  • Since the St. Olaf Orchestra was unable to perform our mid-March concert, we lost the opportunity to offer a public musical tribute to Doug Schuurman, a beloved Religion professor who passed away suddenly this past February (unrelated to the current COVID-19 pandemic). With this post of the St. Olaf Orchestra's performance of "Nimrod" from Elgar's Enigma Variations, a work that Doug cherished and listened to the very day he died, we honor Doug’s memory, his long and faithful service to the college, and the legacy he leaves behind. I wholeheartedly agree with Professor of Philosophy Gordon Marino's words about Doug: “A kinder and gentler soul of sparkling intelligence and a lovely sense of humor, you will never meet.” We dedicate this performance of Elgar’s Nimrod, which paints a beautiful musical portrait of love in its purest form, to the life of Professor Doug Schuurman."

Someone tell me how these college kids can always sound like the New York Philharmonic.
