    I'm a complete beginner, and it took me 3 hours, but with these instructions I was able to remove, inspect, fix wiring, and reinstall my dishwasher! Even with a slightly different setup on the bottom, all the directions were clear and super easy to follow. Thank you for this video!

      My dishwasher has a plug 🔌 into the wall, now I'm confused about the wiring

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY
      @ColtonCrumpDIY  Місяць тому

      So this can happen and instead of hardwiring it like I showed in the video, you just find a dishwasher with a plug and plug it in. :)

      That's right! Though, he could've cleaned the floor off camera? Installing a new DW without cleaning the floor = yuck.

      you're not wrong. hindsight 100% should have cleaned off camera. Because what happened was after everything was said and done, it was cleaned afterwards and the video was already up and published. haha ill remember this next time for an appliance install video.

    Saved $200 because of this, THANK YOU. Home Depot automatically billed us $200 to install, but we cancelled as well as sent back/refunded their automatically ordered installation kits for $45. How they get away w that is so sad....RE: installation, those wires are insanely STIFF, that was the hardest part :P

    1 small tip before you reconnect the old water line. Flush it. Just turn the valve on slightly for a few seconds and put something under to catch the water. This just makes sure nothing nasty gets in the new washer line. If you’re using a new line no need! But great video!

      It is encouraging to see that people have made this happen. My hubby ordered it fast enough but now it's just sitting there. So I need to take a breath and get this done. I'm not particularly mechanically minded but I can follow directions and copy. Here's hoping I can find the tools I need in the hoarder shed. 🎉

    Great video, but always make sure you just turn your hot water valve off to the whole house , cause in most houses and all older houses the shut off valve isn’t just under the sink, in my case I just about flooded the kitchen and sent a significant amount of water to the basement. Cleaning it up as we speak. Just be safe and turn it all off.

    Colton, you forgot the absolute most important step! Always always always test before touch! Verify that the power is off with a voltmeter or test light before de-terminating the power leads!

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY
      @ColtonCrumpDIY  3 роки тому +49

      You are right. I did forget to mention to test with a multimeter, or something similar or as simple as a test light. Test it out and make sure the voltage has stopped from the wires. I usually do pretty well at mentioning this but I forgot to add it in this one. Thanks for the comment!

      My dishwasher plugged into the wall. Should I check the breaker too? I bought a dishwasher and had them install it.

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY
      @ColtonCrumpDIY  3 роки тому +11

      If you have a dishwasher that was installed with a cord that plugs into an outlet and had a licensed professional install it, likely the outlet is protected and you should be fine to replace your dishwasher by unplugging it then ensuring your new dishwasher has a plug that also plugs into the same outlet

    • @davidblaska4738

      An easier way: Very first thing to do is switch off circuit breaker. Then turn on dishwasher. If it doesn't light up, you have cut off the power.

    Few things to add:
    Unplug the dishwasher if you can or check for power
    Check for leaks before you slide it back in
    Screw the feet down on the existing dishwasher before sliding it out - gives you a lot more room to work with.
    If you're replacing cords you can disconnect them and not be worried about damaging them while pulling out.

      @@ColtonCrumpDIY sure thing, thanks for the video. Reminded me of some of things I had forgotten since the last time I did one. I usually do a full cord replace so I unhook from the disposal, water valve, and outlet side, but I might not this time.
      You made it look easy though :D, last time I did one took me 2 hours to get it in because I forgot about those feet screwing up and down.

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY

      Also, mention that 1) some building codes require an air gap between the DW and drain, and 2) some professional installers won't hard-wire the DW in, they must have a GFI plug available.

    Thank You. For someone with a moderate amount of DIY knowledge, but never having replaced a dishwasher before, your video was perfect. No overly wordy explanations or repeating the same asinine warnings about making sure you remember to trip the breaker or turn off the water supply or you could end up with a mess. Sigh… those videos drive me crazy. To the point, well spoken, clear video, no multiple reminders about common sense things like “ don’t forget to make sure you triple check that your screws are snugged up tight to prevent any problems in the future. “. And no novel length speeches like the one that I’m giving in this comment. Liked, subbed, and notifications on, just because I think if you post something, I might learn something and I didn’t have to devote an hour to something you could concisely explain to me in five minutes. So thank You! I’m a fan!

    Great video! Thank you! I hope this helps someone. I was thinking the hardest part of this for me would be laying the dishwasher on its back and then picking it back up again. But I figured out that I can put two chairs facing each other and lay the dishwasher back on those. I hope the weight distribution will allow for that. Doing it that way will also keep me from having to get down on the floor and pick myself back up. I'm 65 and have arthritis, so I don't like having to do that.

      Not every dishwasher is the same, but the concept is pretty universal. Bottom of dishwashers are no joke as the manufacturer keeps a lot of the metal down there pretty raw and feel no need to sand any corners or edges. Glad you got it figured out!!! I bet it looks great!

    Great video! Is this method safe for apartment buildings as well?

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY
      @ColtonCrumpDIY  8 місяців тому

      Hey Jay! So I personally wouldn't mess with anything in apartment buildings because those are often owned by someone or a company. The maintenance team/ person should be the one to fix it and I would highly recommend working through the landlord before any type of home improvement project like this is started. Now if you own an apartment within a building, I would triple check that you are allowed to make these changes without any backlash.
      If all of that has been done, then often times yes, these same steps would apply, it would be just a question of your breaker box location to ensure you don't get electrocuted and you have access to shut your water valves

  • @Constitution1789

    Seems easy. What if you don't want to install a new washer right now? What can you use to close or seal the water hose until you're ready for a new washer?

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY
      @ColtonCrumpDIY  Рік тому +1

      Definitely not a difficult job to do. If you already have a dish washer there and don't want to install a new one, I'd just leave the old dishwasher. Use that as your seal. If the space is empty, just make sure the water valve is turned to the off position for the dishwasher and then for the disposal hook up, there are plugs you can get to close that off. It's just 3/4" so get a rubber 3/4" plug. Something like this amzn.to/3hWaSBa

      @Constitution1789 Рік тому +1

      @@ColtonCrumpDIY The old dish washer stopped working ten years ago. When I turn the dial to start a cycle, it just buzzes. No water enters the unit. I wanted to remove it so I could use the extra space, but if you recommend using it as my seal, I'll leave it alone until I'm ready to purchase a new washer. I appreciate your expertise.

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY
      @ColtonCrumpDIY  Рік тому +1

      Gotcha. I have the mindset of if something isn't broken don't go try fixing it. If you're getting by with the old one there, I'd leave it. If you for sure want to use that space and remove it, then disconnect the wiring (make sure to flip the breaker before and test) then I'd make sure the water supply is turned off (and it is its own line and that off position doesn't impact any other water lines like your sink faucet), then detach the drain hose at the garbage disposal under your sink then purchase a rubber plug and close up that punch out on your disposal. 85% of the time water won't come out of this, but when you're using your disposal or water builds up, then it can be an issue so plugging that and ensuring that plug stays is key. Best of luck! Let me know if you have more questions

    OTHER INSTALL NOTES: This is also a great time to flush your drain hose before installation, you'd be surprise how much gunk has accumulated over time.
    DIRECTIONS: Remove the hose entirely from the system and take it to another sink and run the water through the hose until the water passes through freely. (It’s BEST to execute this process outdoors with a garden hose if you do not have a laundry/utility sink to use.) Afterwards re-install it, on the sink side first.

    Oh, oh, there's no moisture barrier (foil duct tape) to shied that particle-board slat under countertop that will get hit by steam when the door's opened. I can't tell if your countertop is granite (I'm presuming) or laminate. I suppose it doesn't matter too much for stone, but you sure don't want steam moisture seeping into the laminate edges, if it actually is laminate.
    A couple of suggestions would be a braided (anti-burst) water inlet hose instead and a plastic dishwasher floor pan in case of any leaks or future leaks. Maybe it's just being paranoid, but a friend experienced a blow out in a tap line... while he wasn't home. A homeowner or renters' worse nightmare.

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY
      @ColtonCrumpDIY  Рік тому

      Fair points. I don't open my dishwasher to allow a bunch of steam to escape. I let the full cycle run and get to it when it's been done for a minute and when I open it, everything has cooled off. If you are the type of person that opens and gets steam coming out, I do agree that moisture build up over time with laminate will make it curl and peel off.

The water line was a corroded copper tube going to L joint on DW. I couldn't tell which to losen because of all the corrosion. So I undid from under sink instead. But then knob was not all the way off and I got water under sink. then after I hooked up DW to water under sink the knob joint started leaking so I had to tighten that , i may have to replace that. Then my drain hose clamp i had on old one was too big so now i have to go to store to get another clamp.

    Hey man, just a heads up it looks like you just flipped a 20amp breaker then exposed 14/2 wire in the electrical box of your dishwasher. 14/2 (white jacketed wire) is rated for 15a only, for 20a you’d have 12/2 wire (yellow jacket). I’d highly recommend you confirm this, and change that breaker out for a tandem 15 instead of tandem 20, and check the other circuits in your house for similar electrical violations. In the event of an overcurrent situation (15-20a) your breaker will not trip and the wire could overheat and burn your house down, nobody wants that. Cheers!

    It seems like when removing the old dishwasher, the very first steps should be to turn off the electricity and water supply to the old dishwasher, before removing the bottom access panel. Also, regarding disconnecting the wiring and water supply line through the access panel, that may not even be necessary, if you have a long enough electrical lead and water supply line; it may be possible to just remove the two top screws holding the machine to the counter top, and then just sliding it out from under the counter, where it will be easer to disconnect the electrical and water supply line.

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY
      @ColtonCrumpDIY  Рік тому +1

      Good points. Few things to point out. I keep the removing the access panel as the first step because depending on how the manufacturer has the electrical wired (hard wired like in the video or just a plug) you can see if you need to just unplug from an outlet or you need to unwire the hard wiring. As far as the length of wire and water line, yes you are right if there is enough line to do so, but all the dishwashers I have replaced, there is almost never enough line to do so. I chose to reduce the risk of putting stress on those lines when taking it out. Great comment.

  • @Wisconsin4eyes
    @Wisconsin4eyes 3 місяці тому

    In the panel the breaker was a 20amp but the wiring was white (15 amp romex) was that accurate or am I seeing things? I think you should have yellow romex that’s rated for 20 amp circuit.
    I only say something because I am currently about to install my dishwasher and am finding conflicting information for dw circuit requirements.

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY
      @ColtonCrumpDIY  3 місяці тому +1

      So I'm not a certified electrician. From what I have seen and read (looking over NEC being a source), is the answer is it depends lol. How much power will your dishwasher draw to run, are you planning to put more on the circuit like a disposal or other outlets (maybe GFCI), or do you want to have t the dishwasher have is item dedicated circuit? This setup demonstrated had a the 15 rated Romex (white) protected by a GFCI on the same line running it to a 20 breaker. Which is fine to have the wiring rated less than the breaker but not fine to have the breaker less than the line. Hope this helps explain what you saw. I also didn't wire this house when it was built. Just demonstrating an ol swap-a-roo.

    this will be my first dishwasher in this old house. It will be just about 5ft from the sink. Do i need to buy an extension drain hose to connect to the drain pipe from the sink

    • @ColtonCrumpDIY
      @ColtonCrumpDIY  3 роки тому +1

      Sorry David just getting back to you. It depends on how long the drain hose is that comes with your dishwasher you purchase. You don't want the hose to have a lot of tension from it to the sink drain area, you also don't want a ton of excess either. If the distance is 5ft with a straight line from your dishwasher location to your drain, I would first seek a longer hose without an extension. Around 6ft to 7ft long. That way it gives you a bit of slack for installing and putting it back. I personally wouldn't do extensions as my first choice because it then creates a higher probability of leaks at more connection points. This is all personal opinion and for demonstration purposes.
