Brilliant shout out for vintage tools, David! The quality is unbeatable. Most of my tool kit has been picked up for (literally in some cases) pennies from various car boots, auctions and antiques centres.
So true. I think there’s a market for specialising in these things!

You and the tree in the intro had me laughing out loud! But I couldn’t agree more. Not only are those tools pleasing to the eye, they really ARE made to last and probably a joy to work with. The one you’re holding is absolutely wonderful! I’d buy it myself.
I’ve now dug up several trees with it!

Completely agree, I work as a head gardner and all my spades forks, and hoes are vintage, over the years I trawled ebay and antique shops and picked up some really nice ones.
Quite simply these were made in an era were there was a lot less mechanisation and peoples livelihoods depended on decent tools.
My spades are a yardley fully strapped spade and a gpo stamped bulldog trench spade.
I have a fully strapped albion trench fork plus a lighter five tined fork and a yardley strapped potatoes fork. In addition to these I have a really old balast fork stamped gwr (great Western railway) the year of manufacture 1918.
The balast fork is second to none for shifting raked up stones when seeding ground or moving compost or woodchip.
I would imagine the youngest of the above tools would be from the early 1940s the rest probably older.
You know with a well cared for old tool that the previous owner obviously thought highly of it from the condition of it.

The way you threw that fork at the end reminded me of my sisters. Went along the lines of: No. 2 "Pass the garden fork and don't throw ....", thrown by No. 1, landed straight through the foot of No. 3. Me? I am No. 4

Dear David and Dale, I like the pitchfork but I LOVE the Rover out in front of the shop! David, your tree fighting skills need work.
Back when I could still garden. a lot of my hand tools belonged to my grandparents or even great-grandparents. Worked just fine. BTW ... Bough (i.e. wow)ie knives? We Yanks say Boo-ee . Bow-ee is used too. One question - what did that poor tree do to deserve ending as a UA-cam video?
It’s now been transplanted somewhere else!
