There is a much cheaper pair of headphones out there that has a similair sound to the HD800 known as the Beyerdynamic DT880(600 ohm variant). However that headphone (despite its sub 200 price) requires a lot of power from a dedicated amplifer to play smoothly, which means it will sound disapointing on your phone's headphone jack(if it even has one). So I would recomend asking headphone forums for recommended budget amplifiers to power the DT880's. Either that or the Beyerdynamic TYGR 300r, which has also has a similair sound to the HD800 (with slightly extra bass) and is easier to power (if your into gaming these also rock).
If you're not an audiophile heavily into head-fi (amps, DACs, etc.) reviewing these brings no useful information to other interested users. HD800 requires a very good amp to power them, and someone who knows how to differentiate it to other models (e.g., HD650). Otherwise you're just having fun, which is OK, since it's *unbox therapy*.
audiophile is an industry hoax.. no one really have the time to listen sounds with hundreds of frequency on multiple amps and audio processor.. once you buy them you will know instanlly you had waste your money for bullshit
lol you dont know shit jual. IF you appreciate good live music, then getting a bit higher quality stuff matters. im using $300 headphones and a $1,000 amp. at a certain point it is snake oil, but the different between cans like these and earbuds is night and day.

Just to clarify some misconceptions in the comments: A) When you compare 1000$ headphones to a 1000$ gaming-pc, you have to realize that we are talking "hifi" here. It did take Sennheiser 6 years to make successor to the HD800. Every year new top of the line graphics card will be made. After 6 years of announcing HD800 they are still "one of the best" headphones on the market. If you don't upgrade your pc after 6 years, i bet it struggles to run newer games. B) The "plastic" on these is 60% glass, the ear cups are made of alcantara by hand. HD800's are made by hand in Germany. So no, they do not cost 50-100$ to make. And you have to take into consideration just the R&D cost of these headphones. C) If you only enjoy music by listening radio in your car when you drive to work, or you listen top 50 music from your iPhone on the go, then these are not for you. These are made for people who really enjoy and love music and for music producers. D) 1000$ speakers vs these. I have heard many speakers in my lifetime and i have heard HD800 with proper amp/dac combo. I can bet, that these are miles better in terms of sound accuracy vs any of the 1000-3000 speaker setup. Heck, i have hear'd 10 000$ speakers that doesn't sound as good as these. To some yeah, they are not worth the asking price. But if you truly love music and you want the music to be heard as the artist/composer intended it to be heard, then it is worth the asking price.
I’d have to agree with your points up to D. As a mix and mastering engineer, using good speakers vastly outweighs good headphones by a huge margin. HOWEVER, to really experience the quality of any speaker over £200 (yup after this point buying more expensive speakers without acoustic treatment is probably a waste) what matters the most is room acoustics. Unfortunately that can set you back thousands.... Only with correct speaker placement, low frequency absorption, first reflection points covered etc. all in place can you experience the potential of speakers. And oh my god it is magic. But good headphones like these will trump £100000000 speakers in an untreated room easily I’m sure
No, headphones are trying to replicate speaker soundstage and exprience, while speakers are just speakers, and the sound of the speakers is hugely determind by placement and acoustics of the room they're in. No headphone comes close to any speaker above 2000-3000$.
They're for the true audiophiles use to own the Sennheiser HD 555's I was blown away by the sound!! there are way better companies out there then Bose and Beats they just barely advertise because of having professional audio clients!!

I just love that album man, it's so fucking good. I love Black Sabbath since I was a kid and I'm finally going to one of their shows here on Rio. I'm feeling so pumped!
I don’t know why people think these are THAT expensive. If you’re going to use them a lot then they’re worth it. To compare if you want a good home theater system you’re looking at spending more than this. And these are known as the best headphones
They're not thay great. At that price range you'd be better off flushing that money and hear that sweet sound go down. Trust me, the 6 series on the other hand is different. Not only they are a better value but they sound better. Any planar over 400 is 👌
zcreto cant tell if you being sarcastic or not, but these are used by professionals. Sure the average joe would think these are expensive but theyre not made for them. Its like complaining you cant afford a lambo… theyre premium products made for people who will prioritize buying it
@@Ben-uc9xn not being sarcastic at all. i just disagree when people say its expensive. people get it regardless . i have the h800S z1r and other headphones and i still think more other premiums are far expensive 🙃 (but wont stop me from acquiring as needed) its hobby for those who choose to spend regardless.
Dude just swiping from mp3 to FLAC is a noticeable upgrade in quality with decent headphones, adding an Amp into the mix even more noticeable of an upgrade, adding actual vinyl's on top of an amazing set up is like your in the studio as they recorded these songs. You literally will just sit there and listen, close your eyes and picture everything happening, picking out each individual instrument and vocal twist. This video captures what these headphones can do perfectly.
Flac>mp3>>>>>>>>>>>>>90% of vinyl players playing crappy modern day records. Also, headphones are gonna have way more of an affect on sound than an Amp. Only get an Amp if you can't run your cans.
@@lollowBRO 7 year old comment mate. I was using my actual collection of original vinyl records and using HD600. So they require a lot of power to get them to their full potential. Now I've moved over to the world of IEM's and yes Loseless is way easier and better. Amps do play a larger roll then just power thought, a tube amp vs a solid state amp sound different and so on. Whole other story. 7 years and a few thousand dollars later I know a lot more then I did back then.
Searing treble. Laser beam treble. Eardrum frying treble. Treble spikes driven into your ears. That is what you pay for if you buy the HD800s. So, if you like your treble hyped, hot, and stinging, then gets these NOW.
In 2009 I pre-ordered a pair of these HD800 when they were 1st introduced, along with an Eddie Current ZDT tube amp, and they still bring a smile to my face almost years later. I have other headphones that sound as good, but they all cost 2x more, making these a better deal. While they do need a good DAC and Amp to sound their best, even a $200 DAC and Amp from Schitt Audio can sound good (or even a $150 HiFiMan EF2 tube amp) but some amps will make them sound too bright. They're quite comfortable as well.
When reviewers become greedy and vain and infatuated. 1500$ is just pricy, not fucking expensive. Hate that kind of reviews on UA-cam. As if a true audiophile would watch a YT reviewer before making his mind. He'll go straight to the music store. C'mon.
No discussion of audio quality besides "there's a lot of separation between the instruments"??? as an audiophile expecting a thoughtful review I am very disappointed!
Nyphix I understand... but it's not hard to throw in a few words comparing the quality with other hi-end products on the market. He's tested others. I'll assume he's just as clueless as most consumers :P
Nyphix If he's a long-time musician I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he knows exactly what to say when "reviewing" a product. I suppose if he's gotten this far he knows exactly what his fans want to hear.
Yes, a couple months ago it was "Ever tried bone conduction?" and that was about as click baitey it would get... Now it's "This keyboard will blow your mind!!!"...
That's what headphones are all about! I remember my first AG 240's through my Harmon Kardon HD380. It was such a leap from anything before it. The open air design just breathed compared to the old style Koss headphones I had in the 70's. This must be light ears ahead of that setup, but I know how it must have felt to be speechless on first listen. Enjoy!
I just linked the video Eggy, lol. And yeah, I dunno why people aren't talking about the Orpheus, which is considered the best set of headphones in the world.
Yeah I was expecting him to review them, I mean if you're going to drop that much money on headphones, at least make sure that they're the latest version, right?
+Katrina Bautista I recently decided to switch to only FLAC, and I notice no difference now, but I plan on someday getting a great sound system where it'll matter...
While it does matter how "good" your audio system is...MOST of the differentiation is dependent on whether you can physically/genetically have the ability to hear the difference. A lot of people can not hear the difference between even (12 cents) of a difference in a semitone let alone (6 cents) which I can actually even with a $70 pair of iems. So don't get too set on spending thousands of dollars on high-end audio equipment JUST to try to hear differences that are so minute (get it for the experience altogether). Don't listen to all the morons who tell you, your equipment needs to be in the top 2% of the market to hear the difference and that FLAC is "supreme". I can hear the difference and while it sounds nice, it's not worth the extra effort for the average person to hear the very small difference between 320kbps MP3 and FLAC.
+BlazeBurn I've got good hearing, but I mean my current setup of some low frequency response computer speakers can't play it all. Also you can feel certain low frequencies as well, but yes, a lot of stuff is overkill.
WolfLeader116 I see, well if you're not looking to get something WAY too pricey (or complex to setup), but still well within the capability to drive some of the highest quality recordings, might look into some decent iems like those from Dunu TopSound or Noble Audio. They certainly won't be cheap, but unless you can't stand iems, they are more portable, easier to drive, and come almost equal to most headphones of equal value or up to $100 more. The only thing you might miss out on is the super spacious sound stage of very open back headphones, but then again, those are not super practical unless you're in the right environment. If even those are too much, try the Fiio EX1, those are a rebranded/collaboration between Dunu and Fiio of the Dunu Titan 1 which is about $100+ but the Fiio EX1 is the same for about $70 with slightly less accessories and minus the fancy Dunu packaging.
I agree with the unpractical bit but dangerous ? are you out of your mind .F1 has introduced a lot of things that road cars use including things for safety you can think of F1 as the Nasa for cars
+Sharky Productions Plus personally I think that F1 cars are one of the most dangerous racecars that are there :/ Only because driver is soo exposed :)
I have the HD800S's , a Stereophile "A" rated DAC, and an amp with 1.3 watts into 300 ohms. I am told they are "bass light" but 30hz will punish your neck. I am told other headphones are "better than everything under $1800" (especially planar). Yet the other headphones have not convinced me they are better. I'm getting a huge soundstage, revealing presentation and a full range like large speakers. Nothing has blown me away compared to these.
Finally reviewing something that's actually good! Please learn how to use a damn turntable though. It should be spinning the whole time from when the needle goes down until the needle comes off.
Actually what "good" means for a headphone can be different depending on your preferences, the HD800 is a reference headphone with "realistic" and linear sound, great for audiophiles or studio engineers because of accuracy, less great for recreational listening because you will hear every technical flaw; good tracks sound rich and awesome, bad tracks sound flat and terrible. Also vented headphones don't perform well against ambient noise, i live close to a train station and my only headphone is a vented reference one, and i simply have to stop working/pause what i was watching or crank up the volume when a freight train passes.
My friend lent me this pair of headphones for one month and it's totally mind blowing, especially when playing classical music. I can just visualize the band and the auditorium when I close my eyes. Totally worth the price.
The difference between HiFi and MP3 is like the difference between stereo and surround sound for me. But you gotta make your headphones work hard for your money. Tweak them with a good EQ to get more out of them ;o)
That's the art of listening. You can do it with vynil, cd or mp3 - or whatever you want. But that's the art of doing it, sitting there, enjoying. And believe me, there is not much people left today, capable of doing that.
It would probably be a very incohesive experience, since the HD 800's have very little bass to speak of. You'd be feeling bass that's way more intense than anything you're actually hearing.
Not quite. Bass adds impact and "texture" to various low-end sounds, but it needs to be in some sort of balance with the rest of the frequencies you're hearing for it to be believable. Otherwise it comes across as artificial and forced, like what you hear in night clubs. It's fine if that's what your into, but if that IS what you're into, then I don't know why you would own a pair of HD800's in the first place (they're the polar opposite).
Colin MacAllister I know I have HD800S and the HDVD800 amp/dac. Just saying he doesn't make it clear that its a seperate product for people watching the video that don't know shit
J D I would assume that given they're in two seporate boxes, and he specifically mentions how he also got the amp that's tuned for it, that it implies he bought them seporately without having to explicitly say he bought them seporately.
Yeah... you said it right there... If you have the MEANS. $1400 bucks for headphone but you didn't mention the nearly $2200 for the amp and that's even more important. Didn't mention 300 ohms of impedance so you're not going to be able to plug it into your smartphone and get full sound. This is critical info you should have been up front with and not just say it's a bit pricey!
If you dont have a lot to get a really similar sound i personally tried this ones and then try the samson sr850 open headphones that are less than 60 dollars and you can use without an amplifier and they don't sound that different
No it doesnt if the cable is less than a 1m long that it doesnt matter at all because theres gona be no interference, had to use such setup for a while till better cables arrived and for me there was no audible difference, but you are right that when u have a 6k setup you should at least use better cables.
got this setup a few months back. I just got 800s reference series headphones as an upgrade (definitely not cheap), and it is mind blowing. You wouldn't think you could improve on the hd's, but they did it. easy 3,500 to 4 grand price for this combination, but we'll worth it if you are an audiophile and can afford ut.
they are literally meant for studios, sound aficionado, professionals etc. There arent really any headphones that can top these things. the best of the best no doubt
+sesameseed01akajoeyk I think there is one headphone that is better and more expensive called the Orpheus but it doesn't matter because sennheiser makes them too lol now if your willing to give up college for headphones then be my guest haha
ckck... you dont have competencies when reviewing audio experience.you cant just say hd800 mindblowing without having knowledge of other headphones to be compared
Not a very good pc but you miss the point. When some of us spend three times the price of the headphones on hi fi, no point plugging in beats type shit for that level of audio.
you can keep a hd800 and enjoy it for 30 years or longer. for sure it s pricey, but what about a 1000$ smartphone you ll keep 2 or 3 years. when you love music, a 1000 or 1500$ headphone is a real investment
Price is ok (vide HifiMan HE100, Focal Utopia, Audeze LCD4, Sennheiser Orpheus), but you need for HD800 and another good quality headphones an adequate amplifier, like Burson Conductor V2+ (1500$).
I mean, even taking audio quality and fine differences out of the equation, you're saying you can't tell the difference between IEMs with heavily v shaped sound, and studio OPEN BACKS. You've obviously never tried anything remotely like these.
*Honest Review* I got the upgraded version of these headphones (HD 800S) with the amp shown here in the video (HDVD 800). I'm no audiofile and can't hear the difference between vinyl and Flac files. I think that these are great headphones that are extremely comfortable. They have an immense soundstage which is great for gaming and when I play battlefield 4 it sounds like I'm in an actual war zone with ringing after-tones from bullets. When I listen to music the hd800S sounds better than my mobile Bose qc35s but not enough to warrant the price (If I am to zone out listening to a song it's because of the song and not the headphones). In conclusion, if you take gaming seriously I would definitely recommend these since they give you a competitive advantage that no 7.1 headset will ever give you and sound so real. You need to have quiet environment to be able to use these. For music, if you are just a casual listener like me, these don't warrant the price and you're better off with a pair of $300 headphones.
I'll save you some time.
headphones: $1,000
amp:$ 2,200
OK I leave
worth it to get the cleanest mix
+shamimul hoque yes siiir. headphones are originally around 1,600. lemme just pull that outta my ass real quick

It's a purple and marble pressing by Warner Brothers which explains the filthiness. It goes for $30 on Discogs.
Why tf does everyone hate black sabbath. They are not even that bad
He needs a pro-ject spin clean.
When he pulled out Paranoid by Black Sabbath a smile appeared on my face and it wouldn't go away :D
I just love that album man, it's so fucking good. I love Black Sabbath since I was a kid and I'm finally going to one of their shows here on Rio. I'm feeling so pumped!
Same but for dilla
And he played my all time favorite Sabbath song... "War pigs"!
Damn straight dude. That's the main reason I enjoyed this video, but then I realized that I don't have this gem on vinyl.
Same but for Dilla too.
Any planar over 400 is 👌
I agree ... not sure why people think it is expenisive ... aighhh people dont work enough i guess
zcreto cant tell if you being sarcastic or not, but these are used by professionals.
@@Ben-uc9xn and i aint haveto be a professional
You have to try out Audeze LCD-X or LCD-XC. They are more pricey, but when I try them on, oh man, forget the price, they're worth it.
they shure are lcd 3 is the one i will go with in the Audeze line
he has. these to most are fatiguing due to the 6khz peak.

haha
i prefer the abyss than all the audeze lineup, but i love sine though

Wow, I never would've guessed.
thanks you saved me and my family from a whirling wind of impending doom

I was listening to this with sennheiser
Rich bitch
+I_NoScoped_JFK could be any cheaper sennheiser afterall it's a brand and not all of its headphones are expensive
Onyaga Well the ones that I'm using are $350 CAD
im not rich but I have a Sennheiser HD201 though.. cheap but great pair of headphones..
Sam Cyrus Bayog I'm not rich either I just had enough money to buy them
Since when is $1,000 just a little bit pricey?
for cash people maybe hehehehe
He clearly didn't mean it that way.
3000 with the amp
It depends on how you look at it. Compared to high end speakers you could say they are cheap ;) high end speakers can easily cost 20x as much or more!
You are absolutely right, it's fairly cheap for such a magnificent product. I like mine very much.
Why does Unbox Therapy always write gullible in the description?
Hahahhahahahhahahahahaahhaha
ALMOST....almost...
Oh. That's good
Shit got me.
NEARLY. NEARLY.
They're quite comfortable as well.
man $1,495.00 its not a little bit pricy. its really pricy lol
Sennheiser just released the Orpheus. 50.000$. so what it is? :D
*****
mmmh you're right, I just checked and it seems that the Orpheus is the old model, so the HE-1 is the "remastered" Orpheus ;)
its the f1 car of headphones tho
When reviewers become greedy and vain and infatuated. 1500$ is just pricy, not fucking expensive. Hate that kind of reviews on UA-cam. As if a true audiophile would watch a YT reviewer before making his mind. He'll go straight to the music store. C'mon.
@@hondaissace not quite definitely a ferrari though.
Clicked the link, saw $1000, shit my pants, and kept right on moving :)
I suppose if he's gotten this far he knows exactly what his fans want to hear.
so true
His channels is about unboxings, not about reviews, it is simply that ;)
daniglevelas_ touche.
It's called active listening. Most people don't do that.
Is it just me or has Unbox Therapy's titles become more click-baity than they used to be?
if he gets more views and his content doesn't change it doesn't really matter
I generally find his content to be a bit overbearing and saccharine. It's ok every once in a while, but I can't watch more than 3 of videos in a row.
Yes, a couple months ago it was "Ever tried bone conduction?" and that was about as click baitey it would get... Now it's "This keyboard will blow your mind!!!"...
Well if $1.5k headphones not gonna blow your fucking mind, you should not be on internet.
like for real what do you want from the guy lol
This headphones has recently been updated HD800s with better high-ends. Quite surprise to see the review of the old version.
Enjoy!
this headphone will literally blow my mind because its so god damn expensive.
Fuck i wish i could try those
I said 'try' I will never and probably could never justify
paying that much for headphones.. so i dont reallly give a shit

Only $1000? That's pretty good. I remember back when they were fixed at $1400.
Check out the Sennheiser Orpheus...
I just linked the video Eggy, lol. And yeah, I dunno why people aren't talking about the Orpheus, which is considered the best set of headphones in the world.
You should review the Sennheiser Orpheus. ;)
Agree!
Quite sure he has already.
LOL I bet he doesn't know there is a HD 800 S
Yeah I was expecting him to review them, I mean if you're going to drop that much money on headphones, at least make sure that they're the latest version, right?
+Durrant miller this
Your explanation of listening to vinyl was dead on how I feel !!! You was dropping jewels for real !! Dope post !!
Not using a lossless music format is an insult to the headphones.
Yeah he should be testing all headphones/speakers listening to a single, specific FLAC file...
Want. No, really. Want.
Got?
F1 headphones?
So they are fast, amazingly unpractical, and dangerous?
I guess I won't buy those :/
I agree with the unpractical bit but dangerous ? are you out of your mind .F1 has introduced a lot of things that road cars use including things for safety you can think of F1 as the Nasa for cars
Oh! trust me. The treble on these things is so unforgiving that they will make your ears bleed on some tracks.
dangerous as in if you turn into a corner as fast as you can you can pass out?
+Sharky Productions Maybe, but If You hit a wall at about 200mph, hmmm.
I guess You could not really get out of one of those :/
+Sharky Productions
Plus personally I think that F1 cars are one of the most dangerous racecars that are there :/
Only because driver is soo exposed :)
They seem good and unique... will buy 5 of them for all my family members.

Finally reviewing something that's actually good!
Please learn how to use a damn turntable though.
It should be spinning the whole time from when the needle goes down until the needle comes off.
Yeah he should stop reviewing that bose shit tho and that UE megaboom shit
Expensive cables have no benefit
Actually what "good" means for a headphone can be different depending on your preferences, the HD800 is a reference headphone with "realistic" and linear sound, great for audiophiles or studio engineers because of accuracy, less great for recreational listening because you will hear every technical flaw; good tracks sound rich and awesome, bad tracks sound flat and terrible.
Also vented headphones don't perform well against ambient noise, i live close to a train station and my only headphone is a vented reference one, and i simply have to stop working/pause what i was watching or crank up the volume when a freight train passes.
Zer0 Bin0pse I meant good as in an actual, useful, well designed product. Rather than some kickstarter hipster trash by a bunch of design students.

@@andrewbergamann7982 with amp it's $50k without amp $30k
Dear Santa..
2 year warranty ?? Should be lifetime. Every headphone 200+ has a 2 year
They also happen to last a really, really long time, like really long time, I'm talking life time long if you look after it.
Except stereo is better
@@imacat8476 Yes it is. It's just to explain the difference.
A little pricey eh...YOU CAN BUY A FUCKING BEAST COMPUTER WITH THAT MONEY
You could buy a way more beast computer if it was the sennheiser orpheus 2 ;)

right...that too but ya know a computer's better

Have any idea which turntable he is using
I feel pain. Even if it's *only* a $180 cart.
That's the art of listening. You can do it with vynil, cd or mp3 - or whatever you want. But that's the art of doing it, sitting there, enjoying. And believe me, there is not much people left today, capable of doing that.
i always like it when my headphones are as cheap as my pc.
Wow. Amplifier is more expensive than headphones ! Hahaha
HDVD 800 is an amp/dac combo device (save you money buying the dac , the dac on it is meh) , if you are looking for amp only from Sen , then HDVA 600
$3,600 headphone/amp/turntable setup with a $6 RCA cable.....SHAME!
For the cables, people should give MUCH less shit than they do.
Him talking about the music is the way I feel every single day listening to music or DJing. Loved the way he described it
Imagine using the bass vest with this
oh yes
Now thats life my friend. Hear music and wear them.
It would probably be a very incohesive experience, since the HD 800's have very little bass to speak of. You'd be feeling bass that's way more intense than anything you're actually hearing.
Well , thats what bass do right ? Just fill the empty space 😩
This doesnt come with an amp though, your making out it does?
Jim Dunne but it does. sort of. its sold separately but the amp he got was desined for the HD 800.
M8 thats not even their top model, look up orpheus 2, that, is the most high end headset in the world.
Yeah... you said it right there...
1000$? really? does it fly or fire or anything?
Just buy it , you will se its worth every penny , where i first listend to it i was crying because the sound is so beautiful its MIND BLOWING !!!!!
Or you know. Try on a pair of MDR-V6's .-.
Much much cheaper, and is the highest quality of what *most* people are able to discern.
Robert K. Does your car or tv fly or fight fire or anything?
super jealous. wish i could experience music like that.

No it doesnt if the cable is less than a 1m long that it doesnt matter at all because theres gona be no interference, had to use such setup for a while till better cables arrived and for me there was no audible difference, but you are right that when u have a 6k setup you should at least use better cables.

It's not exactly meant for that demographic.
Mu Egames at that point you probably have that nice PC.
Or multiple ones if you hate working with amp drivers

*Honest Review*
I got the upgraded version of these headphones (HD 800S) with the amp shown here in the video (HDVD 800).
