    Nice tip, and something I've always done. Also leaning forward as far as possible to get a better view.
    If someone lives in a house where their driveway has really poor sight-lines onto the road, they ought to fit a convex mirror on the other side of the road to get a better view. I know it's not always practical to do so, but so many (usually rural) properties have entrances that are difficult to see out of.

      @@JamesSimpkinsADI I don't know how it is/was in UK, but having my own experience in getting driving lessons abroad I can see your point being valid. I remember when they showed me how to parallel park based on specific number of steering wheel rotations and aiming on another car using rear mirror and a corner of headrest on the back seat. Unfortunately I see this everywhere. It's not common anymore to actually teach people so they can apply that knowledge in different scenarios. Nowadays they rather just tell you what to do. I had few courses at work recently and they all were like this: "do this, do that, don't ask why".

    I learnt to do that coming out onto a road with a blind corner where cars join that road at speed. You can only see the traffic from the right if your on the pavement. It helps when quiet but when there is even moderate traffic it is not effective. There used to be a mirror on the other side to help people but the highways said it was on their land so took it away. The reason being the mirror maybe could be used as a reason for an accident among a long list of other reasons. The fact it reduced risk was ignored. The only foolproof method on this one is the passenger gets out walks across the road and when clear waves you out and gets back in!

  •  6 днів тому +1

    Notice also that the driver pulling out didn't stop at the edge of their driveway and actually incurred onto the crossing driveway.
    Lots of people don't know how to stop right before a line, be it traffic light stopping line, STOP sign stopping line, give-way line, or just plain edge of driveway before an intersection.
    The secret is simple - align the stopping line to the bottom of your side mirror, as if your mirror sits on it. Most passenger cars are designed in a way that this always works. In some cars, especially if your bonnet is quite short like on VW Polo or a Mini or Fiat 500, you can drive even further than that, but that's something you have to test. The easiest way to test your stopping line is to park up on an empty parking spot and draw up lines with chalk or a laser spirit level if you have one, then getting into your car and just look from your driver's perspective, memorizing where those lines are. Then, just practice approaching that line and braking such that your car is as close to that line as possible. Ideally, your number plate should touch it.

    • @ZeerakImran
      @ZeerakImran 6 днів тому +2

      I think this driver knows how to do that. He/she just wants to be able to see oncoming cars otherwise they won’t know if they can pull out or not. Hence the talk about windows and using noise. Only problem is if its a little noisy (maybe from the car that went past earlier) a hybrid or electric car comes about. You’ll only be able to hear the tyre/road noise. The rain helps with the sound often actually. But it could be a cyclist where there is no sound of them coming and road bikes are often bad at braking (super thin tyres), aerodynamic and often no disk brakes. Edit, hedges and bends. Very often, you can’t see anything you just have to go by noise and hope for the best

      It’s something I need to start doing more, I’ve now started doing that in the mornings reversing off my drive plus turn music off at those kind of junctions so you can hear better. I had a classic example of this the other day, main road 30mph area and a driver just reversed off her drive so I had to stop quickly as did a bus opposite, she made it so much worse by pushing out as I’d not got much room with the bus there and had to reverse to let her get out (one of those moments as a new driver I tend to class as a near miss that I need to review in my head once home as often something I could have done better) I’ve had one guy hit my car as he didn’t look right pulling out of a junction, found no fault to me , thanks to my dash cams but just glad it was at 10mph so just cosmetic and a bad back for a week, and of course insurance increase of £200.

    • @ZeerakImran
      @ZeerakImran 6 днів тому +2

      Specially the most vulnerable, road bikes. Often there is noise from other cars that then means that you can no longer use your hearing to judge cars on your road. Should definitely get rid of the hedge or the only thing we can do is inch forward slowly. Brake. Forward Slowly. Brake. and so on so that others see you and are aware of you before you are aware of them. The uk is also ridiculous with speed limits of 30 where they should be (and were not so long ago) 60. And 60 where they should be 20. I know the whole its a limit not a target. But by that logic, speed limits shouldn’t exist since you should be driving at the appropriate speed anyway. See. Yes speed limits are targets, they let you know what you can be expected to safely do on that road. What i hate most is a high speed limit and then a speed bump out of no where. Or mini roundabouts or junctions with no warnings and worn out road markings, in areas with a high speed limit. If speed limits aren’t a target but a limit, then what you want people doing 20mph when the speed limit is 30? Because everyone goes 30 or more at 30 limit. For a reason. Because it’s clearly safe. Other times, we go 15 on a 60. Because that road its literally impossible to do a 40 safely let alone a 60. They will blame the accident on the driver anyway, whether they’re under the speed limit or not. So ultimately, you get screwed either way with the “you should have driven according to what was safe “while simultaneously enforcing speed limits on you because “you can’t be trusted with driving at the right speed”
