  • Japanese convenience stores (Conbini) are known as the finest in the world. Offering unparalleled levels of customer service and, as the name implies, convenience! There soon set to get even more convenient though, as popular chain Family Mart launches the first in a new line of 'Unmanned Conbini.' JapanPro visited the first store opened on April 1st near Tokyo Station to check it out and see what shopping in the future is really like!

      Especially during this pandemic, the idea of contactless shopping sounds more and more appealing!

    That is straight up amazing, I did not expect the AI-System!
    I thought you'd have to scan your selected items yourself at the counter, but this is truly next level.

      Aha, yea it's pretty impressive. Even if you put items back on the shelf it keeps track!

      Absolutely. I was actually guessing it would get some items wrong, but it was super fast & accurate. You don’t even need to use any app either - Yasu

    Pretty cool. I think it would be a shame if all conbinis ended up like this though. I often enjoyed the human element of interacting with the conbini staff, especially at my local ones, where they recognised me. Also, think of the jobs that will ultimately be lost.

    • @JapanGo
      @JapanGo  3 роки тому +1

      Ah, yeah. Although such system should help Japanese society (which needs more labor) in the long run, interactions with local staff would be lost. So I know what you mean! - Yasu

    I love the 'DERU' (get the he** out) part. I am not sure if this works in other countries. Will they get out of a store after shopping?

    Whilst this is great from a technology and consumer point of view you have to wonder about the affect this will have on peoples jobs. Another informative video guys, thank you.

      Yea that's definitely the instinct reaction of a lot of people I think. Maybe what you don't know though, is that Japan currently faces a labour shortage of around 1.2 million people. It's even estimated that this could reach as high as 6 million by the year 2030 due to Japan's large, aging population. I feel these kinds of systems will become essential as part of the solution to this is this issue.

    An extra secure store with reinforced windows and doors and members only requirement will be the only way to stop the issues going on in bigger cities.

    This reminds me of an old commercial, and I don't even remember what it was for. this guy walks into a store and the POV switches to the CCTV cameras, showing him sticking things in his jacket. He goes to leave and this uniformed guy stops him. You think, "oh, an anti-shoplifting ad"; but no. The uniform simply hands him his receipt and says 'have a nice day, sir'. Man, I cannot wait for the proliferation of this tech. beats out nuclear warheads anyday.

    why would you want more of this... there's going to be less people working at conbini's if japan moves in this direction, and it's already hard to find a job in that country

    • @JapanGo
      @JapanGo  3 роки тому +3

      Actually as far as I'm aware, there's actually a labour shortage in Japan (currently around 1,200,000 people), not a job shortage. In fact, I've even seen numbers to suggest that Japan could face a shortage of 6,000,000+ workers by the year 2030. So if anything, these kinds of automated services will become a necessity, not just a luxury.

      Think if someone had a disability where they couldn't walk, this is a great option for them.
