm.

Don't have to hacksaw the made in China fittings, they are cut so cheaply, the threads gall up and seize before you can bottom out the connection.
Yeah I know. I guess we've fallen way behind in plumbing and threading technology! Can't do it ourselves anymore.
That's no joke!
Why not just use PTFE thread tape.

Is this known as wiping the joint?
Nearly right
A brass thread is supposed to be scratched in the valley of the thread, roughing the surface of the thread does little to stop the hemp from slipping while the joint is tightened.

red loctite, though???
