I worked in , managed, owned and Operated restaurants and night clubs in New Orleans for almost 49 years. Every year, essence hosts its “empowerment seminars “. Some past seminars were nothing more than “let’s go get whitey” meetings, getting the attendees ramped up to harass and hassle local businesses by asking questions like “is this a black owned business “, and pulling “extra” stunts. The week of the “festival “ I had to deal with more “this is cold…this is too hot…there is hair in my food….its too noisy…..I don’t like this ( after eating 95%+ of dish) “ and demanding food be replaced or refunded, driving up costs and stressing out my staff. I had my entire staff look like they were prepped for surgery, wearing hats, hairnets, safety glasses, long sleeves clothing and gloves but still, the complaints came. Eventually, we just closed down that week, and everyone took their paid vacation.
Good that you feel the need to close your business for Essence, we need more people like you to speak up and close their businesses so that people who work hard can spend their money in establishments that are welcoming to them.
