      I didn't either I just grew them in the laundry basket and set it at the sunniest window. same with my potatoes. Just think of it as house plant while growing it. I put the large transparent trash bag in the laundry basket as lining. potting mix and the slips of the sweet potatoes. If you have a porch you can set them in the porch. anything can be use as a container, used cup or used pencil tray those can be use for micro greens. even the soda bottle can be use for growing lettuce.

    I’m in the process of doing this and it takes a lost longer than 7 days to get to their “7 day mark”. This process takes about 4-5 months from first putting the sweet potato in the water to when you get the slips to plant.

      Rapid start... general hydroponics, works wonders on all new starts. Also provides very necessary trace elements for cole crops works for both soil and hydro. If your in america also they spray you potatoes sweets and regular to stunt growth... basically they dont want it growing in storage and transit. Go to local farmers market buy local organic ones that haven't been hosed with poison. Hope this helps whoever...

      If you want something that will stay green forever, don't get a crop plant that is supposed to be harvested. Get a plant just for decoration. Succulents are good, easy to grow and thrive on neglect. A jade plant, even an Aloe Vera plant you can even use that for medicinal use, to soothe burns and stuff.

    This is a very slow way to get sweet potato slips! If you lay a sweet potato on its side on some moist medium it will start producing slips and each slip will have roots. At 6-8 inches long, you cut them back 2-3 inches and let grow for another few days. Then you simply separate the rooted slips from the "potato" and pot them up. Takes half the time your method does. Also, anywhere that the sweet potato vine touches the ground it will grow roots and produce more potatoes, so trellising should not be done.

    • @Rattlerjake1
      @Rattlerjake1 3 роки тому

      @@leeLee-nh1vv The sweet potato is the FOOD for the slips to grow, so over time it will be used up. BUT, if some of the slips are allowed to stay attached to the sweet potato, and grow to maturity, at some point they will feed the 'potato' along with producing more 'potatoes'.

    • @Rattlerjake1
      @Rattlerjake1 3 роки тому +1

      @@leeLee-nh1vv - Something to understand. If you are using a sweet potato from the grocery store, they sometimes won't sprout, they will just rot. This is because many producers spray them with a growth inhibitor. Look for one that already has some small nubs (eyes), they should do okay. BUT once you get one to grow, save a potato from that plant for future growing. If you are in a growing zone where you get freezing temps, you can bring them inside and grow them over winter if you give them plenty of light. You can also grow several varieties; there are purple, red, white, orange, and combinations of those with different inside flesh colors also.

    • @Rattlerjake1
      @Rattlerjake1 3 роки тому +2

      @@leeLee-nh1vv - Though I'd also mention that wherever the vine lays on the ground it can and often will also root and produce more tubers.

    Climate is a big factor here. If you are not in a hot and humid climate, your potatoe will not grow this fast. Put on a heat pad for gardening. Keep in the warmest, most humid place you have! Otherwise do not become discouraged when this takes a lot longer than the video. 💕

      Did you change the water every three or four days? It can develop bacteria. Please watch other videos. It takes a long time for the first plant to come. When It comes. It will keep coming. Then, You can pull the plants off gently and place in water for rooting. You can put the plant that has rooted in a bucket to grow sweet potatoes. It will take months, but I grew them last year. It is hard work, but fun seeing and understanding the food process.

    I read that grocers/distributors spray sweet potatoes with a sprout inhibitor. So frequently soak and wash the potatoes in distilled water. That is the closest water to rainwater you can use unless you keep a rainwater barrel under the roof gutter pipe. Then put the potatoes under a warm light (if it is winter) when the sprouts come out about 6 inches long you can simply break them off from the potato and put them in a glass of water. Then a bunch of roots will grow and then you can plant the slips in sandy loam. But I like to use a short barrel to plant them in because you will never find all your potatoes no matter how you dig. The roots go everywhere.

      Vietnam is hot and humid there's a lot of water going on. I have some sitting in a dry dark kitchen that grew so fast overnight that there much longer than the bottom of my hand to my middle finger. And I don't have giant hands on female but for three or four days that's an incredible amount of gross so being that he or she had them in the light and was intentionally trying to grow them properly they get pretty wild. From the videos I've seen so far they've told the truth. Who knows maybe there's a little exaggeration in there but I don't think so. At least not enough to mention.

      Planting sweet potato (camote) in the Philippines is far different from abroad.. because of the hot weather..camote can easily grow there and you’ve got lots of stems around to use and grow a new camote plant. And even the whole sweet potato itself can easily grow when you dig it into the ground..Abroad no camote tops available to buy and to able to use it instantly to replant it..If you plant straight the whole sweet potatoes into the ground it will got rotten because of the cold weather..So the video here is the best way to produce a camote plant when you’re abroad with colder weather..

      @Here Beforeyou Actually, I only found out about it a few weeks ago. I haven't tried them yet. It looks legit. Other types of plants that I have actually tried, it was usually best to get young leaves.

    I just came upon this video today and looked for an update on the sweet potato tubers you planted but could not find one. Did they produce for you?

  • @ndeshtkyok9387
    @ndeshtkyok9387 4 роки тому +4

    Two potatoes shoots are enough for one backet of the size u used. So that they get enough space to produce the tubers. Enough sun shine is required too.

    • @2008betwixt
      @2008betwixt 4 роки тому

      P N thank you, how many potatoes off of two shoots normally

    • @ndeshtkyok9387
      @ndeshtkyok9387 4 роки тому +2

      @@2008betwixt we still require 2 potatoes in one backet. It doesn't matter how many shoots come out of the two as some tend to be less shoots than others. The more the shoots the greater the possibilities of having more tubers produced if a right condition is prevalent.

    I cut the top and bottom off my potato, wrapped them in wet paper towel and put it in plastic bag. After about three days I notice roots forming on one and leaves on the other!!! Gonna give them a couple more days then transfer to a pot.

      Check out OldAlabamaGardener because he did this and showed all stages in different videos. Roughly had 75 sweet potatoes from 6 plants. His garden bed looked larger than this one, he explains that also.

    In New Zealand this sweet potato is called Kumara. ..you can grow your own slips exactly how is shown in video but kumara will crawl along the ground like a vine so needs a lot of space ... can grow in bucket but wouldn't get many I would imagine
