Many.....many.... surplus '98 Krag rifles were altered to carbine with a 22" barrel. The 1903 front sight is a common feature on these altered rifles. You apparently have the 1902 rear sight with the neat "twist-up" peep aperture.
Nice old rifle!, very rare here in Australia, but I will find one :D. They are solid and she cycles well!, as for loosing your face, well only thing I have been told to really watch with old rifles, is excessive rust, and head-space!, as long as it eats a field gauge and not a No-Go gauge, your fine!, that old girl will shoot for many years to come!
I have the carbine model and I love this old Rifle. I hand load my ammo with bullets for the 30-30 Win. .308 dia. because of their longer bearing surface, making a little more accurate. Thanks for your video.
Most of these krag's was sporterized in the 1920s through out the rest of the 20th century. I have a 1898 krag jorgensen chambered in 30-30 Winchester. It's been sporterized and rebarreled by a gunsmith years ago. It's the most accurate 30-30 I have ever shot and it's a fantastic shooter. The thing is some sporterized krag's should be left alone. I do understand if it was done poorly its good to restore but the one's done by a professional gunsmith or craftsman should be left alone. Most of the Krag jorgensen rifle history was hunting and sport shooting it did not last long in military service. Remember this when you think about restoring a sporterized rifle Its part of the guns history. If you do restore its a good chance your removing 80 to 100 years of history. I like what you did to your rifle and I do believe it needed a restore. I myself restore guns sometimes but only the poor ones done by bubba Joe. I noticed the cocking piece has been modified are you planning one replacing it?
It’s good to see a bubba’d rifle be carefully restored. Very nice work.

Aussie50 thank you! Yeah, I made sure to have it inspected. No cracks etc
Bought an 1898 sporterized rifle recently and it is a great beast and piece of history.
Great project. Nice to see a classic restored.

I have a few Krag sporters and agree with your comment. Must are very well done by Craftsman and have their own story to tell.
It's a shame that barrel's been cut down a little, but I like what you've done with it.
Happy Veterans Day
