Agreed, but people look to these videos as How-To's. I did. But of course, it's smart to watch a bunch of videos on a given topic -- especially the "what I did wrong" videos. I think if he had looked at a couple of videos first he would have avoided all of the mistakes and the resulting feedback. At least the comments were not personal attacks or name calling...
It's NOT the only way to learn. Experience is a wonderful teacher, but it's not the only teacher or, often, the best teacher. No need to stand in front of a moving train to "learn" why you shouldn't do that. This video is an example of how to waste your money and time because DIYers think professionals don't know things about substrate preparation, expansion rations, mechanical decoupling, etc.
Thank you, Kevin! I figure if I screw up a DIY project, others can avoid the same mistakes by watching my videos. That said, although this was my first time laying porcelain tile outdoors (or anywhere), I intentionally modified the instructions for this particular installation. Achieving the desired depth and slope to clear the door, match the threshold and establish the deck height and slope, required precisely increasing the depth of the mortar towards the far end - a huge challenge for me! I intentionally did not batter the back side of the tiles with mortar because it would make it very difficult to lift the heavy tiles up to adjust the depth of the mortar. Making straight lines with the mortar trowel was the least of my concerns. The umbrella over the work area helped a great deal to keep it cool enough to make the adjustments in direct sun on a hot day (for Sequim). Bottom line, the porcelain tiles are rock solid, look amazing and my installation is holding up like new! We are very pleased with the results! Thanks again for watching my video and commenting!

I respect people who give it a go but im sorry to say it is all completely wrong. Just a few points for you and others not to make the same mistakes. 1) do not pull the adhesive in a rounded motion. Only pull all adhesive in one direction. This is so that the ridges created by the trowel can collapse and cover at least 90% of the tile. Also once you have pulled your adhesive with the trowel once, do not go over the same spot twice. This is reducing the amount of adhesive in the area. 2) Back butter the tiles for better adhesion 3) Use spacers. I noticed that while you pushed the timber in between the tiles, you was pushing the tile closer to the tile on the other side. Then back again.
Thanks for mentioning it’s your first time. You may want to watch more DIY videos and learn more about products being used next time. Back-buttering and decoupling membrane would be a big improvement.

Nice work. I'm staining some concrete using 3 different colors. I'm putting mortite caulking down in a pattern to look like big tiles. If staining the concrete doesn't work out, I'll be covering up my mistake using tiles....LOL. I'll make a video and post it on my youtube to help other DIY homeowners cover up their ugly concrete walkways & patios.
9:18.. You see alot of un touched thinset. Only touching in 2 places, trowel marks still in thinset. That size tile you should backbutter the tile as well. Just my thoughts

I post my DIY videos NOT to say that I did it right, but to show others what worked or did not work for me so that other DIY’rs have a better idea as to what they are getting into. Way to be a 🍆 first time I laid tile the mortar gave me a rash that lasted for months. So yea ppl can wear whatever gloves they want. I wear them during any DIY after that painful experience. Must be allergic to something in it. He also said he wasn’t a pro.

A+ for effort. But some bad advice here. Put on more mortar than you think you need and let it push out the sides as you press down so you can fine tune height, and always back butter your tiles with mortar!!!
you shouldn't put the concrete on like that... ;) you put it so the lines are perpendicular to the tile and then you slide it slightly so you dont have airbubbles underneath ....
Excellent question! The slope of the original concrete landing was much too steep for the width of the new deck (the distance from the doorway to the front end of the deck). Chris, our contractor, suggested that I reduce the slope to 1/8 inch the full length using thicker mortar at the far end of the concrete porch so that it would match the deck boards. Otherwise, there would be an increasing height difference between the porcelain tiles and the deck boards, which could result in a dangerous tripping edge. This required a lot of careful application of mortar, and testing the slope with a level before pressing down the porcelain tiles. And, for those of you who criticized my not applying mortar to the underside of the tile - if I had, it would have been very difficult to lift up the tiles to make adjustments. Rest assured, there is PLENTY of mortar in contact with the tiles for a permanent, safe installation. Thank you for your comment and for visiting my channel! - Randall
Your adhesion between tile and mortar was not good just by the fact that you were able to lift those tiles so easily and you could still see the grooves left by the trowel. Back buttering those large tiles with the notched side of the trowel fills in the grooves and creates a permanent bond that you would have needed to pry loose to lift them. There are dozens of good tiling videos on youtube you should have researched before doing your job that would have shown you the proper way to do that job.
If you're not going to use proper troweling methods on floors (use straight lines), and allow for the air to escape when placing pressure on top of the tile, then yes, you need to backbutter the tiles.
It important to brick lay the tiles which gives maximum strength. Also, I would of left that slight grade in tack. The grade was put in place so water can run away and run off the stoop of the house. Build up water will freeze on the stoop which will make the stoop hazardous. You had good intentions, but over all thumbs down.
You need to backbutter! You see how easily you pulled off a couple?, that proves the tiles are NOT properly adhering to thinset! Those tiles will pop off eventually!
Where is your mixer?? I am lazy and use tools to help me!! Back buttering is what you should do also. Next time, check out a video on how to do this!! lol

Regarding back buttering the tiles with mortar, this is my updated Disclaimer in my Description for this video: Disclaimer: I am not a professional at laying tile of any type. I am simply sharing my first-time experience at laying porcelain tile on an existing 3' x 4' concrete porch. Although I had watched other videos on how to lay porcelain tile, and I followed the directions on the bag of mortar as best I could, it was necessary to make modifications for my particular application. And as I discovered, it was a lot more work and hassle than I ever imagined, especially matching the intended slope of the soon-to-be-built surrounding composite deck! The slope of the existing concrete porch was much steeper than the new deck was to be. Reducing the slope of the porcelain tiles required applying a gradually thicker layer of mortar towards the outside end of the concrete porch. If I did not closely match the slope of the porch with the deck, there would be a significant, unsightly and dangerous dip at the junction of the tile porch and the deck. To determine the slope as I was applying the mortar, I had to lightly set down the heavy 12" x 16" tiles, check the degree of the slope with my level, lift the tiles back up and add or remove mortar as needed, then set the tiles back down again for another check. After doing this several times, I eventually got the tiles at the correct slope. Had I back buttered the tiles with mortar, this process would have been difficult if not impossible, not to mention messy!
they can stick without back buttering but not with the stiff mix he made on top of his trowel angll being too low....you can see when he lifts the 2 tiles he decides to raise up that they had 50% or less coverage. You know for sure the others he didnt lift are the same or worse. Absolute butchery.

I couldn't disagree more! How is it a shame to share your 1st attempt? I am looking to have a go at a similar project myself and I find 1st timer's videos really useful as it shows potential/common mistakes, what not to do and problems to overcome. Constructive(!) criticism in the comments can also be really useful. Videos by professionals are great, I am taking notes from them, but it's a mistake to disregard 1st timer videos as a learning resource.
Putting mortar on the back of the tile too. Spread with the flat side of trowel. Helps to get no voids and better coverage. Like buttering toast. Hope that helps.
Thanks for your comment, but did you watch my entire video? Do you have a video showing the proper method for installing 12x16 porcelain tiles? Sometimes you have to adjust the recommended method. Our tile landing still looks good almost a year later.

It has been 2 and a half years since I layed this porcelain tile and it is holding up perfectly! I couldn't be happier with the job that I did. Perhaps you did not read my comment explaining why I intentionally modified the recommended instructions. Sometimes this is necessary in order to get the job done. In this situation, I had to reduce the steep slope of the existing concrete porch to match that of the soon-to-be-constructed new deck, and I only had a few days to get it done. So, I applied a gradually thicker layer of mortar towards the outside end of the concrete porch. Since you cannot place a level on wet mortar, I lightly placed the tiles on the mortar first, checked the degree of the slope, then removed the tiles to add or remove mortar. Drill and paddle mixer would save your hands stirring and putting a thinset of adhesive on the back of every tile aswell as on the concrete

U should always "BACK BUTTER" your tiles that would of also helped with your leveling problem

A tip for you when your pushing the tiles down leave the spacer in place so you don’t close the gap
The adhesive looked a little on the dry side. That concrete would suck a lot of moisture out of it before it has a chance to set.

Definitely should use a drill mortar mixture tool... Definitely should've buttered the back sides of the tiles, they will come loose.
Hold the trowl more at an angle that way you get the 10mm notch👍

1. adhesive is mixed way too dry and, 2. just spend $5 on a mortar mixer extension for a power drill to save all that hand mixing.
The slope was meant to stay a slope so water could run off so why did you correct the slope?

Should back-butter either way. These large format tiles usually cup in the middle as well so back-buttering helps with that as well.

You are going to regret not putting mortar in the back of the tile in about a year or less. Not too good at all
It has been 2 and a half years since I layed this porcelain tile and it is holding up perfectly! I couldn't be happier with the job that I did.
Perhaps you did not read my comment explaining why I intentionally modified the recommended instructions. Sometimes this is necessary in order to get the job done. In this situation, I had to reduce the steep slope of the existing concrete porch to match that of the soon-to-be-constructed new deck, and I only had a few days to get it done. So, I applied a gradually thicker layer of mortar towards the outside end of the concrete porch. Since you cannot place a level on wet mortar, I lightly placed the tiles on the mortar first, checked the degree of the slope, then removed the tiles to add or remove mortar. Had I back buttered the tiles with mortar, this process would have been difficult if not impossible, not to mention messy! Thank you for your comment and watching my video!
@@randallwingett I'm sorry but you are wrong. Back buttering is absolutely required. It would it no way hinder what you were trying to accomplish and I don't understand how you think it would. Maybe you have the wrong impression of what back buttering actually is???
No reason to tell us you're not a professional. Everything about this video is wrong. If anyone wants their tile to fail, then follow these absurd instructions.
And what is your professional advice? The porcelain tiles look as good as the day I laid them. No one has slipped or fallen during snow, ice and rain. Thank you for watching!
