- Since the St. Olaf Orchestra was unable to perform our mid-March concert, we lost the opportunity to offer a public musical tribute to Doug Schuurman, a beloved Religion professor who passed away suddenly this past February (unrelated to the current COVID-19 pandemic). With this post of the St. Olaf Orchestra's performance of "Nimrod" from Elgar's Enigma Variations, a work that Doug cherished and listened to the very day he died, we honor Doug’s memory, his long and faithful service to the college, and the legacy he leaves behind. I wholeheartedly agree with Professor of Philosophy Gordon Marino's words about Doug: “A kinder and gentler soul of sparkling intelligence and a lovely sense of humor, you will never meet.” We dedicate this performance of Elgar’s Nimrod, which paints a beautiful musical portrait of love in its purest form, to the life of Professor Doug Schuurman."
