Hi Electric Viking. I've just finished reading Wolfgang Munchau's new book, 'Kaput: The End of the German Miracle'. It's an impressive book, well written & well researched. He talks a lot about the big German car manufacturers. It was only published 4 weeks ago, but keep an eye out for it, it's well worth a look.👍 Edit: The author also did a bunch of interviews promoting Kaput. I watched a few & my fav was on Unherd last month with Freddy. It's on YT. If anyone's too busy for the book, I'd recommend that interview instead.
The only reason to merge is to minimize management overhead and reduction of duplication. They ALL have largely missed the EV boat and must regroup. If they will start making good EVs, they might have a chance.

they cover the niche of ugly cars now. the point is, it does not make sense anymore to produce that many different combustion engine variants. within three companies they can throw out some of the combustion engines and increase the volume of the engines that are left. that results in huge cost savings. this can be done with other parts as well.

Sometimes that's the only thing that needs to be done. Kodak failed hard when they hesitate to pursue digital cameras. Yet, they are still here now, just not making cameras anymore. Fujifilm which has "film" in it's name is pretty much DoA when cameras turn digital, yet here they are, still producing digital cameras thanks to their highly popular instant FIlM camera. Sometimes a company just need to survive and not crumbles. Then they might be able to rebuild again.
The complaints about the Nissan CVT are amazing to me. I've put 200,750 miles on a V6 Altima, 55,000 on a Murano, my sister has put 250,000+ on two Altimas, all with zero transmission maintenance, and zero problems. Transmission fluid isn't engine oil, and synthetic transmission fluid can have 500,000 mile recommended intervals. The stupidest thing Nissan has done with that cvt is to make it pretend to be a geared transmission, torque loads are highest during shifts, and it makes the vehicle slower and less efficient. And you can't turn it off.
Recommended atf change is 60,000 not 500,000 miles. Given Nissans known CVT issues, a better recommendation is 30,000 miles for both atf and filter. For heavier load usage even go to 15,000 miles. Also, some models and years knowledgeable techs recommend installing an additional atf cooler. Good luck. I hope they last a long time.
You seem to be a very lucky person. Good for you. I don't know any person who owned a CVT Nissan without having expensive and annoying transmission issues. I can understand Nissan's decision to implement those "artificial gears". Driving a CVT car is an absolute nightmare for me. I cannot get rid of the feeling that the clutches in the gearbox are slipping. It is, of course, very stupid that you aren't able to disable those "gears".
I bought a used 2015 Altima with over 220000 miles that was fleet maintained and it seems to be doing fine. I 'm not a lead foot which I assume contributes to stressing the transmission. My biggest complaint is the OEM headlight defect that I can't get fixed and didn't know about because it was settled while I'm didn't own the car by a private class action suit that didn't involve the DoT or NHTSA so there is no official recall. This affects every Altima model sold 2013-2017 and can be a serious safety issue
I have a 2013 nissan cvt pulsar from new. 150000 kms. People love to chat shit. Not an extra dollar spent. More than I can say for most European and American cars.

Not possible. The government will prop them/it up and not allow that, just as the U.S. propped up GM multiple times. They would consider it a matter of national security.
Yup just like how Japanese Govt is proping up US Govt spending now. Once Japan start selling US treasury bills they r holding in massive block daily like China Govt then US Govt will have not enough funds to repay back Japanese Bondholders if the Japanese car merger is going down.
Thanks for an informative video. I’m sure your take on the ‘merger’ is entirely accurate. I also think we will continue to see consolidation in the Western and Japanese automotive industry. However- there is another factor not far down the line to consider: the likely, and fairly imminent implosion of the Chinese economy due to their real estate crisis, and other factors, such as de-globalisation. The Western automotive brands survived before the Chinese economic miracle, and, some will survive in scaled down form I’m sure. US protectionist policies will also hamper Chinese exports…
The only reason every American car brand isn't bankrupt is because the US government has bailed them out and enacted policies that protect them from outside competition.
@@blueeyes6192USA did that for Ford and GM. How did you think they survived bankruptcy? For now, both Ford and GM are pretty safe because most Americans want trucks which the Japanese and Chinese couldn't compete with. But if they need to do it again, I'm pretty sure they will.

Yes but to be fair, Kmart was owned by a predatory private equity guy, not a retail expert. He just milked both companies for their value then buried them.
Also reminds me of another Japanese companies: Konica and Minolta. They merged into Konica Minolta only to fail again. But then they got bought by SONY and here they are, one of the most popular digital cameras along with legacy brands like Canon and Fujifilm.
if all these companies and factories are shutting down, all/most in china, what does this mean for the Chinese economy? how many worker are involved and what happens to the factories, are they being taken over/sold/repurposed or?
chinese economy is not doing well currently. their real estate pyramid scam is currently breaking down, they produce far too much cars and solar panels and batteries for the chinese people and lower the prices to sell them over the world. some car companies already went bankrupt in china because of over production.
One impact of this combination may be to cut cost by reducing the number of suppliers to keep them operating at higher capacity and to reduce the total headcount in the supplier base for the 3 companies combined....
Japanese loyalty to brands is crazy tho'. I think Honda higher ups won't touch Nissan and would simply sit on it. Maybe keep the commercial trucks line because that's what Nissan has that Honda doesn't. SONY saved legendary Japanese brand Akai from bankruptcy but did absolutely nothing for it. Release no meaningful Akai products whatsoever. They just proud they "saved" Akai. Nissan is THE car brand for the Japanese. If Honda didn't save them, I'm pretty sure Toyota eventually will. It's just a Japanese thing.
No wonder why most Nissan model cars are not doing well these days.. maybe it has something to do with their engineering system.. Honda and Toyota have been tough with their Auto Engineering Technology system, while other Japanese automakers such as Mazda, Isuzu, Suzuki, and now Nissan were struggling to stay in the market competition.. they're just lucky that Honda helped them out.. 👍
EV's market impacts are essentially only temporary political and Chinese price war based. Both while massive issues will settle down. Chinese Ev's have massive issues in both products and companies, yet to surface to the general public but already known and visible to many. Politics and policies of nations around Ev's are volatile and also have massive issues. Just like Chinese Ev's issues this is yet to fully surface to the general public but already known and visible to many. Once these come out, the price war settles, the political landscape settles the storm hitting the car market will settle. Honda being considered the most capable/toughest company is tasked to help save its brothers during this time of need.
Nissan is done. Honda and Toyota will have to find ways to survive next crucial year. Only countries with poor infrastructure will be stuck with old and populatant products.
I was wondering if European carmakers can only survive now if they merged with Chinese EV companies. Just imagine VW or Mercedes merging with BYD. Then BYD could help them develop an affordable EV, and BYD would get access to a quality brand name with a huge market. It would be a win-win for both companies, no? If they don't merge, China will probably buy them anyway in a few years from now. And nobody in Europe is going to like that. So I say merge now, and work with China instead of fighting them.
Yes, I think the most likely scenario over the next couple of years will be EU, US, & Japan carmakers rebranding Chinese "sleds" or complete cars. CATL's sled is the guts of an EV, that you can just slap your own chassis on top of. It's an admission that we can't make good EVs on our own, but it's business realism.
They don't need to merge, they just get bought out when they are finally on their knees. How many car brands have already been bought out by the chinese? I know MG for a start
Toyota is always late to the party. For years they claim to achieve such battery. Years after years, they lie just to entertains and keep their loyal customerfromo switching brand. Toyota EV and rav4 hybrid are a nightmare to own.
Hi Sam, what’s your thought on why Nissan Leaf lost its way from a relative pioneer in new energy vehicle market. Maybe doing a segment on The Leaf would be enlightening…
They didnt want to make changes to existing product. Got surpassed by competition that made upgrades. When I was looking for an EV i shopped for Bolt and nissan leaf . (pre tax credit 7500) I found the Bolt ok. but I loved the leaf. It felt more high quality and I would have bought it. But I had to wait a year or two. forward to 2022/3 I test drove new Bolt EUV. No longer feels like crap. nice leather. Nice BIG nav screen. ton of room. 250 miles. No brainer I bought that over a 210 mile leaf that cost more. less miles.
@@BarryObaminable We have a 150 mile Leaf, 2022, bought used and paid a total of $13K. It's not the best EV on the road these days, but we absolutely love it. So quiet and fast, beautiful styling, lots of smart features. My next EV will be 400 miles or more (hopefully) but for now, this is the most fun I've had in a car since my little Civic hatchback stickshift. The Ariya was supposed to replace the Leaf, but no one's buying it; too expensive, under-featured. But people who own it do say they love the car, so I don't know what's going on. All I know is, when we were at the Nissan dealer shopping for a Leaf, I said to a sales guy "So, that's the new Ariya?" and he just nodded and grunted. They seemed almost embarrassed. I guess it's not selling.
They purposely make the Leaf look ugly and uninteresting to protect their ICE lines. The same with Toyota making their Prius awakward looking, also the bZ4x (not only ugly, but the name is also stupid.) Big mistake. When they realised their mistake, they tried to make the Prius sexy. Too little to late.
Don't care for Nissan that much, but seeing Honda in this situation breaks my heart, I grew up driving Civic in my late teens early twenties, tinkering and ricing my Civics used to be a hobby. But Honda has been in doldrums for decades and have not been able to get out of the rut when they still had a brand name recognition and market share around the world. Now, I think it's a bit late. As efficient as Japanese car makers could ever be, it would be difficult to compete with China on price points, scale and volumes.
Japanese people don't embrace Android. They loved their iPhones, and no one can make iPhones except Apple. Big mistake, but out of the control of the Japanese smartphone manufacturers.
Ive had Japanese motorcycles and a Japanese car and a truck, and all of them have been great. I feel sorry for Japan and hope they can pull it off somehow though it isnt looking too good.
Here we go again, many years ago a French company did just that, rescue Nissan from going bust, now a local Japanese company trying to do the same. It’s no mystery why three car companies would merge when BYD, MG and Tesla are dominating the car market. In WA alone the increase in EVs has been 530%. It’s like the three Protestant churches merging to make the most of market share
@@davidsentanu7836 Yes exactly, better to provide some perspective & reference to that figure. Would love to hear your take on the possibility of Tesla and BYD surviving the big shift, with Tesla ultimately dominating because of advantages in AI, communications, S/W, and determination from the wealthiest man on the planet.
You would need to understand how China works to answer this. Any industry that the central govt decides as being strategic for their long term goals will get unlimited financial support. They will happily run at a loss for a long time to kill off any competition. If this is what happens then Tesla may need similar support from the US govt to stay in that battle of attrition. @@victoriaguthrie8772 A little different. Japan produces better engines than the Brits at the time. So when they won they thought it was because of their superior craftmanship (which is true.)

The only reason to merge is to minimize management overhead and reduction of duplication. They ALL have largely missed the EV boat and must regroup.
If they will start making good EVs, they might have a chance.
As usual, management duplicates will not be the first to be axed. Plants and blue collars will be .
They will never be competitive as labor and overhead is too expensive and China controls the battery supply chain.

We have a Nissan Leaf, bought slightly used, that is simply fantastic.

Thanks for an informative video. I’m sure your take on the ‘merger’ is entirely accurate. I also think we will continue to see consolidation in the Western and Japanese automotive industry.

That supposed super electric highway from Perth to Esperance is a PR scam - the one & only charger at Esperance cranks up a diesel generator to provide the charging station with power bcos the network is so weak down there. Its not even charging from coal or natural gas, but diesel. WA is wait awhile for good reason.
@So?
@@lindasmith320 So? What so? You were giving a snippet of information, and I did too. People can make their own mind by the given information.
So what's in this deal for Honda?
Is BYD making a profit?
Would love to hear your take on the possibility of Tesla and BYD surviving the big shift, with Tesla ultimately dominating because of advantages in AI, communications, S/W, and determination from the wealthiest man on the planet.
You would need to understand how China works to answer this. Any industry that the central govt decides as being strategic for their long term goals will get unlimited financial support. They will happily run at a loss for a long time to kill off any competition. If this is what happens then Tesla may need similar support from the US govt to stay in that battle of attrition. How do you become a wealthy man on this planet? Start off as the wealthiest man and go into battle with China and see who caves in first.
A TITANIC WITH A 'CHRISCRAFT' NAMEPLATE.
By chance, the latest Honda engines are no longer turning counter clock wise 😅 they may be able to copy Stellantis winning strategy by standardizing their powertrains and platforms... 😂 all brands cars will be the same except their "top hats" .
A Bitcoin Treasury bill was up for a vote in Japan and I was like, "oh, okay...they have a chance to prevent a complete economic implosion!" - but no, it got voted down. They're in trouble.
Japan and Germany, two countries in competition in the race to the bottom.
Question is which stock will rise from the merge?
They elect Carlos Ghosn to run the company, I would die laughing.
He'd be wise to run the company from Lebanon.
He ruined Nissan.
@ hey, he’d be just doing “remote” work 😂
That would be about the only way they can enforce their arrest warrant 🤣
E-Viking is correct as to Japan’s economic strait. However, he ignores one important fact: Japan is vassal State of USA or a colony of USA, either definition means USA will bail out Japan.
Notice that Japan owns $1.4 trillion US Treasury Bonds.
The link to the source goes to an article about the slave workers at the BYD factory site.
I remember Ghosn has said that eventually bankruptcy awaits Nissan either way, and he knew the scenes from up close and personal,
He might rethink whether he should have said that openly in the box to Lebanon.
